A Tense Finale To An Incredible Day In Hell! | Paris-Roubaix Femmes Avec Zwift 2023 Highlights
Спорт
Bienvenue en enfer, welcome to hell. Paris-Roubaix weekend kicks off with the third edition of the women's race, a brutal 145.5km route between Denain and Roubaix, with a bone-rattling 17 sectors of the toughest cobbles in bike racing. After Lizzie Deignan took the victory in 2021, followed by her teammate Elisa Longo Borghini in 2022, who will be crowned this year's queen of the cobbles?

Jackson was the most significant rider in that front group in terms of keeping them away from the chasers, her attack around 22km to go was the first of her many efforts that allowed them to contest the victory. It's rare that the most deserving rider actually wins it, so pumped for her!

You could see her trying to get others to take turns at the front, and it worked. It was great to see her win.

Totally! She, together with Lach and Borras. If anything, Ragusa was sitting on everyone's wheel saving her legs for the finish, most likely. If it wasn't for the first three, they would have been swept by Kopecky & co. So glad a hard working cyclist outsprinted someone who was saving energy instead of working to keep the podium.

I had tears of joy when she crossed the line, and even on repeat viewings, I still do. What a race. So proud of Alison.

Seeing how hard she worked, I was rooting for Jackson but doubtful she'd get the W with the likes of Ragusa sitting in for so long. The win couldn't have gone to a more worthy competitor. What a strong finish! What an amazing race.
Alberta Canada proud! Great race!
Wow!! One of the biggest results in Canadian cycling history!! Bauer. Stieda. Hesjedal. And now Jackson. 🇨🇦🍁❤

What a sprint! Thanks Alison, huge congrats. Oh Canada! 🇨🇦 🍁 🇨🇦

That crash at 2:45min is brutal. Unbelievable how quick they get up again. Puzzles me every single time!
@Pupda

The cobblestones are the worst - on asphalt you at least slide (painfully) a little and that helps dissipate some of the energy; with the cobbles you tend to "dig in" and come essentially to a dead stop. All the energy & momentum is dissipated instantly. As brutal as this crash was, I still think that the crashes (and the race in general) in 2021 were a lot worse - in many of the crashes you can see heads bouncing off the cobbles ( kzread.info/dash/bejne/m6N90dGEpdrIm5s.html ), and this was also the race where Van Vleutan broke her pelvis. Although if we're being honest, Van Vleutan pretty much breaks something every year....
What a big day for Jackson. And I cannot forget about Marta Lach, great race, plenty of power put into getting in to velodrome!❤
I don't know how it came out on the Eurosport/GCN feed (but I have a fairly good idea) but watching the French feed, you could hear Marion Rousse chuckle when you heard the scream "WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU DO? YOU FUCKING DID IT!" Just hearing that unfiltered was the greatest thing ever - pure unadulterated emotion - and top marks for the dancing too. I know I wouldn't have had the legs for it after that. Have to feel sorry for Femke Markus - to be that close and have a crash in the velodrome - I can understand slapping the bike in frustration there at the end.

Markus had great position too. Probably not too experienced on a velodrome, that was a weird crash.
Congratulations from Alberta Alison!
Awesome win for Jackson and Canada (particularly after Bauer was denied by like 1mm)... well done.
Well done ladies, outstanding efforts from all of you!
Top win - most belief in the break, strongest legs and massive last lap effort. Doing PRBX history proud.
Congratulations, Jackson! Great sprint.
Well deserved win for Jackson. She worked hard in the breakaway. Gutted for Femke Markus, falling when you've possibly got the best sprint.

Helluva a sprint to win it, helluva a race overall. Nice work Alison! (Almost makes up for Steve Bauer's agonizingly close loss in 1990.)

It's interesting how the cobbles beat everyone up so much that at the end everyone's in survival mode and it's hard for anyone to go faster than the rest. This breakaway would never have survived if the race were on asphalt.
As a Canadian, this was my finest day as a cycling fan. The greatest single day performance by a Canadian in professional cycling. So happy for AJ.

