A Tour of Manchester's Southern Cemetery - PART 1

Famous graves in Manchester's Southern Cemetery.
There is so much history crammed into Manchester's famous Southern Cemetery (literally) but its so big that its difficult to find. In this series I'll be pointing out some of the famous people buried there and the impact they made on the wider world.
First we have John Alcock, one of the first men to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. A daredevil pilot who pioneered air travel at a time when it was still incredibly perilous to do so. Alcock was born in Manchester and buried here after dying in tragic circumstances shortly after his historic trans-Atlantic flight from Canada to Ireland.
Then we look at the grave of John Henry Davies, the brewer who bought a struggling football club called Newton Heath, saving them from bankruptcy. Famously, that club would go on to become the most successful English club of all time, arguably the biggest on the planet - Manchester United.
Finally we turn to the grave of John Adamson, the man who drove the construction of the Manchester Ship Canal, the greatest engineering project of late-Victorian Britain.

One or two of my lot in there though the family lines are originally from Lincolnshire, Newcastle and Northumberland. One branch of the Lincs family moved to Manchester in the late 1700's and by the mid 1800's were also in Liverpool. Although descendants of a surgeon/chemist many turned towards engineering and one of the Liverpool based chaps helped to design and build the earliest rotary printing press.
