A Study on the Law and Legalism - Tim Conway

Many people will make the accusation of legalism against those who confront them about their sin. But what exactly is legalism? It is common to have legalism sneak in the door in many churches, make sure your right.

Thank you Tim Conway for being SALT AND LIGHT. God has used you and uses you to answer a lot of my most difficult questions. I am, and I am sure I will be grateful for an eternity that God makes you work for Him. The proof is that I was happy for a whole day after having heard one of your preaches. Is what I have done here writing in public about my appreciation a good thing to do? I am beeing shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves? I can only say that I am being innocent as a dove, but I am not sure about being shrewd as a snake. Maybe I shouldn't even have pubblished this comment because I am hesitating as you say? Holy Spirit what do you want me to do? Let's see! God bless you all!!!!!!

Pastor Tim,I agree..my concern is that alot of emphasis was placed on what we should be doing as opposed to The Spirit doing it THROUGH us!..I know there should be a flow of righteousness in our lives ,but we all SIN everyday still. So we cant depend on our achievements or place our hope in our good works even.Only IN CHRIST can we even be looked at by our KING.IN HIM we are righteous, justified. So most of my conversation is about what HE is doing in me and what HE has done FOR me.God bless

I think your right per 1 Corinthians 5:12. While we are called to be witnesses to those around us, i dont see anywhere that we are called to rebuke those outside the Church, rebuking a fellow believer in love is another thing.

Just one more last thing before my silence. Thank you for glorifying God and for your love all good things that come from God. Maybe that is the answer to my questions here under. I have to be worried about glorifying God and to love more than being shrewed as a snake. Are there priorities in the Christian life? Love is the greatest priority. Is saying I love you lawful? if so I love you!!!! Thank you God.

Tim, If you are not saved you are bound by the law. Jesus is the only way no man gets to the father but through him. You can stop every habitual sin you have but still burn in hell. We have a responsibility to lead people to Christ telling a slave that they are a slave. The only thing that breaks yoke of bondage of sin is the blood of JESUS. I can tell a sinner not to sin but that knowledge does not have the power to break them free of it however the GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST and Him Crucified

@PureGraceEvangelism Before we were saved sin was our master. We lived under its control. In Christ we have moved out from under the dominion of sin. Sin no longer controls us. We are no longer under it’s power or lordship. There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it." 1 Cor. 10:12-13

sisjelaine: I understand what you are talking about in the work place. Followers of Jesus as Lord and Messiah, need not say one word in the world of darkness to bring conviction in the hearts of carnal sinners. The light of the Holy Spirit shines and the darkness cannot abide. Yet, those unregenerate sinners who love the darkness will do anything necessary to put out the light and rid the salt from exposing sin. This happened to me at work. Boss was in wrong relationship with another.

So it would be legalistic to say "Ok since Jesus says that it is adulterous to look at a woman with lust, then we should not look at women" the statement isn't about not looking but instead about having a change of heart that causes you to look and see the way God sees. Would it ever be proper though to purposely not even look at a woman if we are working on being delivered from lust?

  • @gospelcawfeethoughts9925

I think that you can look at a women in a non-adulterous way. However, for me personally, I tend to look at the ground when I’m walking past attractive women to prevent me from looking lustfully. Does that make sense? It would be legalistic to say that you MUST look at the ground when encountering all women or else. Looking at women isn’t a sin. It’s looking at women “lustfully’ that’s a sin.

If you walk in the Spirit you will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh, that's the key for holiness. And we have to grow in that for the rest of our lives here on earth. But it's not something we are not able to do otherwise Jesus would not have said it. But indeed, He wants to stress the point that we all need a Savior to be able to walk in holiness, instead of the self rigtheousness mindset of the Pharisees.

Plain and simple. legalism is adding our works to Gods grace. Romans 11:6 It is saying what Jesus did in his finished work on the cross is not good enough, and we must do something to save ourselves. It is adding law/works to grace. Matthew 7:21-23 They never did the will of His Father. John 6:40 And this is the will of Him who sent me, that all that seeth the Son, and believeth on Him, may have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.
