Thank you John for another beautiful walk. When my daughter was little we were in Waterlow Park three or four times a week, rain hail or shine. Coming home from there one Sunday afternoon we were on Dartmouth Park Hill when my ex spotted a hole in the ground inside a building site by the Whittington Hospital. When he looked closer he could see a big red cat sitting in the hole, clearly unwell, so we took the cat home with us on the baby's pram, got it checked out by the vets, put up notices asking if anyone had lost him and when there was no response, we kept him and he was my beloved Red Thomas who lived a life of luxury with us. Talking to a person at the bus stop one day, they mentioned an elderly chap who had lived all his life in one house in Bredgar Rd, off Dartmouth Park Hill.. The council built some new flats and the old chap's home was compulsorily purchased. Poor old man was decanted into these new flats, which he didn't want to go to at all. He didn't last long, only about six months. When he died the Vicar came and got his dog and his tortoise and off they went to an uncertain future at the RSPCA. But his big red cat escaped and was never seen again. I like to think the old man was looking out for his beastie and made sure it was found by a soft git like me who would make sure it was well loved for the rest of its days!

What a lovely thought to think that you may have found his cat. I can imagine a happy and smug cat living it’s best life with you

There are lots of wandering cats in the cemetery. I wonder if they all have deceased owners. Thank you for your story.

I remember reading a book by ghost hunter Harry Price who was convinced that a vampire existed in Highgate. He claimed that he saw a tall, dark and menacing figure by a headstone. Gothic flavour to this video. Loved it, John. 👍🇯🇪

Hi Ivan, are you sure about that? Harry Price notes in Poltergeist Over England: Three Centuries of Mischievous Ghosts (1945) that during December 1942 Fairseat, a large Highgate home of historical interest was subject to poltergeist activity. I've never found a reference to Price sighting an entity in Highgate Cemetery though, much as I would love to. Any clues about the book you read, so I can work out its title?

I was living in North London in 77-78 and my uncle at that time was in the metropolitan police and he told me that there are catacombs beneath the place and unofficially Highgate went back to the days of the Romans.The caretaker back then also told us there were well over 200,00 people buried there on various levels connected to the catacombs. Who knows and i wasn't going to argue with my uncle due to the fact he was a commando in WW2 .2 of my cousins did see it in 69 on there way home from either the Flask or the Angel pubs at the top of the hill and said it was over 8' tall standing at the gate on Swains Lane with glowing red eye's .They ran the rest of the way home .I did have the honor of pissing on marks grave since i hate communism in all it's forms but he didn't appear to take issue with me.

Interesting fact - Malcolm McLaren's death mask on his grave was made by Nick Reynolds who plays in the Alabama 3. He is also the son of one of the great train robbers; Bruce Reynolds. Nick is a talented artist who has made his own special niche

In my teens I became a member of FOHC.Friends of Highgate Cemetery. They opened the older part of the cemetery a few times a year. It was very atmospheric. I was looking for vampires. I believe the other cemetery in the seven is West Norwood.

Enjoyed that little ramble. Took many notes of things to check out and visit.

Not sure if anybody has already said it, but the grave with the diagonal "D E A D" is that of artist Patrick Caulfield. Enjoyable video as always

I am in a Facebook group Archway Revisited (A Trip down Memory Lane) and John Leo Waters posted an excellent article on Sir Sydney Waterlow. Waterlow was an incredible man whose importance is no less important than Richard (Dick) Whittington. He had a very difficult life, born premature had a brutal upbringing and made a career in publishing. What he did for London's poor is most noteworthy. Thank you for this video John. Like a variant you say at the end of your videos, you never know where where you'll be, after doing a bit of research from your walks videos! 😂

I've been to the UK 55 times from the US. I don't know what percentage that included visiting London, but many times. When I watch your walks I feel like I missed so much. I've been to Highgate Cemetery and the reason that I went there was to find the grave of Norman Warne, the man Beatrix Potter was engaged to. The Beatrix Potter Society newsletter claimed this was where he was buried yet I could not find his grave. I asked someone from the Friends of Highgate Cemetery and they never heard of him. Just wondered if your map included his name or if you came across his grave. Sinead O'Leary also did a walk through. My other question was who was Amber Baker. The newish black marble grave seemed to be on the walkway. Love your videos and intend to watch them all. Seen many but not all of them. Best to you, Jane, Philadelphia

Thank you. It was a delight to see Highgate and the cemetery again. I grew up in Hornsey during the sixties through until the nineties and I know the area very well. As teenagers we would climb the walls to get into both sides of the cemetery. I lived just off Archway Road for a few years and Waterlow Park was a wonderful place to relax and catch a breath when walking to work near Parliament Hill.

