A Taste of Honey Q&A. Subscribe: bit.ly/subscribetotheBFI.
To mark the 50th anniversary of Tony Richardson's A Taste of Honey, stars Rita Tushingham and Murray Melvin, and cinematographer Walter Lassally take part in an onstage discussion at BFI Southbank.
The film is notable for its frank treatment of mixed-race relationships, teenage pregnancy and homosexuality. Melvin reflects on his involvement in Shelagh Delaney's original stage version, and his concern that the material would prove too sensational for audiences. Lassally discusses the difficulties Richardson faced in getting the project off the ground. Tushingham talks about being dismissed by early critics as an 'ugly unknown', and reveals that the film originally had Hollywood backers who wanted Audrey Hepburn for the lead role.

Love this film. I’m glad Rita mentioned the other cast members, Dora Bryan who played her mother so brilliantly and the others. Actors who appeared in the stage play include Angela Lansbury, Joan Plowright, Hermione Baddeley, and Frederick Combs who also played Donald so beautifully in Boys in the Band.
I fell in love with Rita when I first saw A Taste of Honey on video in the early 80s.The most beautiful eyes.

A Taste of Honey featured some of the greatest movie acting I've ever seen. It's amazing that this play was written by a 19 year old first time playwright.
Wow it was remarkable to see this movie again. I saw it when I was about 13 years old and now 62 and it was pretty amazing back then watching it in black and white as that's all we had while the old tube TV kept rolling. I had to sneak to watch TV at night when father went to work as we weren't allowed without our father's permission. It was really nice to see the characters who played the lead roles as they have aged quite nicely. It was real nice to see this movie again and I realized it was different than what I remember. I remember being sad for her because her friend didn't come back and she was alone . I don't remember some of the scenes with her mother's boyfriend / husband. Thank you for doing this interview
Melvyn was acting in The Timpsons Shop at the top of Parker St with some young lads a few doors from our house as we came home from school.
Can't describe how much I love this movie!

Murray Melvin is a LOVELY man! I wrote to him about 'Honey' years ago, and I had a lovely kind hand-written letter back from him personally. How great to see him here talking about the film all these years on. Thanks for uploading this.

I would love to write to him but sooo nervous and not sure what to write. That is lovely though, Murray Melvin seems like such a lovely, genuine person.
Such a brilliant and groundbreaking film. Rita is an amazing actor. I’ve met Rita a few times in M & S Brighton where I worked. I tried not to gush. She was so lovely and very happy to speak with me. 💕
I love this film, I love Murray, and I love Rita!
a fantastic film that speaks volumes..I wish more people in the USA knew of this film.. so well acted, tight script and ensemble. the ending saddens me as I so wanted the characters Jo and Geoffrey to stay together...it saddened me that the mother barged in and broke their friendship up.

Same here. One of my favorites films ever. I giggle during the whole movie but the ending is so painful. It would be wonderful if they just stayed together, Geoffrey, Jo and her mother.

And a lovely man.
Murray get your facts right , the play was about Salford not Manchester
Lovely Rita! What an brilliant channel... I am never in the position to reach the BFI London for these events so it is much appreciated.
I absolutely love it when you gather people from these much loved films. However the volume level on this video is incredibly low and I have had problems listening to it. I have opened the file in the editing programme Sony Vegas and can confirm, that the audio has been encoded at a very low level. The very loudest peaks are only about 13db when they should be up to about 3db.
wonderful, saw it when I was young, unforgettable
Walter Lassally is absolutely charming and so well spoken.

an actress and a star and a lady, if I may say so
Salford is a completely different city from Manchester!
Oh, wonderful! Thanks for putting this up!
As a 14-year-old gay boy, I fell in love with both Rita AND Murray in this movie!
Great program! thanks BFIEvents !
A Taste of Honey isn't a film, it is a documentary filmed by invisible crew!
I love this interview...the movie is wonderful.
I played the role of Geoffrey. The audio is so quiet

"Strong women" guff again. Come on. Really? Identity politics would have lasted two minutes in 1950s Salford. Most people in the industrial north west (male or female) were dealing with hard and gritty lives and were hostile to flim flam of any colour. Women were hard, men were hard, and life was hard. Identity politics, don't talk wet.
