A visit to the Mill Brook Railroad with a 3D printer

Ғылым және технология

I was visiting Aaron to 3D print some parts for the railroad. What I didn't expect was that when I arrived we would be moving the 3D printer by 7 1/2" gauge rail! Here we take my locomotive and Aaron's flatcar around the railroad doing odd tasks, including carrying the printer, plowing the snow from a siding, and even some trackwork with some experimental prototype tie plates!

2:17 - a genuine Mill Brook moment! Thank you for documenting this project, and doing the other one.

I always have fun helping Aaron with the railroad. There’s so much to tinker with and work on.

Good to see you Jared. Now you have to test them in real cold, heat, with contaminants like oil, creosote. In rail crossing with real cars weight passing on....... Since i´m a neanderthal with those technology, can you test with different plastics ? Can old one been melted and reused ? Of course without copyright anybody can copy. But isn´t it a hobby with sharing knowledges and try ? There is already metal and plastic molded ones on the market. Are yours more economical ? Would you like to produce thousands of them ? So many many questions..... Good work and hope for the best ! Cheers 😊

Hey, yeah, happy to talk about it. It’s mostly an experiment. The plastic I’m using is about the most robust material that is available to me as far as plastic is concerned and is unlikely to be short lived if done properly. Metal ones would probably be the next step. Old ones probably could be recycled if you really wanted to, but any impurities in the plastic would need to be removed in that process. I would not say that the way I’m making them on the printer is any cheaper than if a mold was used. It’s more frustrating if anything. I did try two different plastics but there are only so many options for this printer that are suitable for this sort of use. Many plastics available do have strength tests available to read about.
