I love how Mr Darcy looks at Lizzy very intently each time he says something to her. He is watching for the smallest sign that she notices that he is trying to be a good boy. He tests this by asking her the question if she was interested in meeting Georgina. Lizzy I think was impressed already both with Pemberley and the Master showing his politeness and eagerness to please.

I know that this scene is supposed to be about Lizzie seeing Mr. Darcy in a new light, but the very end has always struck me as truly highlighting his loneliness. He was a young, wealthy, handsome man with a huge estate and grounds, yet had nobody to share it with. This is the moment that he became more "human" to me.

  • @marysmith8128

Prior to that the lead in in the water scene emphasized his loneliness and struggle with his fortunate position. He would have not spent much time with others of any other Classes or groups due to his responsibilities with the estate and everything. His inability to communicate (or procure a wife that was not in it for his money)was therefore more a result of his "circumstances" rather than his being proud or anything. I love this movie and the book flushes out so much. Hands down best adaption and best leading man.

Getting married is very different to hanging around people. He can hang with whoever he wants and marry whoever he wants. But he is introverted and shy and so it's hard for him to connect with just anyone. But this scene and the one before it shows Darcy that not all her relatives are social climbers out to use people for their personal gain.

+panzerken That makes two of us, but i am slightly younger at 53. When period drama is as well produced as this one, then i feel it encompasses all boundaries, and all social classes. You do not need to be an intellectual, or lover of the classics,to appreciate this magnificent production. The BBC thankfully remained totally loyal to the Bronte text and narrative, no extra characters were added for good measure. The attention to detail in everything, sets, costumes and apearence, was sublime. Colin Firth portrayed the proud and opinionated Darcy to perfection. The drama, still remains one of the high lights of BBC production, and no wonder you enjoyed it, it was magnificent in every way.

They walk a ways back to give them some privacy, and they can tell that Darcy cares for her by how attentive he is to them, Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner, and how he’s going out of his way to extend himself socially to Elizabeth’s family to make up for his previous rudeness.

One point that's overlooked here is that Darcy wants to introduce his sister to her. Since, socially(coming from a wealthier family) Georgiana should have Elizabeth introduced to her, Darcy is subtly signaling his preference for Lizzy. One of the most romantic moments in cinematic history: Darcey, while looking directly into Elizabeth's eyes, says warmly and with conviction "I hope we shall meet again very soon". His glance then shifts to the Gardner's, offering them a friendly and respectful "Good day, Mister Gardner, Mrs. Gardner." He then looks directly at Elizabeth, pauses to communicate his continued interest/regard, and bows a sizzling "Good day, Miss Bennett." She then melts. For a guy who didn't seem to have anything approaching a clue early on he really went to school, getting it down perfectly - and with this scene Firth's Fitzwilliam Darcey, majoring in Romantic Lead, graduated the University of Austen Cum Laude.

I think I miss basic manners and common courtesy from that era. Obviously not the lack of health care or hygiene or equal rights for everyone, regardless of race or gender, but more the slower pace, pride in ones appearance and attention to detail whether it be food or dress. You had be be middle to upper class to enjoy the niceties of life back then ,otherwise it would have been brutal. I think technology has a lot to answer for as conversation is virtually non existent due to mobile phones and messaging to name but a few, and we have lost the art of treating people with respect. The reality is people have always adapted "athleisure" to be modern everyday wear. When the polo shirt or tennis shirt was created to be worn on the court instead of a dress shirt it quickly became worn outside of athletics. That's just like leggings today. To someone born in 1890 the 1960's would have seemed just as scandalous. A woman age 20 wore in 1910 (corset, long layers even in summer) then look by 1960's it's mini skirts and tennis skirts and polo shirts.

The Best Ever Version and adaptation made! 1995 - Beautifully and Perfectly done. Magnificent actors with their very high level of excellence in portraying all their roles individually and collaborating as group performance overall is superb! The soundtrack and costumes were masterly done and magnificent which bring us to the regency era enormously and undeniably the best and great experience and feelings while watching this masterpiece interpretation of the great Ms. Jane Austen literary masterpiece of all time. Loving it so much and watching repeatedly the whole series almost everyday! Well done to all and hope to find similar story in the near future! Magnificent and Superb Adaptation!! Yeah, while she may not be 'playboy blonde bombshell' type hot, she has an undeniable charisma in this film that makes the character undeniably attractive on more substantial levels. The series would not have been nearly so good if they chose a Megan Fox or Scarlett Johansson for the role. Ehle was *perfect* casting.

When I was little, my mom told me the story of Mr. Darcy and Miss Bennet. I was too young, and had a bedtime story abridged version, but I really believed that they were real people. It wasn't until I got older that I REALLY understood, and read the book by Jane Austen. I think, from that point onward, I totally, completely and impeccably fell in love with not only Mr. Darcy, but Victorian literature and culture as well. Collin Firth and Matthew Macfadyen truly do the character justice....

When Pride and Prejudice was published in 1813, farm labourers earned about £42 a year and skilled working-men, bricklayers and masons, had incomes of around £66 per annum. Darcy's annual income of £10,000 was thus vast. In today's terms, he belonged to the top 0.1 per cent of British society. Elizabeth Bennet was likewise upper class (albeit with some middle class relatives) because Jane Austen says that Mr Bennet was a country gentleman with an income of £2,000 a year, a sum whose modern equivalent would place him in the top 1 per cent of the British population. (The incomes of farm labourers etc are taken from an article published in The Economic History Review in February 1983).

I bought this DVD set about 20 years ago as a present for my wife. Neither of us were particular Austen fans at the time. We were both flattened by this production and started reading many of her books. We still break out these disks once a year or so to enjoy together. I doubt J.A. could have possibly thought her books would have such effects on people's lives hundreds of years into the future.

Could not agree more. It wasn't that people were more perfect back then. Wickham got away with his crookedness, whereas today, he would probably have been sent to jail. But people did have more of a sense of restraint and did insist on manners. Now we're living under the impression that breaking societal rules is some kind of freedom, whereas I seem to think it as engendered a perpetual race to the bottom. A lowest common denominator, where crass and lewd behaviour is seem as praiseworthy and manners are seen as repressive and backwards.
