A Victorian Bashlik hood

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I know I promised to post a video about the national costume shirt next but I got stuck with that video and then got on with other projects. So, here is something else: a video about a Victorian hood-scarf called Bashlik. After finding some pretty museum examples I wanted to make myself one as it looked warm and practical.

Thank you for spreading awareness about the bashlik! (And for reminding me about them, because I almost forgot 😉) In Russian culture, they are discussed quite a bit actually, especially in poetry and literature. This video is very well done and was highly informative. Thank you for the pattern as well, I think I will make one! Your bashlik and entire outfit are beautiful.

Been there done that! I did the video last year. You have a lot more colourful heritage. I’m 99,5 % Finnish! But that is common in Finland where we’be been quite isolated from the rest of the Europe. The language doesn’t help things much! My husband got the full 100 % when je got the test done!

@@withmyhandsdream Oh I had no idea! I'll have to watch it then 😊 Hahaha that's very impressive! I've been to Finland quite a bit actually, usually on my way to SPB as I would take the train. It's a lovely place.

That would be perfect for these prairie winter temps and winds . I have grey wool which would work , have seen a lot pics of them but never connected dots for actually making one . Thank you for video !

Cool never knew this is what's called. I asked my family last Christmas to knit one of these for me. It was soft but didn't exactly protect well against winds and wasn't balanced well - I love that tassel for giving a bit of counterweight. I am planning on making one from fabric.

You could always line your existing hood with fabric? Although, sewing another isn’t a bad idea either!

Kiitos!

"Başlık" or in English writing "bashlik" is a Turkish word. It is a word used for anything you wear on the head. I did not know that it became the name of a certain hat. Actually the one you show is stranger for Turkish culture.

Yes, I’m sure the hat changed a lot during its journey. My bashlik is especially a Victorian fashion item.
