A Tale of The Beguines: The 14th Century Order of Women

Beguines were women of diverse backgrounds, called by a higher purpose to live lives of simplicity, contemplation, and poverty. But - they were not nuns, bound by religious vows, but rather a community united by a shared devotion to serving the sick and the helpless.
The story of the Order began with Mary of Oignies, a woman whose unwavering commitment to her community inspired others, sparking the birth of the beguine movement. They were not confined to convent walls but found solace in self-sufficient clusters of individual houses known as beguinages or "God Houses". These humble abodes, often donated, provided them with a place to dwell as they pursued lives of service to their community.
