A TRAIN TRACK JUMPS UNDER PRESSURE! WATCH IT.. | Jason Asselin

I thought it would be a simple passing, but I thought wrong. Of course my arch enemy would get into my shots as they swapped a few cars near Breitung Ave in East Kingsford, MI today. I think the ending is worth it. A little history about ELS 502 shows it was built for the (UP) Union Pacific Railroad Company in January 1980 as UP 3693 before going to the (SLRG) San Luis and Rio Grande Railroad after 2000. Before the Escanaba & Lake Superior Railroad bought it, they were leasing it from the Independent Locomotive Service (ILSX).

    The Railroads are the only transportation system that has to maintain all of it's own right of way and track. The roads are maintained by the government and the River traffic is maintained by the Government through the lock and Dam System. When I worked for the ICG back in the 70s it was not uncommon to see track from the late 1800s being used on remote sidings. As all of the industries have moved overseas a lot of the rail system has been abandoned and taken up. The industries that they used to serve is no longer there!

  • @michaelmartinez1345

    @Delbert Reno , yes that track was very bad... Not all of the industries have moved overseas from the Continental U.S. , but the ones that have, made it tough to compete for the remaining industries here in the U.S. , and things like this become the end result... There are other forms of transportation that are privately owned... Gas pipelines, electrical wires and equipment. Yes, they are considered as being a form of transportation, and they are under the jurisdiction of the DOT and NTSB...

    That track looks normal. The outfit I used to work for, the track gang would take a few ties out, turn them over and respite the rails. One time I watched them stick wooden plugs in the spike holes and hammer the spikes back in. One guy told me that the ties had been flipped over 3 times already, and since they didn’t have any new ties, this is what they did. We used to have 3 derailments in an 8 hour shift.( could be 4 cars for one derailment) The company laid off all the track gang, and brought in outside contractors. They laid 2 miles of track with new ballast, rails and ties. I was there when conrail came in with the first train. As soon as the locomotive cleared the switch, it derailed. They blocked it back on, put gauge rod and respiked the rail. As soon as the locomotive cleared the respiked spot, it derailed again. Now the contractor took the gauge rod down the track. Every place he put it, it fell! Unreal!

    Jason , no ballast , rotten ties , crappy spikes with loose joint bolts , it will get better after they fix all 4 ... The CNW had alittle poem in 1980 when I joined the engineering dept. At the start of my railroading career ; TRACKMAN'S LAMENT It's not my place to run the train , the whistle I can't blow. It's not my place to say how far the trains allowed to go. It's not my place to shoot off steam nor even clang the bell. But let the dam thing jump the track and see who catches hell.... Barry 🙂

    There's got to be three inches of daylight underneath that rail when it hops up. It's not a question of if, but when. If you could somehow position a trail camera on that joint without having it stolen, I could pretty much guarantee that you'd end up with a substantial money shot and payday.

    NEW SUBCRIBER: Took my first stream train ride out of Durand, Michigan. Durand was the center of all railroading in Michigan. My most exciting railroad trip was out of Detroit on August 23, 1967, headed to Cleveland and then Fort Knox, Kentucky. We picked up new recruits in Cleveland. These dudes were drinking adult beverages. No supervision. Like myself, these dudes had just been sworn into the Army. On the way through Kentucky, these dudes were hanging outside the train car in front of me to my right. I'm not sure how the doors worked. We got to a tunnel and boom. I pulled the emergency cord and the train finally came to stop. We backed up on the tracks and I was looking out the window. The train was on a curve and I could see the dudes lifeless body between the tracks in front of the tunnel. Always wondered if the dude got a military funeral. We waited for the ambulance. I could look down on the road from the cliff as we were on the tracks. After the ambulance picked the body up, we left for Fort Knox. I got to see a lot more death in Vietnam. Screw the government people! Eaglegards... From TEXAS

    I'm a retired train driver and without doubt this'd be the worst track in history, I wouldn't even let Thomas the Tank Engine ride over it!! Some of the track jumping up and down are not even bolted to the sleepers, they say maximum speed not to exceed 30-35 mph, even 5 mph would be too high on these appalling rails!!

  • @NJPurling

    @NJPurling

    3 жыл бұрын

    'Thomas the Tank Engine' was actually an English Hudswell-Clarke 0-6-0-T made for a Beet Sugar mill in England. Industrial railways often had track like this and it never mattered as the trains were not more than a fast walk in speed. These tracks look worn-out. If the ties were good the rails could be lifted and packed where they sink at the joints. This lot needs re-laying & i'm guessing the E&LS just leases the line. Nobody gives a **** as the traffic level doesn't justify major attention to the track. They would have to take notice if 502 ended up on the ground or on it's side. especially iff the mess was in the middle of town where everyone could see.

    Anyone can film anything at any time if said filming is done from public property. If you are on the railroads right of way then you are trespassing and the railroad can and will take action to protect themselves from "you" getting hurt on their property. Over the years different railroads had very different attitudes toward railfans. The MILW once welcomed fans, until one published a photo in a railfan magazine showing one of MILW home build passenger cars being intentionally burnt in a test-fire. In its short life, the WC was wide open to railfans to the point that the SW1 used as a shop switcher at Shops was named to honor the railfan photographer who spent much of his time on site after he passed. www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=3972706 Since 2001-09-11, the attitude of all transportation facilities is if you don't work here, stay away...

    Nice! Greetings from Statesville North Carolina, I’m here for work. I think that they’re waiting for summer so that rail heats up, expands and will be good as new! Strange that the rest of the main seems in relatively good shape. Anyhow have a great day in the youuuuu peeeeee, they’re predicting snow in Chicago on Wednesday. Great videos and thanks for getting out there!!

    That track is in rough shape but it's obviously passes FRA standards for a sort line. That train will not run over 10mph. This is how lots of short lines operate. Maintenance budgets are low and the cost to rebuild track is astronomical. So they do the minimum to keep trains upright and the track to class 1 standard which is 10mph

    @@njjeff201 Certified? Lol, I'm talking about the mid 70s. We weren't "supposed" to go into structure fires but we did when needed. We had one training a month at our fire station. Times have changed a lot: I almost always rode on the tailboard of one of our 2 trucks. We didn't have hand held radios or the Jaws Of Life. Nobody was paid and our house siren sounded for every run. ( That was turned off around 94) . We had a beer machine in the fire house. For structure fires it was common to call a local water hauler when needed. One time we had a grass fire and a car fire at the same time and only one person was old enough to drive a fire truck since he had just turned 18 and the other 3 of us took brooms and 5 gallon Indian water packs to the grass fire. You had to be at least 18 to drive the trucks. One time we had a fire run and it was just a driver, me and Smoke Fagin, a really old guy with a fake leg. Smoke Fagin and I were on the tailboard and when we pulled out of the station, Smoke Fagins leg fell off. About 1976 or so when that happened.

    That's the thing; if they make money, it's not enough profit to put back into the infrastructure (everyone's favorite word these days!). That's the story of many United States small, class III railroads. And unless a BNSF or Norfolk Southern or Canadian National sees a need to buy this line and incorporate it into their system, this line will remain as-is until the day it just goes away. Those railroad ties Jason filmed in the beginning got me wondering if they are even using old scrap ties to replace the older, crappier ties already underneath the rails. With this penny pinching outfit, it would not surprise me if they did.
