a VERY CHALLENGING week at sea

Dealing with package delays and import fees, to successfully installing the new props, to our buddy boat losing their dinghy at sea, to installing brand new lithium ion batteries, to discovering MORE damages under the freaking boat!! Will we ever catch a break?!

Frankly, the endless repairs and frustration have put me off going cruising. I once thought it sounded grand, but I don't WANT to spend my days in "exotic places doing boat repairs." Like most people, I am not nearly as knowledgeable as Keith about all of the boats systems, and it would be constant stress to have things break like this.

I built my rudders from billet aluminum, they are a two piece design and the two halves bolt together and sandwich the rudder shaft. I machined each half from 1"-1/2 aluminum plate and each side is hollowed with reinforcement ribs remaining. I designed them so they can easily be replaced in the water.

Make-sure, you have a very sturdy heavy duty battery isolation /trip switch connected to your lithium battery bank .As friends of ours a few month’s ago, sailing in the Caribbean had a direct ‘ lighting strike hit ‘on the aluminium mast which completely jumped the isolation/trip switch .Hence totally burnt out ALL the electronics on board Minstrel Dancer.

If you can get a hold of a two-piece of metal sheet big enough to sandwich the rudder (to keep rubber together) and nuts/bolts the sandwich metal sheets end together. If no problem place two screws into the rudder to prevent the two metal sheets from falling down off the rubber. After the dry dock, you can keep the sheet metal for the future in case it happens again similar to this.

Any one who has binged all the Zatara videos beginning to this one as I have has got to be stunned by the vast amount of maintenance and repairs necessary on a "yacht". And these folks are transparent on regular expenses of floating, but when it comes to the massive amount of repairs and parts replacements, that transparency disappears. in the last 3 months it has to be in the 10s of thousands of dollars and they're not done yet. Don't let them fool you into thinking this is equivalent to repairs on a land home. Impossible. The oceans are relentlessly hostile to human habitation. And without a resident full-time engineer like Keith, this boat wouldn't have made it out of the Greek port where he bought it. All I'm saying is don't buy the line that this life is cheap or luxuriously easy. Binge and draw your own conclusions.

Followed you for years. Was at that marina two years ago. I am now in LaPaz, Mexico dealing with same issue on parts. I feel like I have be scammed by DHL and FedEx the last year. In Mexico they require cash to get package. Safe travels. Loved Grenada.

Overhauling a boat is a lot like overhauling an airplane. Many parts are merely inspected, cleaned, lubricated and returned to service. Some parts, however, are always replaced, usually long before they wear out, because failure of the part (control surfaces, control cables, control pullies, control cams, rigging, sheets (lines), sails...) can result in catastrophic failure of the vessel. I just replaced my emergency brake cable and the engine's serpentine belt for that very reason. You never wait for failure.

It is like they are in a Bermuda triangle of problems and their boat has been selected and the trouble recipient. Fair winds for getting somewhere to fix the rudder. And I would definitely contemplate getting them both done. Just remember all this bad luck you have been bestowed with.

Oh customs... how lovely... I remember this happening when we sent some stuff to Europe once. It's about the worst experience anyone can have. Makes going to the DMV look like a day at the beach!

Keith, I am in awe of how much you know and how you can continuously fix things on your boat. You're proactive and Johnny-on-the-spot fixer! Very impressive. How do the kids help on the boat? Are you guys thinking about getting a newer boat in the future? Great video. Thank you. ❤

Kieth. Call up Jefa and get new rudders and have them shipped to Grenada. I did that last year and it was awesome. I went with a bit bigger and better design than OEM. My Saba 50 handles like a sports car now. You won’t be disappointed. I would also suggest the bearings that PYI sells. They are pin bearings and do a good job. Might as well replace bearings while you are at it.

Oh Renee, I’m so sorry. I thought Keith handled all of it really well. He was fixing everything and at least he knows how to fix all that stuff. You’re right when it rains it pours holy moly. That was a lot. on the flipside you do have a new boat practically. Hopefully you can get the Rutters fixed relatively fast and who knows maybe Finn is right maybe you guys are avoiding something at any rate. You are all together and safe, healthy and really that’s the main thing. Something to be grateful for. Sending love to you all. From LIZ in California.💜🐬🤟🏻😎⛵️🇺🇸
