About A Theology of Biblical Counseling Video Lectures:
For over four decades, biblical theology has been at the core of the biblical counseling movement. Leaders in biblical counseling have emphasized a commitment to teaching doctrine in their counseling courses out of the conviction that good theology leads to good counseling and bad theology leads to bad counseling.
In A Theology of Biblical Counseling Video Lectures, Heath Lambert unpacks the core convictions that underlie sound counseling and gives practical wisdom for our counseling practices today. Together with the accompanying book, A Theology of Biblical Counseling, these lectures show how biblical counseling is rooted in the Scriptures while illustrating the real challenges counselors face today.
A Theology of Biblical Counseling Video Lectures is accessible for working biblical counselors and for counselors-in-training at colleges and seminaries. In each lesson, doctrine comes to life in real ministry to real people, dramatically demonstrating how theology intersects with the lives of actual counselees.

This is very good. I am a sophomore at Liberty University for my degree in Christian Counseling and psychology. I am one to have a balance between both secular psychology and Christian psychology, but ever since I began my studies at LU, I have been leaning more to Biblical counseling. I believe my desire to counsel is part of my calling. I began to weigh both of these and I felt led to follow the Holyspirit’s leading and of course the word of God. The solutions to our problems is all in the word of God. The Bible speaks of it. How can someone be a Christian counselor and not be biblical?. God have blessed me with creativity, grace and wisdom to help people in away that is still according to his word but sounding like it harsh doctrine. The truth is the truth. And we are all accountable. These videos have helped me in my decision on which path I’m going to counsel. And I am sticking with biblical counseling with a touch of regular psychology. Thank you for these videos.... Gby!

I really enjoyed this whole video, the insight was in-depth and eloquently stated. The best takeaway that I got from these lectures where that Dr. Heath Lambert gave a compelling argument as we why we, as Biblical Counselors, should understand and respect some aspects of psychology in order to best help those that are seeking help. Over the past few years as I have developed interest in pursuing Biblical Counseling, I have vacillated back and forth about this very thing. I still align with the Biblical Counselor camp when it comes to treatment, but I can completely get on board with idea to understand studies of “real science” done in the Psychology world. However, I will always state that God’s Word is the authority and should be treated as such when treating counselees and if there is anything is Psychology that we come across that is contrary to what the Bible says, then we should be prepared to leave it out. Thank you, Dr. Heath Lambert and God bless!

The way theology is defined toward the authority and sufficiency of the Word of God amazed me. Biblical Counselors believe and will live up the Word as their tools and resources (besides prayer and the church-body) to conduct counseling. Knowing that the word is sufficient to address all aspects in life motivates us to go deeper and prayerfully to God's word to understand how it will influence our vision of life, which will effect the truth that we will pass on and explain to the counselees. With this truth we are more than motivated to stand on Christ, the solid rock, the Word made flesh. Amen.

@@anthonymartinez8871 one of the first books I read on Christian counseling. I liked it but he seems to reference Jay Adams a lot, he’s a pioneer on biblical counseling. One thing I found was interesting was that there’s a difference between Christian counseling and biblical counseling...the former doesn’t use the Bible as the main authority by also using other tactics, which I can agree with to an extent, but says it’s limited in today’s scope on things, which I disagree. This book is Def a good help for beginners but I would say check Jay Adams as well! Go to Amazon and start there.

I really liked this. Heath does well walking a fine line here. Im even considering a biblical counseling degree. At the same time, the resentment or jealousy toward "secular counseling" that I've seen when talking to biblical counselors should be addressed. What does Athens have to do with Jerusalem? As much as Natural Revelation has to do with Special Revelation. The two do not need to compete. Per the example using the secular three-column method, more credit should be given to secular methods like this that work. It can't only be explained away as the secular counselor somehow using a biblical teaching without knowing it. No, Burns is not clearly "repeating an insight given from God." The Bible doesn't tell us to create three columns and list our thoughts in such a structured manner. The method draws on creative insight from whoever invented the method. Rather than being defensive that Burns method was effective. We could learn from Burns, see that it is consistent with scripture and 'make it even better' with biblical insights. I don't understand the strong resistance to giving Burns some.

