Although I understand why people don't like the Umbridge stuff in 2021, I still love the songs and moments simply because I think Joe sells them so well. In pretty much any other show or group it wouldn't be as good/tolerable, but damn, the writers and actors are SO in love with what they ar doing that I get caught up in their energy

Since I can't help myself, I just have to state my opinions, here's the long comment: Disclaimer: I liked this list a lot, I even fully agree with most of the comments. However, obviously there are some things I'd disagree with. We're different (not as can be, but still) people after all. Here are some unorganized thoughts: Personally, while "Umbridge arc" is kinda iffy in current world, it still is sufficiently original to not annoy me much. It's not the same_reactionary_joke_about_the_trans_issues_ever (also if I recall correctly, she's actually a cis woman in the show, to a big surprise for Dumby, who hoped for a Drag Queen), so it's not really that tiring. Though I won't defend Stutter more, as it's not a great song either way imo. I disagree on the placement of "Missing You". Yes, it has a certain common structure to it, but all but the best songs have that property as well, and out of the Starkid male duos, that one I think is the best one, it is absolutely necessary to the Quirrelmort arc, builds some interesting parallels and Brosenthal's vocals are simply beautiful (the rest of the song is as well). I'd rank it in my top 10. While we're on Quirrelmort, I'd rank "Different As Can Be" a bit higher. Imo it has the most hilarious lyrics in the whole of starkid, though I understand it doesn't have the same "singability" as some other Starkid hits. On the other side, I personally don't like "Not Alone" that much for the exact reason you listed earlier. It just feels "too cliche" for me. It's not bad by any means, but it doesn't stand out for me. Personally I'd rank "This is the End" higher. It's not brilliant, but I can't deny it's a bop. "To Dance Again" is not necessary my cup of tea, musically speaking, but I really like "Always Dance". I guess I'm weird. I adore Jeff Blim's voice, I think he's one of the greatest singers in Starkid (yeah, you guessed it, I was raised on hard rock), but "Get in my Mouth" feels really out of place in the narrative. It's a cool song, but I'd rank it somewhere around the middle. Finally, I like that they decided to go a little "metal" with "Voldemort Is Going Down" (when done right, it resulted in "Twisted", which is imo in the top 3 best Starkid songs period), but this time it felt a bit repetitive. I won't try to make a full list, that's too much thinking, but if I were to make the top10, it would be something along the lines of: 10. "Wizard of the Year" 9. "Missing You" 8. "Everything Ends" 7. "Sidekick" 6. "Different As Can Be" 5. "Days of Summer" 4. "Always Dance" 3. "Harry Freakin' Potter" 2. "To Have a Home" 1. "Back to Hogwarts" (duh)

honestly im sooooo surprised that “I was” is ranked so low bc its lowkey my favorite song from avpsy but I respect your opinion either way !!! and all this video proved is how much I absolutely adore this trilogy and how I need to rewatch it !!!

i feel bad for liking joe walker as umbridge. yes, i know it is problematic and that it shouldn't be excused, and i get the whole thing being "man playing a woman" but i feel the joke is more to do with joe walker being umbridge specifically? like, pick the "big buff man" to play a feminist umbridge and i feel the casting was to do with the group they had. i also think it's just the way they put umbridge into the story that makes it problematic - i think without the whole dumbledore bit, it would have been so much better, and i can get how at the time, it would have been funnier and less problematic. i don't know... i think remove the weird voice and the whole dumbledore storyline bit with umbridge, and it would be "less" problematic in a sense and just be more like the whole having lauren as draco. long story short, i feel the idea is good in theory, but the execution was just not right, with the script *and the voice*. i will still enjoy stutter though, and no one can stop me.

I don't see how that's different from Draco, Crabbe and Dean all being played by women or McGonnagal being played by a man. And I REALLY don't get how her voice is problematic...