She was in a pretty unknown team I think, might have just been looking for a top 10 result to get a better team next year?
@Tibovl
Жыл бұрын
I think she just sacked her chances for a top 10 place. Which is understandable. Most of these riders would have signed for a top 10 place instantly if you asked them before the race. Do you really throw that away for a chance at a medal?
@dpricketti
Жыл бұрын
no these ideas are too calculating and not based in reality. Her team is not that unknown. think there was some agreement made and prhaps she drew the short straw or she knew she had a not so wonderful sprint, one of the others was a good friend and she worked for her
@tasujturlaj5272
Жыл бұрын
She said that she was aiming for top 10, not around top 40 - that's why worked hard to keep breakaway going. In fact - that's best result for Polish rider (men and women) in history, so she's very happy being 6th.
@dpricketti
Жыл бұрын
Perhaps so. But it was in the interest of the whole group to stay away. Just have trouble thinking that she decided on her own to sacrifice herself for the rest of the group instead of hoping for a podium place which what usually happens.
I believe Silicon Valley Bank no longer exists. How does that affect the finances of EF Education-Tibco-SVB?

...and why am I thinking about Chiara Doni?
Q: are all riders sponsored by SVB getting financial bail-outs?
@matthewbaynham6286

Who was sponsored by SVB? I can't imagine SVB would have sponsored European womens cycling, it was an american bank that was targetted at american startups. Not many americans watch European womens cycling.
@AndrewDHDavidson

@matthewbaynham6286 The winning team is, EF-Education-Tibco-SVB, it's on their kit in several places pretty clearly, and the video narrator says it a couple times. They're an American squad.
@daveanderson7304
Жыл бұрын
Firstly, congratulations to all of the cyclists in today's Paris-Roubaix Femmes! That is a tough ride, and there were no bailouts for anyone in today's race. Secondly, the SVB sponsored team had bank regulators in chase vehicles coming after their kit, so they had extra motivation to keep going.
waiting for the men's !
Silicon Valley bank, is this a joke? Don’t read out their sponsor name in the future Marty.
I have a tech question for #GCNTECH This race doesn't have any major climbs so the weight of the bike is not that important, so why not use tires that are unconventional with no air and just impossible to puncture? They are heavier but when there are no climbs that is not important.
@alanrutherford93
Жыл бұрын
My thoughts: acceleration is affected by tire weight, and winning this race comes down to the sprint finish in the velodrome. No one would want to give up the advantage at the finish.
@matthewbaynham6286
Жыл бұрын
@@alanrutherford93 Marianne Vos had a puncture and wasn't at that sprint finish, she might have had a better result without the puncture and heavier tires.
@alanrutherford93
Жыл бұрын
@@matthewbaynham6286 fair point. Every choice has costs and benefits. There aren’t that many flats in Paris Roubaix. There’s no way to win a sprint with heavier tires. I still think teams prioritizing winning over puncture resistance.
To many riders at the end. They must add more kms next year. I enjoyed this great race anyway
@bobroberts5820
Жыл бұрын
I think it was largely how it was raced with a break up the road. They had to consistently chase, couldn't afford to try a solo, needed all the riders possible working More km's this year than the two previous editions where a solo rider won.
@Tibovl
Жыл бұрын
I agree. Women's cycling has taken massive leaps the last few years and some races should become longer.
@killoe11
Жыл бұрын
@@bobroberts5820 the previous two editions where solo win, agree. But 2021 was so muddy and slipery and 2022 was a solo win folowed by 7 riders. I enjoyed the 3 editions, specially this last one, but it would be more epic with some more kms. No doubt these women can do it and would give us a huge and epic race.
@JosephRiches
Жыл бұрын
Watching the race live all the women were freewheeling as much as they could before the corners towards the end, especially with how they couldn't catch the break dangling just 8secs up the road at one point, I think they were pretty knackered. I could be wrong ofc though.
@AndrewDHDavidson
Жыл бұрын
It was mentioned several times during the live feed that it was predominantly headwinds today, which makes solo breakaways less likely and big groups more common.
Some of these ladies are thicker and more muscular than many of their men counterparts.
Funny how delusional spectators destroy farmer's crop right next to the road
SVB doesn't deserve the good press. Banking pirates.
Dedicating 6 minutes to an important race doesn't feel like much of a support for women's racing! It's going to look awkward if you give mens coverage more than 6 minutes.

woman's cycling is so weak ! The evidence is in the huge group entering the velodrome. With that many riders contesting the finish..... the course was way too easy. Seven riders contesting the sprint for the victory hardly counts as a huge group. Unlike in the men’s race, the women were riding into a headwind all day. Anyone who knows anything about cycling knows that makes it harder for riders to get away and easier for people riding in a large group. You possibly weren’t watching the race, but the seven leading riders were the remnants of the breakaway, which looked like it would inevitably be caught with 6 or 7km to go, but somehow managed to maintain their advantage.
