Honestly, a whole 2022 mood.

Frantic cleaning up when you have parents of grandparents visiting is a constant in every century ... lol

My ex husbands mother was horrible, I hated her. My present husbands mother was the sweetest, most kind woman you ever met! I miss her terribly. I wish I could still call her and talk. Not all mil are nasty,just 90%!! Lol

How Lucy stopped to gather herself for the doom awaiting her in the other room is how I feel at family gatherings.

My mother-in-law does the same thing...runs her finger along the furniture to check for dirt. Interesting how mother-in-laws are the same today as they were more than 200 years ago.

Oh my goodness, when Benjamin snickered *7:32 I think it was real and he went out of character. I lost it and started laughing too! I know Justine usually helps Lucy bathe but, l was a little shocked she was in the room while Benjamin was in the tub. Yes, l noticed he was modest and covered but still, it was 1820-ish. 🤷🏻‍♀️ l absolutely love this show!

Yes Benjamin, please have a bath after a fortnight. And yes, please get mom tipsy so she'll take a nap....I need the break!!!

I've rather done that.I worked at Plimoth Plantation for many years, and that's pretty close. We never had to do without toilet paper, though. That's something one doesn't think of, but it can be a deciding factor.

I've enjoyed this channel very much. I'm a bit of an American History buff myself and some of my ancestors were some of the first settlers in West Central IL in the 1820s. In fact, one of my great, great, great, great? grandmothers was the first white child born in that Schuyler / Brown county area. They were Vandeventers. Still some descendants in that area today along the IL River bluff. Fairly good documentation of their early life there. Interesting stories of native American interactions.

Justine must have muscles of steel what with the cast iron cookware and the old grinding equipment.

Makes you appreciate what you have.

Honestly, Lucy's skin is beautiful already. Her MIL is full of beans

We were a happy exception :) My husband referred to my mother as his "girlfriend" - nobody could talk baseball and football with him the way she could. He really misses her since her passing. (As do I.)

I love the expressions and the ruling of the eyes whenever the mother-in-law speaks. Who thinks of these little stories to do and how do you script them? They're great I just love it. And yes we all agree Justine has enough work to do. ❤️😀

This isn't much different than my granny showing up for a visit. Brings back fond memories. I remember some mild criticism - I was supposed to use my toast to move food on my fork. Using your knife, like the Europeans, would be vulgar thing to do at the dinner table. To this day, it still bothers me when I see people using their knife to put food on their forks. Oh, and you don't "huh?" You say "what?" Dogs get mad, but people get angry. People don't get mad. The same thing going on between Frenchy, Ron, and Mrs. Stevenson is the same stuff that just happened in my own family in recent times. Nothing has changed. And my ancestor was a French singleton from France. He made it through as a Private in the revolution. Blacksmith. He married the youngest daughter of the family he was indentured to. An upper-middle class family. I'm pretty sure he was cleverly deceptive and they had lots of children. I don't believe he had ill-intentions though. Anyway, this is an amazing amazing show. I hope more come out.

That steam chair reminds me of a similar tactic my mom uses to clear sinuses, putting a cough drop in a cup of hot water and then draping a towel over the cup and the congested person’s head. Works like a charm.

I'm very surprised that Justine, a female servant in the household, is assisting Benjamin with his bath. I could see the wife doing this, but not a teenage girl, even if she is a relative. Was this common practice in the Federal Era? Was it documented that the female servant/relative serving in the household performed these duties? I thought that a man of Benjamin's class and standing would have a male body servant to help with these duties during the 19th century, even during the Federal Era. Thank you in advance for answering my question!

I can tell you for certain that a butler/valet was never employed in the Stephenson House. There are records of all of the servants that were hired. Most of them were indentured servants because slavery was illegal in the state of Illinois. These indentured servants would have had contracts with the master of the house Benjamin Stephenson. They primarily worked outside on the 170 acres that made up the property as well as helping with food prep and cooking. Female servants often cared for both the men and the women of the household if the house was more modest. More modest homes often could only afford to hire one servant who acted as a cook, cleaner, ladies maid etc. It was common for servants to do multiple jobs in a household.

Sorry to respond 3 months later, but have you heard of Townsends? Their channel has a lot of 18th century American homesteading content along those lines, you might really enjoy it!

The mother in law is the ONLY one who knows the proper tone and dialog of that era. I have watched several of these and they use words and nuances that don't match that era.
