That or "The Resurrection Men." It was so hard to get bodies for medical studies since you couldn't freeze them and you needed someone who was either otherwise healthy or died of a disease that needed study. You even had some folks who sped up the process by just killing people to sell the bodies to the University of Edinburgh.

yeah on top of that there was a surprising amount of nice touches, like the mourning treats that usually have a skull on them or mentioning the post-mortem photos that were really popular. even aside from the very *fabulous* gothic aesthetic it makes complete sense for lorraine to be wearing full black all the time since mourning attire was worn for quite awhile. really cool. (only thing that bugged me was the corset thing, but eh whatever its so engrained in media that they were torture devices that had women fainting left and right when they really just.. werent.)

The sound of snapping bones, the pure violence of stomping on a bag full of cats, the blood seeping through the bag, the screams and yowls… The developer really did a good job at making it as horrifying as possible The fact that they’re inside a bag makes it even worse because it leaves our imagination to create what it would look like in the inside

I like what they had going and a lot of work went in. But it could have been put together a bit better. Not bad overall though.

It's horror writing nonsense, don't believe everything you see in the media; my great-great-great grandfather is in my basement playing Hacky-Sack with my recently deceased dog right now and it's great, they're doing just fine.

My theory is that there's nothing supernatural going on, just Lorraine going insane out of grief. Unburying all the bodies, killing cats, etc because she's convinced her husband is still alive and needs to be fed. Kills the undertaker for fresh meat. And I suppose the ending represents her falling down the stairs and landing in the basement full of corpses, dying and symbolizing her being buried in a mass grave as well.

This game leaves us asking a few questions as to why we see her husband undead and what is this epidemic going on causing a massive grave site. It was not until Manly said that this game serves establishing a universe so perhaps in future games we see Lorraine from a different protagonist perspective.

In fact, it's speculated that the "American Vampire" Mercy Brown likely died from it; didn't help that she died during winter, so lack of decomp when she was dug back up spooked the superstitious folk only worse.

@@tanujak98 It still feels to me like the game is doing a sneaky little bait and switch, cause tb doesn't cause you to become a blood craving monster, and the game even gives another bait and switch if you know what Resurrectionists were by making you think the fortified coffins are thought to be a deterrent for them from what Lorraine says, when odds are it's actually cause rumors are starting to spread about the dead coming back to life and either the richer families that can afford it, or the government is trying to slow it down with the coffins.

... I'm pretty sure her biggest secret is that she isn't a vampire. Like, not even the vampires believe her when she tells them she's not a vampire.

i love seeing gothic elements in games its so cool, also the absurdity of her wearing sunglasses underneath a veil lol

Maybe unrelated, but there was that one episode of Rugrats where Didi had a cousin Ben getting married but the bride got cold feet and ran away. The bride's name is Elaine, not Lorraine, but Ben calls out her name at different points in the episode. The tone is comedic rather than tragic, though, as Ben as asked to describe Elaine to wedding guests and cannot even remember her hair color.

Maybe it's my weakness for puns talking here, but it feels a little like the entire concept might have started with someone's encountering the terms "consumption" and "resurrectionists" in a history book and letting their imaginations run wild with alternate meanings for the terms. Resulting in a entire, albeit short, but artistically gorgeous horror game, all based on a few plays on words! Heck, even the part with the cats is a little more forgivable if the excuse more wordplay: the cats did what was natural, and fought like "cats in a bag", and she reacted the way she did because her temperament had deteriorated to the point that she was "a bag of cats" herself

That was really good looking game. I wish more people would do this retro style more than super filtery vhs ones. Really love the aesthetic, they really nailed the gothic victorian loo, to the point i actually want those clothes.

It's a bit funny when the options are 'oh i cant keep feeding my undead husband smlal animals, guess ill go for people' when they have money on them clearly. Girl just buy a cow?

