Wow! What a thing to pop into my ‘suggested videos’. I grew up next to Binbrook, and always wanted to fly the Lightning. I never made the cut, but was lucky enough in my UAS days to get a couple of trips in the T5 with 5 sqdn. (Only supposed to be one trip, but we had to divert, so got a second)! 😁 Many years later, now flying commercially, we moved to a remote village in Northumberland, and our next door neighbour only turns out to be an ex Lightning flight commander, and then test pilot for BAe. So imagine my delight to see Peter ‘delivering’ this Lightning back to Binbrook all those years ago.

Fond memories of my many months at Binbrook 1965-1968 as a USAF Exchange Officer. AFDS and 5 Sqdn. Really great pilots to work and fly with and an outstanding group of aircraft maintainers. It goes down as the outstanding assignment of my military career. Beautifully done photography. Many thanks

The trouble with enthusiasts is they have no idea of what it takes to keep an aircraft like the Lightning especially the eye watering sums of money required. People with the right technical skills are difficult to find, and the Campaign Against Aviation will definitely not be helpful. They are highly paid Civil Serpents who like a quiet life. I'm glad I grew up in the days when I saw the Lightning and many others flying every day! ( I am a retired aircraft engine fitter )

charity would have to fund it. if the demand is there then money will flow, i think the problem is alot of people take things for granted these days and dont see the cost. not everyone values seeing historic aircraft in flight, especially in the new carbon conscious world, but yes it would be great to see these historic aircraft in flight!

Awesome to see that. I was there last year and had a look at the two Lightnings there, unfortunately the Tbird is disassembled though. Crazy to think I flew from that same runway in my teens, though in the humble but still awesome DH Chipmunk T10 and not a Lightning.

If the UK can fund and run National Parks and other "Living" museums then there should be a National Air Park to act as a " Living" museum to the UKs past pinnacles of aeronautic achievement. Aircraft such as the Lightning would have pride of place. Somebody needs to act quickly before all the suitable old 'dromes get built-upon by developers. There's enough multi-billionaires around the globe looking for somewhere to invest their spare cash.

Binbrook was my first posting in '77. A favourite trick played on new jocks first Solo was to replace the parachute pack when the pilot was taxiing whilst out of site from the pilot. When he made it back to the apron it was pointed out that the parachute hadn't been deployed on landing, therfore he shouldn't have been able to pull up in time. Their faces were turn a ghostly white!!😅😅😅😂😅

Binbrook MQ's now form part of an estate called Brookenby Estate having been sold for private ownership. Technical site is pretty much intact but neglected having been utilised as commercial units as part of a business site. Underwhelming and sad end to a great station. Add it to the list, there are many.
