A Useless Rambling Video of Me Taking The Xfinity xFi Advanced Gateway (XB8) Out of the Box

Ғылым және технология

www.Alfred.TV READ ME FIRST: I was prompted by one of my long-time viewers, Bobby, to film the unboxing of the XB8 Advanced Gateway (modem, rhymes with...) from Comcast. There are a few useful tips presented in this video. My OG viewers know that useful information is not normal for my content. Enjoy the video, as I filmed this crap for you! - Alfred

    @@adiblasi I would never do that. I gave it the courtesy of watching the entire thing hoping to eventually find the “how to” part. I was disappointed to find that all of the supposed “how to” videos about this modem were actually just reviews with no instructions though. I was hoping this would be different. Good luck to you though and your channel.

    Hi MA - of course, the only real way to do a true test would be to do a speed test with each cable and comparing the results. In my very humble opinion, and I’m not an expert as some of the people that have commented on this video, to me, it sounds a bit like an overkill. Perhaps scroll down on some of the very, very technical comments and ask the question to one of those people who commented on this video. I hope your set up goes well, the biggest challenge was making sure you have the latest version of the app in my condo, I’m getting about 950 down and 42 up which is within range of their gigabit package. Overall, the experience went well, and I’m able to do my live streams with a higher quality for my viewers. The only problem with my live streams is that my jokes suck, but my main viewing audience knows that already. Lol.

    Hi Allen - I went into the control panel for the gateway at 10.0.0.1. When I go into "Edit" for WiFi it gives options for "Channel Bandwidth." For 2.4Ghz it offers 20 and then 20/40; For 5Ghz it offers 20, 20/40, 20/40/80, 20/40/80/160 and for 6Ghz, it just allows 160. Not sure what issues he is having, but there were three issues noted first with an XB7-T and WIFI 6 1. SSIDs are not visible to the Wifi device 2. SSIDs were visible but the devices fail to connect with an error message that they are unable to join 3. Devices can connect but they are unable to pass traffic. In all of the above situations the solution was to log into the modem's GUI and to disable and re-enable Wifi 6 (802.11AX)

    Can I disable the built in WiFi & connect the modem to my existing Orbi WiFi mesh router?

  • @adiblasi

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi AJ - While I'm not an expert (and obviously, the unboxing was tongue-in-cheek which some people just don't get) I did poke around a few things for you. Via the web browser, with a computer wired via Ethernet to the device, if you go to 10.0.0.1 and log in as "admin" and enter the default password of "password" you can get to the device control panel. Of course, make sure you change that default password, but you CAN disable the WiFi and there IS an option to put the device into 'Bridge Mode' which basically lobotomizes the device and makes your equipment do 'the rest of the work.' Of course, you will most likely need to do a fair amount of settings changes on your router, but in theory, the fact that it has a bridge mode, you should be able to do this. As the device worked so well by itself, I never even tried hooking up my ASUS router. I used to run my AT&T uVerse in bridge mode with the ASUS, but it took me a fair amount of trial and error to get it all working. Also, scroll down deep into the early comments -- there are some REAL experts in this thread.

    @@adiblasi loved your video. I don’t think I need to mess with bridge mode, sounds tricky. I just need it to act as a “modem only” & disable its WiFi features, Because I love my Orbi mesh system, but my current modem only goes to 1gb speed. Xb8 goes bit higher & comcast told me that if I ditch my old modem they will give me Xb8 for free (no rental fee) for 2 years & remove the data cap.

    If you are looking for high performance and a customizable experience, separate devices are better. A separate high speed modem and wireless router would rock, especially if you use Ethernet cable connections designed for the higher speed and come off the wireless router to your streaming computer. However, modem router combos such as this Communist device are more convenient, easier to set up, and save space for a purpose unknown. Loved the delivery you used in the video, however guessing that you were not acting. I did learn some nice tips along the way on both the setup and the shoes. Ok, do I have after years of having to return my XB series gateway’s every 6 months found 2 issues and solutions regarding the gateways dropping connections. Firstly, the gateways run hot so I setup a fan to blow air on the gateway, it doesn’t need to be much just needs to stop air from stagnating. After doing this my connection issues reduced significantly. Second, there seems to be a problem with the 5GHZ WiFi interfering with the DOSCIS channels locking. The unit sucks up all the dust and clogs the input screen. People with pet hair need to check to bottom of the unit regularly and clean the pet hair off the fan input for XB6 and XB7. There was an issue with laptops that had a specific manufacturers WIFI chipset in them and when they were turned on it caused the 5g to hiccup. I don't have one of those laptops mine are either too new or too old. I think even people had problem by adding a Chromecast Ultra and the 5g would go nuts.

The path I took (I have Charter, they give you a simple modem for free) was Linksys WRT 1900acv2(ebay) with dd-wrt firmware, wifi turned off, and two TP-Link routers one for each side of the house, running in AP mode, along with many loose cables under the house for the wired PC's and the connect between the routers.

