A Tool with No Blood on It

The weirdest swerve when it comes to vavilovian mimics is that some weeds got so good at imitating crops that they made their seeds really big an nutritious and BECAME CROPS. Both rye and oats were once weeds in wheat fields, but they got so good at mimicking wheat that THEY BECAME STAPLE CROPS.
Anyway, the bigger the solution, the more problems it causes, but that doesn't mean life was better before it. It used to be that we could rumble through life without understanding the damage that we did. In part, that was because there were fewer of us, in part it was just ignorance. But the only reason there are more of us now is that people wanted to live...and have their children live, which I can't really blame them for.

Considering the centrality of agriculture (and the rodent problem the solution that is agriculture created) to the domestication of cats, I think that a cat name is a perfectly relevant ending to this video. We solved the rodent problem by taming African wildcats, and several thousand years later, Orin has solved the problem of what to name its teeny adorable descendant.

"A tool with no blood on it." This reminded me of a moment from the Ghibli film The Wind Rises, during a dream sequence Jiro Horikoshi talks with Giovanni Caproni about wanting to build beautiful airplanes but that they both know their creations are "destined to become tools for slaughter" Caproni then asks Jiro a crucial question, "Do you want a world with pyramids or without?" Caproni chooses pyramids knowing the many people who died to make them, to him the act of creation is worth the price. There has never been a tool that doesn't have blood on it either from it's moment of creation or from the misuse of the tool down the line. I have no idea why I'm writing this.

I'm glad you wrote it! One of the Wright brothers lived long enough to see the devastation of aerial bombardment in war. Though I can't quote him directly, he never anticipated their work on flight to lead to that. Of course he didn't love being linked to that level of destruction, but he did not regret the work he and his brother did and still felt they had done more good that harm. I think that's the most we can hope for really. We can't do no harm, but maybe we can do slightly less harm, or different harm, and bring a little more good into the world than the bad

I wouldn't call it desperation. I'd call it inevitability. Takes the human sentiment of fear out of it, and somehow makes natural selection feel all the more unyielding. Nature doesn't abhor a vacuum. Nature abhors disequilibrium. There's a difference. There's this amazing view of energy from author Terrence Deacon that turns just about everything you've learned in High School physics class on its head: "any differences that tend to eliminate themselves can said to be be a source of energy". This was pulled from a section on the second law, but the evolution of false flax into a field of monoculture feels just as apt a description of energy and entropy as the mixing of a spot of milk into tea.

Really since it is edible I'm not sure why they were so picky with trying to get rid of it... it sounds like it might be a improvement, at least for food or oil based applications of flax. John's Ted talk on Paper Towns (the concept of, not specifically the story of the book) is an incredible perspective on learning how to learn that I wish I had when I was in middle school or high school. The question is are we living a life that is worth the harm?" Life sometimes looks like an endless flow of trolley problems where we're not always allowed to see who's tied to the tracks until we've made our choices, and we just have to do our best with that

I have been feeling so helpless these past few days. I just got out of a bout of deep depression, and spent a lot of time thinking and cleaning up the messes that caused in terms of missed assignments and exams and all that. Now I'm back at the point where I can fix myself and do my work, or I can fall right back into that depression, and I feel like I'm peering right over the edge. Whenever it comes to better myself, I always resort to "self-help," planning, and trying to become the "perfect" version of myself overnight. Of course that's impossible, and we need to strive to just be better versions of ourselves today than we were yesterday. I know this, but when you applied this concept to the entire "human experiment," I felt so stupid and happy at the same time. Here I am trying to do something that not even us as a species on a whole can do. Together we can accomplish so much, but even then we can't be "perfect," and the thought of that is relaxing, because I don't need to try to be perfect. I just need to be better.

The reason problems arise from solutions is because in many cases we fail to recognize the systemic nature of the problems. Things are interconnected and interdependent and therefore you cannot just chose one problem and try to fix it on its own (you just end up getting different problems). Fritjof Capra's video called "The Heart of the Matter" really shifted by understanding of things and I'm currently taking his course called the Capra Course. Fantastic physicist, ecologist, and systems theorist talking about how we can tackle the many global problems we face by adopting a systemic perspective.

I think one of the other issues (related to the problems that the internet has caused) is that people are misusing their understanding of science, or lack thereof, to claims scientific solutions are themselves problems. And, yes, that's obviously in part in reference to the whole vaccination kerfuffle we find ourselves in, but also in regards to things like biotechnology and bioremediation, two amazing solutions to agricultural problems and climate change problems. But both of which are also things that have been fearmongered about by anti-science groups across the political spectrum to claim that they are actually problems thanks to made up anti-science statements about them.