@@justmebeingmyself4679 even though the character isnt trans, there are a lot of "trans" stereotypes that the jokes rely on (and I say "trans" because they arent correct of trans people) of it being a man in a dress, and the whole relationship with Dumbledore that is built on her being mistaken for a man I do also get where you are coming from with your draco point, and other characters like that - I dont think that's the issue here, hell, I've been cast as men before in shows. Its the fact that with umbridge, the whole joke of the character is that it is a man who looks very "masculine" playing a woman, and giving her very stereotypically masculine traits. I dont mean to say they intentionally did it to be problematic - nick lang has talked about how they now recognise it's not great. But like I said in the original comment, i think the joke was more about it being joe walker than it being a man, but that doesnt stop the fact that it relies on the facts its "man in a dress". Its a bit like the Devin as Cho - they didnt make the choice to be problematic, they did it because of the group and the dynamics they had as friends and so to them for their little college show, casting their very southern white friend as cho was funny, but now looking back, Devin very much steps away from cho as she feels she took the role from the woman who played lavender. Both these shows (AVPM+S) are both very much products of their time, which is why they have bits which wouldnt be okay for them to do now but were "fine" then In terms of voice? I have no idea - I posted that comment a couple years ago, so I probably saw something talking about it being problematic, but have no idea now what that would be Coming back to this two years later, I no longer feel bad for liking joe as umbridge, but I still get the arguments of it being (albeit accidentally) problematic Does that make sense? @@mollywinchurst2056 Yes, that absolutely makes sense! Thank you for the fast reply! I see your point, especially since you elaborated it further. But, even now, being aware of the kinda problematic side of her portayal, I still enjoy Umbridge as a character and how Starkid managed to completely change her but still kind of keep her true to the original. And I still love how she displays many characteristics that modern society teils us are "manly" (like eating nothing but protein shakes, falcon eggs and ROCKS!!!) but even the narrative tells us that it doesn't make her any less of a woman. She's kind of a feminist icon, really. And I think that somehow the fact that she's played by a man is helping with that, and I don't know if that makes sense, but it feels right in the moment. All in all, "Stutter" is still a bop. (As for the whole Dumbledore storyline, yeah, it makes me a little bit uncomfortable, too. Especially the part where Dumbledore tells Snape about how he disapperated after seeing her genitalia, which gives me the weird, icky vibe of the old sitcoms where a man would tell his buddy a story about "catching a trans" or something. But I like the second part of the story, because it establishes Umbridge as a character. I mean, it makes sense, looking at her upbringing, that she would have such a low self esteem that she would cling herself onto the first man that showed her affection. If this was real life, I would have preferred Umbridge's happy end being therapy and not a hot centaur boyfriend, but oh well.)

I always love your commentary! :) Yes To Have a Home is beautiful and now that you mention being 8 and reading Harry Potter it makes me think of being 11 and reading A Wrinkle in Time and for the first time really feeling like I belonged and was understood. I would bring it everywhere, and I memorized large sections of it... it meant so much to me.

Umbridge is the reason I stopped watching a very potter sequal i was just to uncomfortable

Im trans and the whole Umbridge thing makes me so incredibly uncomfortable. Like not that Joe's playing her, I like how she looks with Joe playing her, but the whole Dumbledore-Stpryline is just so... no It's the reason I dont watch avps too much although it has so many great parts and songs

Umbridge has not aged well at all however Stutter is one of my favorite songs cuz I listened to it a lot after my break up. I enjoy “fuck you” breakup songs and not “I’m sad” breakup songs.

@Katie Knott well from what I know the biggest issue is the dumbledore/umbridge storyline compared to the current conservative American narrative of portraying trans women as "just a man in a dress pretending to be a woman" which is exactly what dumbledore thought about umbridge. I personally find avps umbridge quite funny compared to the books/movies (I'm sorry but Imelda Staunton always gives me the creeps now) and stutter is one of my favourite songs but that storyline was just not a very good choice and is quite cringey nowadays
