A village disappeared!, Haweswater Reservoir and Mardale village, Cumbria

Спорт

In the valley of Mardale, the Haweswater reservoir saw the flooding out of a village that is now a magnet for divers. A fascinating dive into the past, along a river bed & old pebble track road.
Diving under and above the Mardale bridge is a must do.
Identifying what is road, and what is river bed can be 'a gas' :-) as both are similar.

Divers
United Utilities don’t want anyone to Swim or Dive in any reservoir, but these activities are untaken ‘unofficially’ by individuals every summer. They cant resist. For divers, its easy enough to stay 2 feet off the bottom so we don’t disturb any soil - especially necessary when filming at any location in the Lakes.

We believe diving is safe when performed by competent and well-trained divers.
Always ensure you dive as a buddy team in the lakes and at any other time! Use all safety devices as you deem necessary.
SMB and Strobe are strongly advised, as are powerful marine torches. In the sea I personally carry one torch, BUT in the lakes I carry FOUR ! - 3 attached to my helmet for hands free work, and the big one in my hand.

Haweswater is a special place to visit after a long heatwave, it's spectacular to see the sunken village of Mardale. Visitors can see roads, bridge church & houses clearly when the reservoir is low, it's great for tourists & photographers. 👍👍👍💝💝💝😊😊😊

Hi Paul, great channel and very educational. It was a pleasure to have met you yesterday ;-) Be cautious of channels asking you to be "KZread friends". They are generally scams and best not to replay, or even delete them.

Nice one Paul. Its a place I have never been to but I will be visiting if I'm spared till after the pandemic. I believe the fishing is free you only need your Environment Agency Licence. Blea Water above is also free and its one of four Blea tarns in the lakes.

Blea tarn, one of four, yes, that had me confused when i was trying to research 'blea tarn', but i wanted the one at Haweswater lol. Took some climbing to get to Blea thanks to me taking a wrong turn initially and ended up at Small tarn, then wondering where's the dam? I ended up at small tarn lol. Then had to crab across to Blea - thank heavens we had our Meindl boots on! Great hike for anyone wanting to get off the beaten track a little - but there is a well trodden path around Blea and up tot he Roman road walk i believe they call it? Anyone wishing to add to this are welcome to in the comments below - thanks.

Mardale didn't disappear in 1929, as per your title. The valley was not fully flooded until 1940. The residents of Mardale became aware they would be required to move around 15 years before the valley was flooded. I think the last few left about 5 years before the dam was completed. The houses and farms in the village had to be demolished, with the wooden parts removed, as they could have floated down to the dam and blocked vital outlets. The graves in the churchyard had to be exhumed and reburied elsewhere......

Thanks very much for the detail here Brian. 🤝👍 Always a pleasure to meet historians - I never found anything in the papers about this dam, but i found plenty on Thirlmere! Kind of suggests something unsavoury at play here with the politicians of the day. I dont recall seeing any mention of the plight of the people at Marsdale. I was using the boards at the dam site and during on-line research I came across the history which states the dam build began in 1929. This led me to believe that everyone would have been forced out of their homes before works began!? It further stated that everything had been demolished by 1935. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haweswater_Reservoir

@@AdventuresandLifestyle You could take a look at the Shap Historical Society ( they do have a website). They have lots of old photos and documentary evidence of past happenings in Mardale before construction of the dam commenced. They also have several informative publications and leaflets with information. These can be obtained only from the Society themselves (details are on their website). Many of the farming community at Mardale were fortunate enough to find other farms or smallholdings to move to. The landlord of the Dun Bull Inn at Mardale moved to ( from memory) the Greyhound pub in Shap. Most of the exhumed remains from Mardale churchyard were re-interred in a specially dedicated section of Shap cemetery. Again, from memory, I think the last person to pass away who actually lived in Mardale, died in the late 70's or 80's...... The school house in Mardale was moved - stone by stone - and rebuilt back down the road, about a mile or so towards Bampton. A large carved boulder, with faces and other things carved on it by the schoolchildren in Mardale, is still sited outside the gate of the rebuilt school, as it was originally, when it stood in Mardale. Here's a old short clip of Haweswater dam under construction in 1937 kzread.info/dash/bejne/o5uAlsFrc7PHk5s.html

I'm surprised diving is allowed here. United Utilities do not usually allow fishing or other water based activities on their waters.

Thanks for the great question - As is normally the case for Divers, permission has to be given at the present time in 2020. The situation in the past was different to the current situation, and as things move forward, the situation will undoubtedly change as in the case of our next videos covering Ennerdale. Water based activities are allowed on most of their waters including fishing with inorganic lures. Another example of things changing is Loweswater, where no water activities were allowed there, but they are now. Its a constantly evolving situation and in the future it will be interesting to see where we end up manly thanks to insurance policies and changing Governance on any of the lakes & reservoirs. All lakes have their waters tapped by UU. at the end of the day and the trend is set to increase with rivers included in the mix too. Thanks for your interest & visiting Brian.