One final note, to say that Christian Counselors believe the bible is not sufficient for counseling is a dangerous strawman fallacy. It's obviously uncharitable in that Christian Counselors would never define themselves as "Counselors who believe the bible isn't sufficient." That lack of charity is why Biblical counseling gets a bad reputation.

  • @ttimetotroll

Thanks for introducing me to the term Nouthetic Counseling. Had to search that up. But it really sounded that Nouthetic Counseling and Heath's Biblical Counseling are both quite similar, that the bible should be the sole source of counseling. I'm a new psych (Christian) student so I am trying to determine if I should go for biblical or christian counseling. Back to your comment, counseling in a sense does sound like private preaching, if the bible the only resource used. For the bible does teach that sin is a major prerequisite for mental disorders. And although I agree that preacher ought to be well informed of biblical teachings and ought to be close to God, I disagree that they have to be licensed. For the achievement of being licensed does not mean that they know biblical teachings or is close to God. It just indicates that they have the time, money, and effort put in, to pass a standard that is set by a college. Though a credential is better than none, we must not disregard those who are great preachers and close to God but did not go to school. I mention this for the apostle Paul, like many Pharisees, hated Jesus and Jesus' message, but only when Paul was saved by God did he transform in mind and spirit and became faithful.

I would say it’ll be a gradual process and you as the counselor would need to do lots of work in prayer and waiting....Doing your part as led by the Holy Spirit and letting the Holy Spirit do his job of change and conviction. Come to think of it, An atheist in the first place will not even in his or her wildest dream come to a Christian counselor. So if he or she did come to you, God is probably up to something. Don’t force it. Let the Holy Spirit be in charge. Btw @Ama Volta Are you Ghanaian?

I have currently been thinking about getting my counseling degree. I agree with a lot said in this, God is the only way a person can truly be fulfilled and satisfied. However, using this line of rationale if somebody has a headache or a broken leg they should go to the Bible for their answers which isn’t necessarily true. Any advice on this? Am I saying something wrong? I see taking God’s biblical principles of psychology and teaching them to others to help them live more fulfilled lives can be an apologetic to show that God’s ways work. Am I missing anything? Anybody have any thoughts on this? Blessings!

I would refer to 29:04, where he states that not all problems are counseling problems. In this case, a broken leg or a headache can be identified as a medical problem and therefore should be resolved a medical expert. Though I think the bottom line for the believer in Christ is that God has revealed how to navigate this life through His living Word. We ought to live our lives by His Word and consult Him in prayer for understanding /help on how to apply His Word to our lives. Hope that helps.

To say that counseling is purely theological, hence it should not subscribe to meaningful secular ideas, is like saying morality is theological and therefore, our secular subscription of it -- our laws and the constitution -- is unnecessary (because the bible is enough).

The Bible is enough. Where do you think society's laws come from? Where do you think Western Civilization's laws came from? Read the Ten Commandments. Societies that have thrived such as America, have been built on God's law.

My question is where did the laws and the concept of the constitution come from? Man's quest for meaning is found in creator creature relationship. The creator is entitled to tell his creation how to live in a world he created. Dr. Lambert is not saying secular concepts are invalid, but they must be filtered in counseling through the lenses of the Bible because it is the authority on matters of conscience and life. Morality, the concept of right and wrong has a basis. There are no authorities in place that have not been sanctioned by the creator. If your worldview is not Biblical, I can see how someone can come to this conclusion.

I agree that Christian counselors tend to be expensive which I believe is wrong because at the end of the day it's still God's word being utilized to provide that counsel and Gods word should never be charged for since he already paid for it.
