A TWISTED REVIEW ON A TIMELESS CLASSIC | The Little Mermaid 2023 Movie Live Action

Ойын-сауық

Hey Dumpster Divers!
Today we are in for a treat a rarely done movie review. I’ve seen the live action 2023 Disney’s The Little Mermaid remake a few times now and as a life long fan of princess Ariel I think I have enough insight to complain and praise.

Ariel’s blood sacrifice during Poor Unfortunate Souls is meant to pay homage to the original Andersen novella (like the mermaid skeleton in Ursula’s lair). In the Andersen original, the sea witch not only cuts the mermaid’s tongue out but also mixes her own blood with the potion that turns the mermaid human. Obviously Disney couldn’t cut Ariel’s tongue out, so having her rip a scale off is their way of doing that original bodily sacrifice. It also kills two birds with one stone, since now people on buzzfeed can’t say “it’s a plot hole that Ariel signs Ursula’s scroll but won’t write a message to Eric explaining what happened to her!” lol

The rock scene wasn’t CGI though (or blue screen). Look at behind the scenes videos, they were actually outside when they filmed that scene. To me it felt kinda unnatural so I don’t know if they have her on a machine to move her around the rock or what but I kinda liked it though. It could have been more smooth, natural, or graceful but I mean it’s fine and I don’t mind it. Also I’ve been keeping up with Halle and have never seen her shake while singing and conveying emotion while singing so it’s definitely something else. Also with the new songs I think you have to listen to the soundtrack ahead of time before watching the film cause they fit very well actually and it’s definitely giving musical theater. There’s a channel on KZread that put the new songs in the 1989 original film and it really works (at least in my opinion). And yeah the final battle actually scared me too 😭 this mom took her kids out of the theater in a heartbeat when Triton got disintegrated.

I have not seen the movie yet but I am so glad you reviewed this. I think this sounds amazing and I can't wait to see it. All the flack that happened seems so childish. It seems that people want to criticize and hate everything that does not fit into their narrow vision of things. It's a Disney movie for goodness sake. The kids will enjoy it and a new generation will fall in love with Ariel. This is not made for adults although adults can enjoy it too. No matter what Disney did, there would be a group of people hating on this movie. Everyone needs to see this film with a child and watch their eyes light up as they experience the story of Ariel.

Great review Doll Daddy! Its great to hear from a fan about this movie and not some critic with "WOKE!!!!!!" all over their thumbnail. I did love this movie. Saw it twice. I am collecting the merch too! I just picked up $5 Ariel lip balm up at Burlington. Halle and Jessica ATE! I was blown away by Jonah's performance the most. He didn't need to go that hard but he did. I do love the new songs even the Scuttlebutt lol. I enjoyed Melissa's portray of my favorite Disney villain as well. I also have that book on MerFolk. Kinda wish they did dive into more of its lore. My thing is, if the live action Aladdin is getting a sequel that no one really asked for, then there is no reason why this one shouldn't get one either. I've waited my whole live for a live action adaptation of this movie and am glad people enjoyed it. I always love seeing new TLM merch for you! It’s one of my favorite parts with prince Eric searching for Ariel and the song and his voice is amazing! The theater was packed. I really enjoyed Halle as Ariel and she has an incredible voice. The scuttle but is goofy but I think they added for kids because of the rapping. I also loved the live Aladdin, Beauty, Cinderella and Malificent. Your review was fun 😊

I took my 5 year old daughter to see it and started crying during the previews due to the nostalgia and how happy I was that not a single lead character in any of the blockbuster previews was white. I’m grateful she will actually be exposed to diversity in media growing up. I had just turned 4 when I saw the OG in theatres and had to leave because I was so scared during Ursula’s song. I agree this version was even darker. My daughter needed to close her eyes many times, though it was the part where Ariel said goodbye to her dad at the end that made her most upset (I had to explain she could still see her dad and was just going on vacation with Eric) I knew Haley would be incredible but I was soooo happy with Melissa McCarthy as Ursula. She nailed both the acting and singing. Javier Bardem was a little flat I agree he did seem as though he was phoning it in. I’ve seen other films he was in and he’s usually spectacular, so I expected more from him. The new songs were… okay. They were fine. Overall I thought the movie was great and lived up to my expectations. The soundtrack was great and similar enough to the original, which I listened to on repeat as a child, including the orchestral parts. There were three things that I don’t really understand the choices on: 1. The o motion of the transformation with the dress… why? This is such a show stopping and iconic moment, which would have translated Beautifully to live-action. 2. Why didn’t they let flotsam and jetsam have voices? I’m sure two fun character actors would have loved to play them. Maybe it’a because they would have been too much with them getting killed at the end? 3. Under the sea should have had the animals creating music instead of just dancing. It didn’t need to be real instruments - they could have had a baleen whale mouth harp, a lute strung with seaweed and made from a shell, etc. It’s weird to sing about an ocean band and have there be no ocean band. It just took so much away from the song by omitting the under sea band.

I saw it and loved it. But I got a bit scared of that demonic Ursula. Made me think about The Exorcist. I saw someone commenting on KZread that they're going to take their 3-year-old to see this. I'm not judging anyones parenting but gotta admit I was privately rolling my eyes thinking that the kid will be really scared. Here in Finland it's forbidden from children under twelve years old.

