Khao Yai and Kanchanaburi in Thailand is a good and beautiful tourist destination. It's a fresh air space. But it is not well known to foreign tourists. Try to visit here.

Hi, I'm Thai; currently reside in LA as well. My recommendation is late Nov - early Feb. In order to visit Thailand, one should visit 3 major areas of Thailand -- North (I recommend Chiang Mai), South (Phuket, Koh Samui, Krabi), and lastly, Bangkok itself is a must (just like NY but more exotic). If u decide to go and need more detail, please feel free to drop further questions.
