Yeah, I know, this topic sucks, but if you want better topics you're going to have to suggest them... here... in our suggestion bin: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfUdlvw6YgU44J8AnM2U_ZvRMyvh_CUM51LYSqF5nYJB9d1-w/viewform?usp=sf_link We'll even send you a free t-shirt if we use your suggestion (but it takes forever to ship them out so don't get too excited)

There was another promotion like this in the UK about 15 years ago. This was "book a cruise for £10" promoted by the Daily Express newspaper.Of course the real price of this cruise would have been several hundred pounds, but the thinking behind this promotion was that the person taking up this offer would also book a second cruise for a partner. This would be at full price and the travel company should have made a small profit. Unfortunately many people just booked the £10 cruise with no second ticket. The travel company went bankrupt and the newspaper had to compensate over 2.500 readers

Something very similar to this actually happened again in Italy in April 2019. The electronics company "Unieuro" gave out a free flight to anywhere in Europe as long as you spent more than 300 euros. At first it seemed to work, but around Easter they just stopped paying for the flights just day before they departed, which forced many people to pay thousands of euros on flights because it was holiday season.

So if there’s one thing I’ve learned being in a corporate job for 15 years, it’s that while the executives often do stupid things, they aren’t actually stupid and are acting rationally based on some dumb rules and/or incentives. I would love to know what the real reasons were that the Hoover execs made such stupid decisions.

Hah. I remember that. It wasn't like everybody didn't know what was going on and, yes, Hoover DID double down. I remember their PR people being interviewed on national TV and radio and absolutely INSISTING that the whole scheme was under control and would work out well for everybody. 'Hoover' is absolutely embedded in Brit culture as both the verb 'to vacuum' and as the noun for a vacuum cleaner. Even people who know nothing about the company, my kids for example, use the term. If you're really old, like me, you may also remember a time when no home had a washing machine and the laundromat devices were made by the (US) Bendix company. For years 'Bendix' meant any kind of washing machine.

It's funny because Americans are usually the ones that like to call products based off their brand names. They say Kleenex instead of tissues, Jell-O instead of jelly, Jacuzzi instead of hot tubs, ChapStick instead of lip balm, Queue Tips instead of cotton buds, Rollerblades instead of inline skates, Band-Aids instead of plasters and loads of others. Only ones I'm aware of in the UK are hoovers and sellotape (and Tipp-Ex but that's such a niche rare word.) Oh and Sellotape has a brand name equivalent used there too, Scotch tape, used in the same way. So hoovers are really the only ones I can think of that are unique.