    It also is used to autoconfig the device on pure fibre GPON networks. The device is only a modem when you are MODulating and DEModulating RF. When you are using a pure fibre feed, it shuts of the RF modem and only uses IP and at that point the unit is not a modem, it is just a gateway.

    Take the dollar store 90 degree connector off. Do you really think that it was swept with every frequency to see if it could even pass it? Those things are worth nothing and they aren't from anybody that sells cable companies wiring. So a large company like Commscope will sell wiring to a company like Comcast and Comcast will test the wiring or connectors for their ability to pass frequencies, resist corrosion and stay tight. You've just bypassed a proper manufacturer and the testing by the end user, which is Comcast with some unknown, untested part. When designing circuit boards, you avoid making 90 degree traces because they can make a mini inductor essentially making a crossover that limits specific frequencies. The device (with the blue ring on it) on the back of the modem is probably a resistor because you network in the condo might have enough power to be split multiple times and have a loss. If you don't have the loss and plug a modem direct, it can cause the output of the modem to decrease meaning that when the signals merge back at the fiber hub, yours will be too quiet and you modem may have to retransmit its data causing it to be slow. The device actually should be at the source where the cable enters the suite. If it is too close to the RF tuner in the modem, it can act as part of the tuner. This will make more room to connect the wire to the modem. Now I want all the people who made it this far to think about all the untested home depot and dollar store wiring, splitters and ends they have installed themselves and that they are blaming their ISP for crappy service. If it were tested, it would say it on the box and have a name such as SCTE on it. People put modems on their sides so they can't cool. People put modems in a box because they don't like how they look. BTW, NEVER reuse the old power supply for a different model. If a model has more powerful wifi, they will probably need more electricity. Hitron CGN3 power supplies are not as powerful as Htron CGN3 ACR (advanced wifi) modems. What a debacle caused by people using the less powerful power supply on the advanced modem and having their modems give crappy to non existent wifi service and then blaming the cable outside or my neighborhood is busy. The networks will undoubtedly get expanded from 1-860 mhz to 1-1218 mhz and every untested incompatible dollar store item will cause issues. Even if you have splitters from your cable company, if they aren't the latest and they switch the network to the next generation your internet will get worse as the frequencies won't be passed by your older tech.

    Hi Todd - thanks for the feedback. Is there a 90-degree connector you can recommend? It really makes cable management much easier. Also the 'device with the blue' ring was described to me by the installer as a 'filter.' At this point, should I leave it in line (as you indicated it should be located at the source) or remove it? What's the better of the two choices at this point, as I don't have access to put it in line at the source. - Alfred

  • @Todd.T

    @Todd.T

    @@adiblasi You can put it inline at the wal lplate and that will buy you the space you need to connect directly to the modem without the 90 degree. Another alternative is to get a proper F-81female to female barrel connector and a short male to male RG6 coax and put it inline somewhere if you don't want to or can't put it at the wall plate. Either way, once you move the resistor from the back of the modem, the modem can go tighter to the wall and won't want or need a 90. Ask a technician on the street for a jumper and an F-81. Only a fool wouldn't give it to you knowing you could do your own wiring and cause noise and interference on the cable network. Please try Ookla tests from different servers and not just what they recommend. Some ISPs have so many gigabit capable customers that speed test 24/7, the recommended servers can't take it. This means that a smaller ISP may have more server capacity to do a proper speed test because their customers can't hit really high speeds. Where I am, I actually use a competitor's cellular test Ookla site because they cannot max it out doing cellular tests. I take a ping hit and then run the best numbers. My ISP as of Monday will be selling 8 gigabit symmetrical, so I am guessing their servers will go down like The Lehman brothers real soon. I have a 150/15mbs service from my ISP. I hit 559/107 like clockwork testing from a hardwired Android box. My network is probably more advanced than what is in your condo, but they only need to change the fiber node in the basement and the distribution points and give people the latest modems. As an aside. Full DOCSIS 3.1 with no old school carriers, just new ones, can do 10gig/10gig. The equipment in the node becomes IP fed and the RF only goes from the basement to your unit. The next gen standards, easily doable in a condo is going to be even faster....but you cannot have non compliant splitters/wiring/connectors.

    BUDDY HOW IS THIS XB8 SO FOR..

  • @adiblasi

    @adiblasi

    Hi Dee - no problem. I was originally planning to put the device into "Bridge Mode" which would basically lobotomize all of it's features and hand-off the Internet over to another device (I have a high-end ASUS router with a ton of features), however, the XB8 worked just fine 'as is' even to the point of automatically blocking inbound IP addresses that were hammering some of my devices. So, overall, all good. The one problem I had a few months ago was a MASSIVE speed drop from 980Mbps down to about 50Mbps down. Communist-Cast told me "it's the wiring into your home." I argued with them that it just doesn't drop off sharply like that -- nothing changed. We later had a massive outage in the area -- and once it came back up, the speeds were normal. As such, I assessed the problem to be at one of their central nodes, and when it got knocked out, they did some other repairs and upgrades at that location. So, again, overall, no problems with the XB8. Setup is a "3 Step" instruction card -- take it out of the box, plug it in, and download the latest app. Enjoy! - Alfred