I’m sort of a movie buff and have watched so many reviews on this movie but I have to say yours is probably the most entertaining one to watch as well and I love your love for all things TLM 🧜🏻‍♀️🧜🏾‍♀️ (I’m that same way but with Cinderella) I honestly wished that instead of a live action remake (because I just don’t like that Disney is doing them period) that they would have made a movie focused on the sisters and all this cool lore they developed (Maybe as a series for Disney Plus?) It’s a little bit of a shame they somewhat wasted that because how many people bought and read the books before hand? Also: pwetty mermaids. That’s my pitch Disney.

Good revien on the movie. You've touched a lot of interesting points. I love Halle as Ariel. She's perfect for the role. A lot of people says she looks nothing like the animated one but I think she looks somehow just the shame ... she is gorgeous and looks very innocent just like Ariel and at the same time very brave and playful. I love Eric's song. I relate to him a lot while he's singing that song and for me it doesn't feel so much out of place ... but well maybe that's because I love that scene. I agree with you in that in the scene Part Of Your World they should have made Ariel more playful in the scene like in the animated one. Also when she's a mermaid she's pretty much just standing or sitting ... her tail is way less flexible than the animated one ... I don't like that. There's a lot of good things in this movie but it could have been better, specially because of the CGI and lack of more princessy dresses for Ariel and some bad illumination, etc.. I recently have whatched a video where a guy improved the lightning of the Poor Unfortunate Souls scene and it looks so much better than in the original. He also redesigns some other stuff of the movie but not always for better ... I don't like his redesign of Flounder.

The movie is fine. Poor unfortunate soulless cash grab is the best way to describe it. I saw it in theaters and enjoyed it for the most part. Halle Bailey's performance was one of this film's major saving graces. I thought the performances by the cast were good. I have no issues with the casting. But I think what people mean when they say the movie is "dark" is the that there is an ugly gray cast over every single frame of the film. We have edgy, grim-dark modern Hollywood realism to thank for that. But even during the jauntier musical sequences, all the colors are muted. Really killed the mood of Under The Sea for me. All in all, it was fine. Halle Bailey carried this film. Not only with her voice, but the fact that through most of the second half, she had to convey everything through facial expressions alone. A feat I find very impressive, considering in the original film, it was the animators' s who were largely responsible for conveying Ariel's emotions. And call me weird, but I didn't hate the Scuttlebutt. 🙃6/10 for me.

This movie is fine. I have no issues with Halle as Ariel. She can sing unlike Emma Watson. My issue with the movie is that Disney changed the context and the heart of the storyline of the original. That bothers me. At the end of the original movie when Eric kills Ursula that was a big moment. It’s significant that a human killed Ursula with a ship saving Ariel and King Triton’s lives as well as the other unfortunate souls thus breaking all contracts with Ursula. King Triton realizes in that moment that all humans are not bad. In Disney cartoon cannon Queen Athena and King Triton had a loving marriage. Queen Athena and Ariel look like twins. Queen Athena could also sing. She was killed by being crushed by a ship when pirates attack. “Athena's death leaves Triton completely devastated and tearful. As a result, he tosses the music box in the ocean, bans music from the kingdom, forbids contact with the land above, and raises his daughters very strictly.” So, King Triton had a very good reason to not want his daughter near the surface. You can see now that Eric killing Ursula with a ship he shows King Triton that a ship and humans may have taken his wife away but they also saved him and his daughter too. This is what helps change King Triton’s perception of the human world. Nothing wrong with Ariel being a strong independent person. She always was. But her being girl boss Ariel at the end of the movie killing Ursula herself detracts from this beautiful storyline of the original. Frankly, it’s not a good change to me but I guess it works for this live action version of TLM. The live action is not the same story as the original cartoon. It pulls pieces from it but the under pinning heart of the original storyline is not there. Adding that I liked your review very much. It was a good critique of the movie with valid points. Thanks for sharing. Lastly, I agree with the Ariel needs more outfits for merch and toy sales. Seems like that was a miss. The wedding dress would have been great to see in live action.

Saw the movie the other day but unfortunately wasn't as excited as I thought I would be. Lots of plot holes some you mentioned and some unnecessary additions such as adding an adoptive mother, talking bout sirens drowning but never going deeper into it and talking about pollution in the seas but nothing to connection the humans and merfolk to discuss these things as well as the beginning moon that you mentioned. I think there was lack of emotion in some parts as you mentioned the main Ariel song lacked the emotion by staying stationery. The voice was good but it just didn't bring the desperation and emotion. I thought there would be a reason for the diversity of the sisters but there was none and the powers etc were not brought to light which would have been nice to have seen. Ariel killing Ursula took away the one thing Eric needed to gain the respect of Triton. Never really about girl power or being strong it was about the effort of Price Eric that regardless of who Ariel was he still wanted to protect her. Also I didn't like scuttles song either but my boyfriend mentioned that scuttle butt is actually a term for sailors to gossip and drink. It's just unfortunate they thought it was appropriate to put this altogether to give a song. Pros and cons to this movie but not one I'll reach for often I'm glad you are enjoying the merch 😉 they also have clothing of the sisters on Amazon should you be interested
