A tribute to Paul Mariner: 'He always seemed to be the best of us' | ESPN FC
Спорт
ESPN FC's Dan Thomas, Alejandro Moreno, Shaka Hislop, Frank Leboeuf, Mark Donaldson and Alexis Nunes reflect on the incredible life of longtime colleague Paul Mariner, who died Friday at 68 years old. A legend of Ipswich Town, who also played for Arsenal, Plymouth Argyle and Portsmouth, Mariner represented England at Euro 1980 and the 1982 FIFA World Cup. Mariner joined ESPN FC after a decade in coaching, and every member of the panel has a story about how his infectious laugh and incredible generosity changed their lives.

I remember when I first started watching ESPN FC that Mariner and Nicol would often play off one another. I was sad when he stopped appearing on the show and its a huge loss. Prayers go to him, his family and his friends.

What i love about this is the time afforded by the producers of ESPN to properly commemorate him. Far to often on other shows with similar circumstances its lucky to get a 4 minute mention and its quickly brushed aside almost robotic. The air time, the raw emotion in this segment really is a beautiful thing and if one did not know who or what kinda guy Paul was they certainly do now. Condolences to all the ESPN crew. Touch of class this for a classy guy. ♥️

Some people live or on film or television, no matter who they are, what they look like or how they talk or act they still radiate their true inner personality. With Paul Mariner he radiated a kind, down to earth guy who was humble about who he was and who carried no ego. 2 friends of mine met Mr Mariner briefly, one as an awed kid and his memory of Paul Mariner was one of kindness and of having the time to converse with him. The other as a young man asked him a few football questions and he took the time to answer them kindly. Years later both have met other football stars but meeting Mariner stood out simply because he was so nice, down to earth and just a really nice guy.
I had to skip when Shaka started talking the first 5 seconds nearly made me cry
What a sad day for ESPN. I always felt that his presence was missing among the panel these past few years. I really feel for Stevie right now. That was his best mate. Rest In Peace Paul, you legend.
Glad espn did this. Paul was a great guy, I met him a few years back at a revolution match. He was joking with us, giving my brother a hard time for wearing a man united scarf. Paul is a true new england revolution legend
A really fitting tribute to Paul this, cheers lads; a celebration to he’s life and he’s person
Lost not just a great footballer but as shown here with that fantastic tribute we also lost a great human being.
Rest peacefully Paul from 🇹🇹
Rest in Power Mr. Mariner. It was a pleasure to watch you
Paul was my coach growing up and the best coach I ever had :) my heart goes out to his family and England.

I remember looking him up to why he hasn't been on the show and saw he was sick. It's so sad. He was really great. And the banter they all have on the show together you can tell they really care about each other

What an amazing tribute. You can tell he was a great man judging by the love you feel from the people who worked with him. Hugs to the ESPN family.
Paul is part of the huge successful jump to this channel after the 2014 world cup. Stevie loved him, always had a huge smile when Paul talked. Paul seems like a very old school charm natural likeable person.
Living in Sydney Australia, we only had Match of the Day (Jimmy Hiil) as our soccer fix - 1 hour a week. Paul was one of the first legends of the game we were introduced too. Fantasic player and striker. Thanks ESPN.
Very sad news. Paul was a classic Northern English wit. Always made me laugh when he was on the show and the chemistry with his mate Steve Nichol as well as the other pundits was a great watch.

I remember when he signed for my local team, Ipswich Town. Signing players was a rarity at Ipswich due to the club's modest finances and it's excellent youth system. I went into town with some mates to get his autograph; he was signing autographs at the main Co-op. His wife was a primary school teacher and I met several people who'd been in her class. A much respected and admired player at Ipswich.
Amazing tribute by ESPN FC.
Shaka's words are beautiful, no one could have put it better than you did. Rest in peace to a true legend.
Growing up in Ipswich during the seventies and seventies and eighties it was truly a pleasure it was truly a pleasure to have him as part of the family. My condolences go out to his family a true a true Ipswitch Town legend.

I'm just hearing this now. I'm literally in tears as I write this. Paul Mariner was one of my heroes from my earliest times playing. I will always remember the England vs. France match from World Cup '82, and Paul's goal. I wore number 11 because that's the number Paul Mariner wore for England in World Cup '82. I'm so so sad to hear this. God bless him and his family. What a loss. Nothing but love.
Ian's comment about the black jacket had me laughing. Poignant tribute guys. Did him proud.

It wasn't even until yesterday when Stevie was telling the story that I remembered he hadn't been on the shows for a while and then today I saw a post from sky on youtube that he had passed. Commiserations to family and friends. this was mad emotional
What an iconic and beautiful tribute. Paul was my favorite footballer when I grew up. A legend both on and off pitch. I will be looking forward to the book.

