So, as a heart transplant recipient, I can definitely notice the difference in caffein’s effect on me now since my vagus nerve is no longer intact. For those who don't know, the vagus nerve is important in regulating the heart rate, and since mine is cut my heart rate is controlled more by hormones than anything else. So, anytime I drink an energy drink it puts my heart rate well above 105, when it normally hangs out around 90. It's interesting to see the effect of caffeine when it's not hindered by the parasympathetic nervous system.

I went off caffeine for about 9 months, got no heart issues just did it to see what happens, 9 months later had a large coffee from a proper coffee joint ..... it was strong as and got the trembles..... back off it now. So kids throw down these drinks, just one lil 250ml can of Redbull has 27g of sugar, 80g of caffeine, and a whopping 475Kj of energy.

My heart was horrible as a child before my proper diagnosis and treatment of my arrhythmia. Once as a kid I tried a small amount out of curiosity (long story short I heard it was an acquired taste so I tried a good few sips) and it was genuinely enough to spike my heart rate so eradically it just started vibrating in place instead of beating. Meds make it so my heart beat is stable, but without those meds, caffeine would kill me. So to play it entirely safe I usually just drink decaf. The body is so strange, especially our hearts and brains imo. I'm glad your heart is beating strong and you recovered. Blessings to you and your health.

Why it’s important to ask for a history: 6 months ago I had to take my grandma to the doctor because she felt like she was dying. After a doctor referred her to an ER and we left with the understanding she had a urinary tract infection. Two days later she was back in the ER and had to spend the night (she was given an IV). She seemed better, but two days later she was back. Her regular doctor received her titer and said that she had two tick borne diseases, but after a complete course of antibiotics, she still felt like she was dying, and at this point it was hard to convince her otherwise. Here’s the thing, though. I know my grandmother and I’ve never known her to be sick. Her infections were mild so I’m sure antibiotics helped - but the truth is that she’s been losing weight for a while now. The fasting (and research) I’ve been doing for a little over a year now taught me a lot about my body and the side effects of certain nutrient deficiencies. Some of her symptoms seemed strikingly similar to a time where I suffered an potassium deficiency when I got lost backpacking on a mountain while fasting. In asking her to recall what she ate, drank, and when, and how typical that behavior was, I realized that she’s barely been feeding herself. (I had to get specific, though, because at that point she didn’t see her intake habits as an issue) I suggested to her GP that she might be having nutrient deficiencies, and after an hour long conversation with her, he agreed with my findings. She’s back up to peak performance now for a soon to be 95 year old woman! It’s not that the tests the previous doctor (who wasn’t her GP), or the ER did were not important - but they were too busy with their understandably hectic post-covid schedules to ask about her dietary habits. I also think that, possibly, we are too quick to look for solutions that require a medicated or surgical response, when we should maybe first look for causes that do not necessarily require the intervention of a health expert. I think this is particularly important for the elderly, as there are plenty of psychological, social, and nutritional deficits that they may incur as a result of the situationally dependent lifestyles they lead. It is my personal opinion that we might have become too reliant on quick fixes, simple solutions, and drugs, whereas the nature of human health is often too nuanced and circumstantial to reliably validate this mindset.

This is why it's important to go and see your GP, not bother the doctors in A&E. Emergency doctors are trained to deal with immediate, life threatening illnesses. Lack of nutrition is slow and chronic. Her GP would have had time to talk to her about it and gathered info about her habits. It's kinda on your grandma/your family for not taking the proper steps in the first place, not the ER doctor's fault. Their job is to stop you from dying in that moment, not to treat a chronic illness. People go to A&E for any old thing these days.

I'm trying to cut down to just water and smoothies, because I have had some weird health issues (like a mild form of Orthopnoea, which I didn't know was a thing until you mentioned it here), and some occasional kidney pains, some of which I thought were related to my smoking which I quit at the start of this year. Very good video. The topic of caffeine and energy drinks has grabbed my attention for a while now. Both from a health perspective and an ergogenic and nootropic perspective. From a health perspective I've always found it interesting to find how some adults can say 'energy drinks are poison' and refuse to have one can, but drink coffee like water every day. Just like descescribed by the patient in the video, some people get severe withdrawal symptoms when they quit drinking coffee, which leads to lethargy, anxiety, irritability etc. Meanwhile, for exercise performance caffeine is being studied as an ergogenic aid. Sometimes dosages of 3 mg/kg which would be around the 200-300mg range for most adults (more than a can of monster or two coffees), up to 6 mg/kg or 9 mg/kg of bodyweight. The latter dose are within the range of 4 cans of monster or even more. And monster is the big boy when it comes to caffeine content. I do understand that energy drinks can contain loads of sugar, but there are also the sugar free counterparts. I also understand that unlike coffee or expensive pots of pre-workout drinks, energy drinks are appealing for children. Even worse, they are heavily marketed towards minors. However, if they were to be consumed by the same individual, I have hardly found any compelling evidence that either source of caffeine is worse than the other. Big Coffee chains serve heavily sugared coffees and sugar free energy drinks and pre-workout drinks exist as well. I would absolutely love it if more research would exist that compares different caffeinated products both in theory (what if someone were to drink 10 cups of black coffee) and in practice (what health effects to athletes experience that regularly take 6-9 mg/kg bw caffeine in the form of pre-workout?) All I'm doing is share my thoughts. I'm not on team coffee or team energy drink, nor a I on team drink it or team abstain. I am on team 'very curious about future research'. Time to stop procrastinating and get my ass to work.