Another great episode, Sunday evening's wouldn't be the same without you.

Lovely walk John. Was Hook Lane/Golders Green the 7th Cemetary and was Brompton one and is that in West London, please?

I always think the grassy parks of London are so civilized but then your cultural knowledge touring around Highgate shows there’s much more to it than ‘grass between the toes’ (reference to the cemetery too!). Thanks for a lovely walk John.

David Farrant, Highgate Vampire Hunter, used to frequent Muswell Hill library at the turn of the century. I worked there and we had a whole cast of characters that would pop in, including the Camden Ripper. Interesting times!

Very informative video John. Interesting to see the graves of Bert Jansch and his wife. I was fortunate enough to see Bert play live a number of times here in Edinburgh. A fine musician.

Another interesting video,John. Ther is a great book about Highgate Cemetery-'Victorian Valhalla' (1984) by Felix Barker and one called 'The Magnificent Seven' (2011) by Jphn Turpin and Derrick Knight, about all the cemeteries. Time is such a strange thing, someone with as much energy and life as Malcolm Mclaren has been gone for 11 years.

Another great video, Thanks John, I visited the Grove in 2016 after George Michael passed , he lived there and is buried at Highgate in hes mothers plot but is unmarked sadly. The private green area between the flask and the grove was a tempary memorial to George. I wish to vist highgate again and vist the cemetry, Roger Lyod pack and Jeremy beadle are also buried there.

I had just watched another video of a walk thru the cemetery and it showed George, his mother, and I believe his sister all together. Everything was cleaned up, marked well, and a very simple plot for them.

7:15 Edward Elgar is buried in the church yard in Little Malvern. I actually made a point to go visit him when I was in Great Malvern. I also visited the Morgan factory. I stayed in The Abbey hotel, where Haile Selassie stayed when in exile and he was visiting the area. Great trip !!

You beat me to it, JH: I drove past it this afternoon (I live nearby). The church is the RC church of St Wulstan, on the road from Great Malvern up to the Herefordshire Beacon. Sir Edward is buried there, together with his beloved Alice.

Hi John. I remember being very interested in this back in the mid-late nineties (Sean Manchester did a few radio interviews on the subject & David Farrant frequented some online forums back then) It was very intriguing and this brought it all back. Thanks for the memories!

I haven't been up around that incredibly hilly area of North London since my Son moved out of the local Archway area. Another incredible walk, thank you John.

Used to go through the cemetery when I was a child visiting my great aunt. We always went to the Karl Marx grave and did the power to the people cry and punch from Citizen Smith, our last name. I wish I had gone to Kensal Green and Brompton as they have such beautiful statues.

Ah Highgate ….love a pint of neck oil in the flask . Bumped into Dave Davies out the kinks last summer and shared a coffee….plus a poem of mine !

Another superb episode John - inspired to buy the vampire book and even stump up the cash to go visit the Highgate Cemetary - used to roaming free in the Tower Hamlets equivalent - admittedly fewer celeb corpses in the East End!

Thanks for the walk, John. Highgate Cemetery holds a special place in my heart in that the funerary chapel was the subject of my adaptive reuse studio project in architecture school while on a semester long study in London, 1979. I've been back many times since then to visit. I found you series last year during the health crisis that precluded my planned 2020 visit. Your videos have inspired me to attempt to do something similar here in Milwaukee with a focus on the history of the urban setting and its architecture. Perhaps a visit to the west side would be a potential future video. There are many significant and interesting features in that part. West Norwood was the seventh! All the best!

Malcolm Mclaren's grave is cool. The other one I particularly liked was the one with the cut-out letters spelling "DEAD". A Google search told me that it belongs to artist, Patrick Caulfield, who designed it himself. Dead good.

Lovely film, as always….so many headstones in Highgate, like the TV prankster Jeremy Beadle who’s buried next to A Pratt. Says it all really. I’ve often thought that the churches followed the water sources south in Hampstead, Highgate, Archway Crouch End (obvious one), as they also inhabit the same North London ridgeway exposed after the last ice age that then scoured the southern lowland basin. Highgate would have been a peak of an island chain.

The way nature is taking back its land is amazing to see. Love this video John 👍

Thanks, John. This made my day. Now I've got to go learn more about the Highgate vampire! Some twenty-odd years ago (closer to thirty now, actually), when I was a student, I remember seeing a production of Hamlet in a tiny room over a Greek restaurant in Soho. We all sat on the floor, and the "stage" was whatever space was left over. I had a front row seat and was rapt the entire time. I still remember that performance. Best Hamlet I've ever seen.

