A Vibrant Life - One Couple's Journey With ALS

Jon Ferraiolo has seen a linear decline in his motor neuron functioning since he was diagnosed with ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig's disease) in 2014, but the Palo Alto resident and his wife, Karen Kang, have decided to transcend the disease as best they can. Yes, the people are wonderful with one another, but I couldn't help loving the way that their dog was right by their sides and on their laps throughout the video. Such love all around. 🥰🐾

John...you are gaining a lot of admirers! You are happy in your marriage and family and that is so so obvious. I wish you the very best, and Karen will make sure you are given the very best. Karen made a very good choice when she married you. You and Karen have something quite special.

Such an amazing family. It’s an awful disease but it’s so lovely to see how strong and in love they are. I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2012, at the time I grieved for the loss of my good health, I worried constantly about the future. My MS nurse really taught me about living for the day with the words “all any of us have is today, tomorrow is not promised “.

An inspiring story whether you know this couple or not. I know them and love them, and am more moved than I can say. I hope I can face the difficulties sure to come as I get older even half as well as Karen and Jon are facing theirs.

The cause/cure needs to be found. What do all people who have this condition have in common! All information should be pooled, surely! There are a number of possibilities: 1. iron overload - supplements can cause problems in people who don't do well on extra iron; cod liver oil can raise ferritin levels (iron storage) dangerously high which can lead to infections (I have article/comment that describes a first-hand experience with CLO culminating in infections and hospitalization). All supplements especially oils and fat-soluble vitamins should be used sparingly and with caution (watch out for side effects). 2. So many people with this condition were super fit at some point; does overheating the brain through chronic exercise perhaps cause damage to a certain part of the brain? 3. As mentioned in point 2, do certain drugs, antibiotics and any unknown factor (energy drinks perhaps) overheat the body/brain causing damage in susceptible (for whatever reason) people. There has to be an answer lurking somewhere!

Lost my father nov 14, 2020 after about 3 or 4 yrs, I have trouble remembering how long because there was 1 whole yr without a diagnosis, so I'm guessing between 3-4 yrs, horrible disease, he choose no life prolonging measures, besides a feeding tube, it was sad seeing him struggle to breath near the end. He went home on hospice after a week long stay in the hospital beginning on labor day.

This is a great story, but unfortunatly not all ALS patients are as lucky. Most lose friends and family. Many have no help other than husbands, wives or their children and many are even in nursing homes due to no one at all to care for them. Most also can not get all the helpful tech, gadgets or equipment needed to deal with this horrid disease. Many end up in nursing home because they can not get help with home modifications needed to stay in their home. I love that they are sharing these stories to bring light to ALS, but how about showing the ones who lose more than their limbs!!
