Thanks for the tip LorriMarie,it came right in time ! I startet my first altered book with one who haven't any personal value for anyone, so I can make some trial and error on my way . I love the altered book series, it is a big help for me ! I want to make somthing lasting for my friend because the books she gave me are the cook books from her great grandmother and I will start on that when I have some experience.

LorriMarie. Thank you so much for this vid. I started a book but did it all wrong thankfully I only did a 2 page spread so it wasn’t the entire book. I now have a larger book started like this one and am now ready to get to altering. Thanks for alllllllllllll of your vids I did not know I needed an altered book in my life but am looking forwarded to trying all your techniques with my shabby chic style. Thanks again. This explains why my altered book is falling to pieces. I'll use the remaining pages for underpants, tags and other ephemera and start a new book when I've completed my current project - a midori style art journal from a gutted book about Venice (my first attempt at an art journal). So many lovely pictures to choose from! Hopefully it will not look too amateurish as I have little to no training in art and design. See you on the table!

good morning jillian...such a good question...gesso...for me...does a couple of things....i like the matte finish of gesso vs. the shiny look of white acrylic paint (most of the time)...the gesso is meant to give the substrate a 'bite' so other mediums will grab better....and i use gesso to 'calm down' the background...or blend things in a bit better....i buy it by the bucket but i have seen recipes to DIY....did i answer your question?

I see some of your readers on here have books that sound like they are too damaged/weak and what to do with them. I have that issue as well or pages seem to thin and really bumpy when glued down. Save it all gang! You can use pages for something else later on or reinforce the books bindings. My problem is I just found a fantastic ancient, really bad shape book I want to repurpose, and it's barely hanging in there. Beautiful illustrations and its from 1900! My hubby thinks I will destroy it if I start taking out the pages. It really is the most unique book I have ever seen since starting the altered book journey. But if I leave it as is, it will crumble apart and soon. Any suggestions? I love this and want to give it life again! Any ideas from you or your "students" is much appreciated!

I would think a couple pages per signature...perhaps my signature have more pages than what you are working with. For 20% of the book; that would be 1 sheet/4 numbered pages, for each 5 sheets/or 20 numbered pages. My signatures are 10 sheets; remove center two, leaves 8 sheets to pair up...4 glued pairs to right, and 4 to left of the center stitching. I wonder if it would be better to remove one more, so the first page can be paired/glued to the last page of previous signature. With glue, paint, underpants, and extras it will still be a fat book. Food for thought, if your book is set up the same. .

Another great tip! I must say though that it's getting harder and harder to find books with sewn in signatures- even in the thrift stores, most of what I'm finding are more recently published titles with glued in signatures. It took me an hour to find just one sewn book. Do you have any tips on where to find them, titles/types to look for? That might make a good subject for an episode, come to think of it. I have to say that I just love all of your videos, but especially the altered book ones. Don't be afraid to make them as long as you need to- I think most people are like me, we just pause them, go answer the phone, cook dinner, walk the dog, etc., and come right back to you. We're def having fun!

Hi Katherine, I find a lot of my altered books that are sewn together, at antique malls. Look thru them and check prices. I have found them for 2 dollars on up. Sad to hear newer ones are mostly glued in. I know books break down so much faster that way...sigh. Good luck!

thank you katherine for the supportive comment! do you have a local library that has book sales? that is where i pick up most of mine....yikes....it is time to start hoarding books with sewn signatures??? thank you also for letting me know that the videos are not too long (sometimes)...lol...i publish one mixed media tutorial and one altered book tutorial per week....or at least that is my intention....lol.....glad you are enjoying them....go create, go play, go have fun!

Good ideas! I remove more than 20% though, otherwise it seems to get too fat when I add every thing I want to in it.
