A Walkie-Talkie for Kids That Works!

Just some love for the Retevis RT22 (RT622 in UK and EU) walkie-talkie which has found a new lease of life in our house recently.
RT622 on Amazon UK - amzn.to/3gxBcep
RT22 on Amazon US - amzn.to/3f1yFJf
The Retevis RT22 is a lightweight, compact and fairly robust walkie-talkie. It's these features that have made it my walkie-talkie of choice since my son learned to ride his bike.
Remember that the RT622 is the PMR446 version which is license free in the UK and EU.
It's a perfect choice for kids because it's really simple to use, easy to clip on and doesn't get in the way. It's also tough enough to take a fall or two. One of our two is already pretty scratched up but other than that it works perfectly.

Thank you for your helpful reviews! I just purchased a set of RT47's (RT647) for use at a kids' summer camp that I volunteer with. The RT27 looks really nice and is cheaper, but at camp things get left in the rain or dropped in the river so the extra ruggedness seemed like a good idea! Can't wait to see how these fare. Your reviews on Retevis radios were key to my decision to give these a try. Now I just need to find the programming cable...

Thanks for the review. I ended up buying some of these (well, the Baofeng-branded version) for a some family members and they really like them. The small size and the simplicity are great!

Did you consider Motorola T42? Retevis looks fairly bigger in comparison. I got T42 for my kid for the exactly same reason (to have communication when she’s on the bike) and it works great for us.

Yep. These look like a great solution too, particularly as they have a brighter design which my boy would love. I don't have any though so don't know how they perform. The only downside for me is the AAA batteries rather than a simple USB rechargeable Li-Ion battery as with the Retevis. I might pick some up to review.

I think the best solution for kids is the Motorola Talkabout T42. I have seen them on your channel. They are smaller and lightet. And you can pass a shoulder belt through them besides the clip option. I have bougjt for 2 wreks the Motorola T42 for my 5 year old fresh biker and I am very happy.

There are better radios for your kids that are already set up properly! Don't buy these if you don't know what you're doing and willing to do extra work!!!!! These are designed for business use and marketed illegally in the US for "licence free" use. After you waste your time these aren't even any better then the truly legal licence free radios. If you program them properly no one is going to knock down your door and no one will care but why waste your time? Do your research if you still want to buy these or better yet buy a real FRS radio. Please don't hand them off to your kids straight out of the box without reprogramming them first. It's very frustrating to people using legal radios on channel they PAY to use.

The RT22 is an FRS radio. Is this not suitable in the US for family use? In the UK and EU the model is the RT622 which is exactly the same radio but programmed to PMR446.

@@tdcattech This radio is FCC part 90(business radio). If you don't live in the US see your local rules. Unfortunately many of the sellers misrepresent their products in the advertising. If the radio is programmed properly for FRS with the correct frequencies and power settings it's EXTREMELY unlikely you would get in trouble. Problem is they market these to businesses, hams, and for FRS. There's no telling what frequencies might be in the radio when you receive it. This radio legally speaking can not be used on FRS even if programmed correctly although I will once again say someone would be unlikely to get in trouble if they made sure the power settings and frequencies complied with FRS standards. All that said just get a real FRS radio and save yourself the headache.

Well I'm certainly not going to claim to know about US FCC regulations. All I can say is that the RT22 comes programmed to FRS frequencies with a 2W output power which is correct for the 462MHz range as far as I know. How does a business radio under this category differ? The RT622 will come programmed as per PMR446 requirements which will need the radio to be set to low power (0.5W) and obviously the 446MHz channels. I covered this in my first review of the product. One thing I wouldn't recommend is using an FRS radio in the UK as the 462 frequencies clash with EMS frequencies. Not ideal :-D You're right, there are more kid friendly radios out there but these are working beautifully for us at the moment.

@@tdcattech The difference is FCC type acceptance. This radio didn't go through that process. If they tried to apply for type certification for FRS the radio would likely be denied. Although new regulations allow FRS radios to use 2 watts on certain frequencies there are still frequencies they can only use 0.5 watts on. Next there is the issue that the radio can be programmed by the user to operate outside the FRS band. Finally FRS is allowed a bandwidth of only 12.5mhz. This radio is capable of 25mhz. It could likely be programmed to follow FRS specifications but I doubt it's shipped with proper programming and even if it was it's still not legal without going through certification. I don't believe there is any way to stop the user from exceeding the 0.5watt limit on the channels that require that even if everything else was programmed correctly. Which brings me back to my earlier point. Program it correctly and you probably won't get in trouble but why not just buy a radio that is actually legal and worry free direct from the factory.