I’ve been wondering how it compares to sugary coffees, since that’s my main caffeine vehicle. Obviously 2 sugars in a cup is much less than the.. 6? 9? in a Red Bull, but it’s still a lot more than without any, if you have lots of coffee, which I do.

That might mean the Brits have a limited time to mock the 'Muriakans' need of "relatable" units... which I note merely on the principle of evenly mockery. PS: we Italians rely on the most, ultimately, definitely, relatable of all units, the "q.b." ("quanto basta"), which refers to being "good enough", or not. That's how our recipes are so perfect!

The same way as i always did on coffe when people were so proud to be dependent on coffein for bein awake. I always try to avoid depending on substances for "normal" body functions like being awake. I have compared my abilities to stay awake with my collegues in night shifts, and it seems, that they in most cases have a harder time than i do. Their "weapon" of choice is either coffee or energy drinks, mine is chewing gum (without sugar and no caffeine or simila one. Apple arome for the most part ;-) and drinking water. It's not for anything the chewing gum contains, but the actvation of the jaw muscles seems to help in staying awake.

Regarding the scene involving the human sacrifice, is there medical truth in "taking out a still beating heart while the victim agonizes?" I know this is a movie, and even the codices from the Aztecs also seem to say that victims' heart was still beating, but I'd expect someone to pass out due to pain or have only a few seconds of consciousness after the heart is taken out. Just a Mexican asking this in case he stumbles into the wrong path and is faced with a spontaneous bout of sacrifices by undesirable third parties.

The second any artery from the heart is severed you can expect loss of vision within a couple of seconds, motor control in a couple more and consciousness entirely by 8 seconds. If any of those arteries are severed the heart will be unable to produce a forward pressure to the brain immediately. It would keep beating for a while and quickly begin to fibrillate. By excision it would be fibrillating. By the time the heart is outside the chest the person would be unconscious, unless someone profoundly skilled carefully separated it from connective tissue before severing every artery at once and pulling it from the chest immediately. You would have to remove it from the chest within 2-3 seconds of that first artery for the person to see their heart.

Thanks for confirming wtf happened to me twice this year. I've had a severe pain just below the ribs in the middle early this year. Thought I ate something bad, ended up in bed for a week. It allowed me to get off energy drinks after a busy 15 months. That did not last long though and soon I was back to may usual 2x500ml cans a day. About 2 months ago, the same pain, though less severe, went to see the GP, was told to take ibuprofen for a month to lower the inflammation. There are people who drink it for years and say they are fine, I was fine too, for a long time. It's just a guess but maybe the fact that we had lockdowns, so energy drinks and zero excercise combined. Who knows. Trying to go caffeine free till next year, whish me luck.

Exactly, there is no need to drink this junk. Just get a good coffee instead ;) I was thinking about making a banana shake and adding something to give it a little extra kick. I noticed a healthy shake with soy milk, banana, a piece of veggie and raisins and maybe oats, give a nice energy boost, so if there was a bit of caffeine, like in small coffee, it would be even better! ;)

@@Bramble20322 True, but I read somewhere (on the can itself few years ago?) there are 2 coffees worth of caffeine in redbull. Now I have done a quick search and the concentration seems to be similar, so I was wrong or it was about a bigger can of redbull if there are any. Standard are 250ml I think. Personally I would not want to mix it now, because shakes are great and the coffee is good on its own ;)

So much fun and information in one video. Again. Like allways. I'm overwhelmed. Your cardiologist friend just uses the "don't want to show anyone my whole living room/mess in the background" setting for his cam. It's not wrong, it's a well considered decision... ;-)

It’s interesting to think about a “heavy drinker” being someone who drinks something nonalcoholic. Caffeine isn’t often thought of a drug, but so many of us are physically dependent on it. Thanks for the video and great insight as always!

I have withdrawn from caffeine several times but I keep coming back. It will help me cope with my day, I thought. If it were not safe, surely the store would not sell it next to the whiskey and cigarettes.

Yea but a lot of us aren't but still depend on it in certain situations (such as when having to work on low sleep) so treating it the same as the other drugs would be unfair to - most of the population.

No, they aren't. When you don't drink it you are just less hyper. That's called not getting the benefits, not "physical dependence".