Excellent tribute! We forget that there is things that happen behind the scenes and that the espnfc crew are like a family. It's a proper acknowledgement. Loved the energy that Paul brought on the show and he will be missed.

Really sad. I’ve been watching this show since I was a kid and seeing all these guys bond has always been great, especially Paul and Stevie.
You guys are great! I spend a ton of time watching the show. I'm a good 3 years in and you guys are a big reason why I love this game so much. You give each other stick and dont take yourselves too serious. I watch every night! Thank you all so much for that! Thank you for sharing the stories. Thanks for all you do! Great crew, ESPN fc is my favorite show because love and friendship come through the presenters.

Maro’s was such a class act man . One of my fav pundits on this show because of his banter & jokes with Stevie.. He’ll surely be missed My condolences to his family and all the people at ESPN . Hope Stevie is doing good cause it’s not easy losing your best friend 🙏🏾❤️
Beautiful episode, beautiful tribute, rest in peace Mr. Paul Mariner
I’m thinking about the whole FC crew especially Stevie and Taylor. I know they both are very upset. Sending prayers and love to everyone.❤️🙏🏾
I grew up just next to Foxboro and had been a Revolution fan my whole life. Going to countless games with youth programs and going through the highs and also the lows with the 3 finals losses. It really felt like that group, Twellman, Ralston, Shalrie, Parkhurst etc were like family to the soccer community down there. All led by two great guys Stevie and Paul. And then obviously things changed growing up and I left the area. Fast forward to a few years ago when I started tuning into ESPN FC, I had the biggest smile on my face when I realized Stevie and Paul were part of the team. It brought back so much nostalgia and I enjoyed them very much. This weirdly hit very hard and I hope Stevie is doing alright
ESPN, This is the perfect tribute to the Legend that is Paul Mariner!
Show was so emotional Dan such a good presenter
Thank you to ESPN FC for sharing to us all the news of his passing and for allowing us to feel how much he meant to each of you. God bless Pauls family and friends during this emotional time. A big to hug to you all
May he rest in peace. My heart goes out to the team as well as Stevie. This must have been hard to film but it has always been very clear how much the team loves him as a former player and colleague with how they always talk about him.
That Ipswich team of the late 70s and early 80s was a special team.Butcher,Mills,Thyssen,Muhren,Gates,Mariner of course.
That was so nice lads well done
I never really had friends growing up and soccer was what gave me life. In the summer after 8th grade, I enjoyed watching ESPN FC. Paul was an integral part of the crew and I enjoyed listening to his insights and knowledge on soccer. Rest In Peace Mr. Mariner. You will be missed. ❤️
Oh no. That makes me so sad. He was humble and funny. Thank you for all you have done to make people happy.

It’s Sad. You can see the crew doing their best to hold back the tears. Rest In Peace Paul Mariner.
I started watching espnfc with Paul and Stevie talking about their work together on the managerial side. He always had this reassuring confident calmness that would appease everybody in a middle of a furious debate.

This was very beautiful to watch. I only recently started following espn fc and the fun and camaraderie the group has is the highlight. I never saw Paul mariner as a player or an analyst but your tributes made him feel special to me too. Rest in peace Paul.
Mariner is a class act, seems rational and never an arrogant man.
I grew up in Suffolk and Paul Mariner was one of the first footballers I knew of and idolised. My condolences to all who knew and loved him.
So sorry to hear of Paul's passing. I remember seeing him play for Plymouth Argyle. He was a great player.
It's still numbing that he's gone. Just can't believe it. Definitely was an amazing and fun pundit on the show and the relationship he had with Stevie was one to marvel at. Definitely was a human who represented the good that football and humanity can give.

This is one of the most touching things I have seen. It makes it clear that Paul was a very special person.
Paul Mariner was Ipswich. Thank you Paul for the memories during my teens.
Top player but I’m sure these guys who knew him would say,an even better man.
Ale talking about Paul made me cry. When Paul stopped coming on the show, I often wondered what happened. If ESPN ran his contract out and didn't want him back, if they had other player experts they wanted to showcase or if maybe Paul wanted to move on (though that seemed unlikely because he genuinely looked like he loved being on the show especially with Steve). I remember when I started watching ESPN FC how he reminded me of a beloved Mr. Magoo type... his ability to laugh at himself and be happy with others laughing at his expense... I hope I can learn to be that humble and down to earth. It might be me but I also felt Paul's genuine love for people did have a positive effect on all he knew. I only saw the way he interacted with his co-workers/ESPN family but things like how Dan and Ale did quite make fun of him the way they do with others like Frank or Gab or others... everyone took care to understand each other and respectfully conduct banter accordingly. I wonder if health was the reason Paul abruptly stopped coming on the show. And yes or no I wonder if got to spend time near the end with his family and loved ones. My thoughts and prayers go out to him, his family, his friends, and countless others who loved him and whose lives he elevated. Rest in peace Paul Mariner.