Thanks John for a very interesting video. I was born in Camden Town, and we moved (almost) to the top of Highgate Hill when I was still young. Remember a pub at the top of the hill, and having a great time playing in Waterlow Park and Highgate Woods.

The volunteers have done a fantastic job. The cemetery is unrecognisable from 35 years ago, when we lived just down the road.

Fascinating walk, I remember reading a highwayman book set in Highgate but that was back in the 50s so can't remember the title. The cemetery looks fascinating, who would have thought a cemetery would have a gift shop! Look forward to your next one--wherever that may be.

Imagine what Karl Marx would think of selling Karl Marx memorabilia in a cemetery that has become a tourist trap based on Karl Marx.

I visited Highgate and the cemetery for the first time yesterday too. Was a really pleasant walk.

Would love to see a walk around the City of London cemetery in Manor Park, if you haven't already done one. It's just a short walk across Wanstead Flats from Leytonstone. Meanwhile, another interesting and informative video. They are regular Sunday night viewing these days.

I have my nan & granddad buried in the old cemetry along with a few other distant relatives. I have not been there for 30+ years, but I will visit late october 2021. Nice video as usual..... cheers

Great video, thanks! I used to live in Highgate Village and met Sean Manchester a couple of times. I was just a kid though so no more interaction than saying hello but I remember some of the vampire stories. Nice seeing all my old haunts again 👍

Wonderful video, I love Highgate. Being a fan of Pink Floyd, seeing St. Michael's church was especially good as it featured in the second promo video made for their very first single "Arnold Layne" back in 1967 (the first promo was shot at West Wittering beach). I could wander around the cemeteries for hours and never get bored!

Another fascinating video, John. I went to Highgate Cemetery (East) today. By chance my visit coincided with the 140th anniversary of Karl Marx's death (14 March 1883) this coming Tuesday, and there was an international Communist gathering at his memorial when I was there today, including representatives of Cuba, Vietnam, Greece, and several other countries. A hearty rendition of the Internationale concluded the occasion. I didn't see any vampires, but there were some squirrels stalking me as I walked among the gravestones.

Another great walk John. Planning to follow in your footsteps on this one soon.

I always want to visit Highgate, another one for my bucket list.

Our local "Highgate" at Bristol is Arno's Vale. It's full of local worthies,some nationally famous and we have the tomb of the Rajah. It's like a mix of graveyard,park and nature reserve. It was saved by local people from desecration under the guise of development. My favourite Marx is Groucho. That Karl Marx was a total freeloader. He used to get loans off his servant to keep his family,and he got her preggers too. Economic genius. I don't think so. All good cemeteries should be slightly spooky.

Stumbled across your video today....I'd been to Highgate Cemetery a few years ago on a darkening afternoon....One could well imagine Vamp-ish folk....The occasional Goth helped to reinforce the feeling....Shall look for more of your walks in my FAVORITE CITY....LONDON !!!!

Living in Kentish Town in the late 1960s, Highgate Cemetery was the natural end of a stoned weekend wander. Bones were easy to find, which felt quite normal at the time. Looking back, it was absolutely bizarre - but there and then, the bizarre was the norm (and vice-versa). Today, everything has been tidied up - on balance a good thing, though I wish I'd kept a skull to put on my desk. Holly Village is a weird place - it tried to be charming and Gothic, but ended up creepy and slightly depressing.

You can see just how much has been cleared by the cemetery volunteer force, exposing graves that had been completely obscured for more than 50 years. Even more like 100 in many cases.

Thank you John, that was a really lovely walk. I did enjoy all the history plus the Highgate Cemetery is always worth seeing. This area brought back so many memories for me of growing up in London. Thank you so much 💕🇦🇺

Loved the Episode John! Been involved with the investigation of Highgate and its surrounding areas for years! Knew David Farrant well. Even encountered something "unearthly" one evening in Swains Lane. Investigated The Gatehouse Pub too which was fascinating. Captured what we believed to be an EVP, Electronic Voice phenomena, saying "Francis". It was only until we got home that we realised that the connection with Francis Bacon and Highgate where he died!

Wonderful film. I used to live in that area and enjoyed seeing the old 'hood. If you find yourself back at Gospel Oak, I suggest a wander round Lissenden Gardens (a good bit of showbiz history and literary history there ... and where I lived). There is an entrance from the Gardens to the Heath, so head straight up to Parliament Hill for the view. Thanks for including Swains Lane!
