A Thousand Years of Wine and a Medieval Toilet: Chateau Tour 2

Today we visit Chateau de Rosieres' 600 year old toilet, that has been used as a wine cellar for at least 150 years. We'll also introduce you to our plans for making wine on the estate, which has been growing vines since at least the 9th Century.
NOTE: There was an Amy Technology Malfunction uploading this and some of the music got deleted. We are in the process of post-adding it but it won't be brilliant and won't come up for a few hours. Sorry!
A note on the 10 Minute Chateau Tours:
We’ve been getting a lot of requests for tours of the château, so alongside our regular episodes we will be bringing you a series called ‘10 Minute Château Tours’ - bitesize introductions to the more than 60 rooms, ten buildings and 130 acre estate. We'll take you on a journey through the château’s 800 year history, including the lives of the people who lived here. Woven into the fabric of the château are stories of love, war, murder, jealousy, adventure, survival and even canabilism, and we're always unearthing new finds.
We’ll also introduce you to our ambitious plans for renovating Rosières and returning it to a living, working estate and family home.
Many of the chateau tours will be followed by a blog on our website, so visit www.chateaurosieres.com and subscribe to our newsletter if you want to read more.
Our normal videos will continue alongside this series so don’t worry if you’re missing our amazing jokes (!) and exceptional DIY skills (!!)
****
A little note of vague seriousness... we really enjoy making these vlogs, but we don't do it only for pleasure. Returning this massive, medieval château and estate to its former glory, and doing it in an historically sensitive way, will take a lot of money. We have a business plan and we believe that we can make it work, but the recent global situation put a big dent in that. Our entire opening season, which we had worked so hard to set up, was wiped out. We therefore hope that we can replace some of this income with revenue from our KZread vlogs. Each video takes between 15-40 hours to film and edit (mostly due to Amy’s fatal combination of perfectionism and a lack of technical skill) which obviously takes time away from other work. We therefore need it to become a reasonable source of income if we are to justify continuing with it. So IF you enjoy our videos and IF you have the means, we would be really grateful for a small donation to help us continue. We’re taking donations through www.buymeacoffee.com/chateaur... which is the online version of giving somebody a tip (not an actual coffee). You can pay through Paypal or Stripe so it's very secure. However (and we can’t stress this enough) if a financial contribution would stretch you and your family in ANY way, please do not feel that it is necessary. There are many ways in which you can help us - sharing, recommending and commenting on our videos is of immense value, from both a solidarity and a practical perspective, and we welcome absolutely everybody into the Rosières community, regardless of resources.

It's why we're slower getting the videos out. But I hope that it means they're a durable and enjoyable record of our journey. Thanks again! Amy, Marc and Clement.

Watched this and it reminded me of the finger lakes winery's of Western New York. French Europeans brought grapevines with them when they migrated to tbe USA. During the 1800s the Taylor family of wine grape growers grafted 1000s of grapevines to send back to france due to loss of grapevines in Europe "France". The wine grapes are still grown there today. Though the Taylor family sold their name sake to Coca Cola the grapes are still grown there under the name of Bully Hill wineries. Best wishes.

Another really interesting and entertaining video from you guys. Who knew you can study winemaking at University!! My daughter has now decided that's the future for her :). What a coincidence that you guys ended up there with Marc familiy's background. Looking forward to seeing more to do with this.

Hi from South Australia! Loved this video and Marc’s delight with the medieval toilet made me grin! Just a thought! I’m sure Marc is aware that Australia’s vineyards were not attacked by the grape phylloxera insect. He may be able to source early European grape varieties here in Australia for your planned vineyards. Also perhaps an excuse for an Aussie wine tour?🤔😁🥂

It's great to see around the chateau. And I love it when one of you is talking and a little comment comes up haha. This will give us a strong sense of the layout. I love the history. I long for really old things, because I live in America 🇺🇸. Can't wait for the next video, Jackie Oklahoma USA 🇺🇸💖

Phylloxera is an insect borne fungus. Phylloxera was imported to France, and much of the world, from the United States circa 1860. I think you imported it as penance for the UK giving the US field bindweed. My garden, and accursed bindweed, awaits.

I enjoyed learning about the history of the winemaking at Chateau de Rosieres. Now Marc - about your edited response about the insect - "not a virus, you fool" that blighted the vineyards. I noticed there was a punctuation error in that response. The period that goes at the end of the sentence was missing, but you should get a B+ grade for the correct use of quote marks:) Keep trying with the English language!

‘Twas Amy who edited the video and added the quote! When it’s a standalone quote as a title card they don’t need periods interestingly!