I think she avoided anything too large because she would have had to hide the cow/pig/horse whatever in the cellar. A pig? Maybe. But she wouldn't have the strength to bring a large animal down there nor would she have been able to kill them by herself. Arguably, she could have purchased meat from the butchers (even the discarded/inedible parts) but it would have looked suspicious for her to buy so much. She doesn't have any servants, so she wouldn't have an excuse for buying so much meat. Her husband was kind of lucid when he first came back, but if he's now a monster, I'm surprised she didn't think "oh, he's nothing like my husband anymore. I should put an end to his misery/I should stop this before it gets out of hand".

@@kero6298 I think there are 2 animals she could realistically farm: chickens or rabbits. But I really don't know if she'd be successful when you consider how long it takes for either animal to get fully grown and that she likely doesn't have any experience/knowledge of how to farm them. She would have the same problem if she had to buy in bulk from the local butchers. And if her husband's appetite increased to the point that a rabbit/chicken a day wasn't enough to sate him, she'd run into the same problem. I mean, at a certain point, the logistics of trying to continually feed her husband are gonna catch up with her. There's an epidemic in the town resulting in mass graves. It's only a matter of time that she runs out of "food" options/that the town becomes suspicious of her.

The game itself is *beautiful* and Lorraine reminds me of *Cereza* (Bayonetta). I like how the style seems like an old PS2 game or something and the overall quality looks amazing. It would be interesting to see a very long game with this style and story concept. This game also reminded of *Bloodborne* as well in some ways, due to the darkness of the World and the characters and due to mysterious revival magic madness and strange blood curses. It was very intriguing to see how each part played out. 🙃 n_n

my thoughts exactly, about the hellraiser lines, i wonder if that means one has watched the movie too many times, or if it's just that memorable, mine might be the first case,

I love all of Lorraine's dresses! 🌑 🕶️🖤

_Cool vampire gothic aesthetic_ Nice mixture of the 1800's vampire panic with deaths of loved ones from tuberculosis, and slasher gore. It looks like her husband was the "vampire", she fed him, contracted either tuberculosis or became a vampire because of him. I laughed when MBH said she looked "great" because she looked literally like death - pale skin, hollowed eyes, sensitivity to light. But our MBH likes the goth girl look, so someone looking like death looks hot lol. The aesthetics were great, but the game ended way too abruptly. I'm hoping that it will be expanded into a larger game or world-building for a new game.

this gives Rule of Rose vibes mixed with bloodborne aesthetic, also loved how manly stopped to admire the outfits lol

So, what did we learn today? Manly is very into Victorian Gothic fashion. And I approve. A man of excellent taste.

For such a short game it certainly had a vibe. Gothic horror just has a style that can't be beat.

Even empty like manly soul trash can looks pretty fancy in this game, finally some appreciation

The part where the husband burst in the door and fell to the ground, and demanded Lorraine didn’t look at him while also asking for help, reminded me of Hellraiser where Frank Cotton comes back from his doom and Julia finds him. The dialogue they both exchange is almost equal word for word.

Such a beautiful, impressive title. They nailed the gothic atmosphere from start to finish. Despite a short runtime, I found myself quite interested in where it was going. If this does turn out to be connected to their next title, I'm already invested.

This game's art direction is so gorgeous.

As a corset wearer, when she said "I'm lightheaded" I was internally like *you better not be tight lacing!!!*

Avoid 18:21 - 18:36 if you want to skip over the cutscene showing what happens to the cats.

Ah, I checked the description and I figured it was a Sweeney Todd reference. Sweeney Todd's original name is "Benjamin Barker" which is most likely where Lorraine Barker is inspired from. and the kidnapping cats part was most likely inspired by the song "Worst Pies in London" that talked about using cats for meat pies. 😂 The ending where she gets trapped in the cellar and get killed by person she loved is also very reminiscent of what happens in Sweeney Todd.

The style of the in-game cutscenes REALLY reminds me of the Witcher 1, especially the cutscene before the title screen, where Geralt fights the Striga

This game has so much character and love put into it. I feel like this is more in line with what I expect from a short, retro style horror experience with how it captures the feeling of playing an early PS2 game.

This has like.. Slight American McGee's Alice vibes and I'm here for that.

Man, the style for this game is delightful! The outfits were so cool and the characters deisgns were so beautiful and elegant. I was in love with the Guard's masks! Also I love how Lorraine walks, so elegantly with her hand up. Pretty cool game, short but cool, with nice designs, artstyle and an interesting world

I like the atmosphere and the art style, especially the smoke/chalk drawing of items. I just wish that there was a bit more gameplay. It feels like you play a bit and there is immediately a cutscene/jump in timeline.

A ''resurrectionist'' in Victorian England was a grave robber who dug up freshly buried corpses to sell to medical institutes for dissection. Some families resorted to putting iron cages over the graves for a while, and would remove them for aesthetics once the body was assumed to have decayed enough to no longer attract a grave robber (it wouldn't be valuable if heavily decayed).

@@flyingcapsicum I don't think so, because he was supposedly given a "proper burial" and therefore wouldn't be in the house basement unless he actually did walk back in as a zombie... which I didn't really think about. The man who got Loraine is someone I thought she just didn't kill so much as torture to near death and merely thought she'd killed.

I love the art direction they went with. I love how Lorraine is basically a desexualized Bayonetta and it kind of works. The animations and English translations are janky though, but overall I'd love to see a more feature length game using this setup.

Pretty aesthetic, yet incredibly dark storyline…

Gameplay being a bit bog standard aside, the stylization was phenomenal. The older style graphics really helps sell the gothic style it was going for and the animations were beautifully done. Particularly Lorraine's how she was always very proper throughout and took on a much more feral stance once she was in killing mode. Story was also rather nice. Always appreciate characters who have a very clear motivation on why they become twisted instead of characters who are just inherently evil. Such as how Lorraine seemed quite alright with cats at the beginning but began to really despise them once she started to kidnap them. Gameplay is where it falls flat unfortunately which is kind of the sad reality of a lot of these types of games.

Really enjoy Manly appreciating and loving the clothes the protagonist was wearing. I love her style too, Manly

really like the aesthetic in this. She has this bayonetta look and everything feels goth, with the colors and details. Really cool.

You voiced the guard very well with mask and all of them. This is why I prefer to watch you play horror games than others. Overreactions can ruin the mood of the game sometimes. Ps. I fell asleep watching one of your videos last night because of your voice seemed likely calm for me.

I really wanted to love this game, theres a lot of cool stuff about it... but the part with the cats... that was a nope from me.

Not only the graphics and sfx (those poor cats!) but the music is really well done, too. That slow, tense build is perfection

Loved the aesthetics of this game. Looking forward to seeing more from the developer!

I somehow expected the lady to do some freestyle pistol combo.

Woah an early manly video nice no matter the time of day its always a good time for manlyhero. She deserves her end after what she did to the cats..

The monochrome item illustrations and lighting cues remind me of The Path. Granted, this game is much less obtuse in execution. I love The Path to bits, but it can be such a slog.

The art style is gorgeous. I love Lorraine's outfit. 🖤

This had a very interesting and kinda of surreal gothic horror style going on and the most fabulous outfits haha.

Loved that ManlyBadassHero made the voices behind the masks authentic!

I wish the game had gone for the direction of "to hell with the zombie husband, widow life forever" and the plot is to successfully put his dead ass back in his grave. And adopt all the cats in the process.

I had to stop watching when she mentioned feeding him the cats but from what I seen it looks beautiful. I really love the aesthetic

Love the style in this game. Whoever made this needs to get this onto one of the consoles ASAP!

Love the cinematography of the cutscenes. I'd like to see more of what the creator does and who she/he is as a person.
