A Strange Structure On Google Maps? - Let's Go!

While exploring satellite imagery I came across a strange structure very far into the mountains that looked like an interesting ride.

I used to work for the BLM. The mound on rocks and morter are so the smaller animals can crawl up and get a drink without falling in, drowning and spoiling the water. The metal mesh inside the trough, used to be attached to the inside wall. So if an animal does fall in. It can swim over to it and climb out. That barrel buried. Probably has a valve it so they can drain the trough if they need to. PS that bottle is a Budwiser beer bottle. great video.

That “buried barrel” is the old well where water was pumped up into the trough for livestock.

The concrete structure is a somewhat older variety of a "Wildlife Guzzler," that's what we at the USDA/NRCS call them, it provides water for wildlife. The small section of fence you found before you got to the guzzler, was a "woven wire," or sheep fence.

I mean, come ON! That Western Desert scenery is phenomenal. We fell in love with it when we lived in AZ for about 6 months, back about 20 years ago. Gorgeous.

As an Australian this is Fallout. Recognise the locations. Beautiful landscape. Also reminds me of the Flinders Ranges.

Can you imagine how rough it was going through there in a covered wagon?

Cool. Sometimes, the thinner paths are old wagon trails. I'd look along the old creek beds for artifacts. Thank You for the videos. I Love the Desert. I'm from Henderson and ride horsrs and motorcycles all through the deserts and dry lakes. Cool. I can't walk anymore, so, Thanks again.

That open area is probably an expeditionary airfield. during WW2 there was a fall back plan to refuel and rearm planes to attack Japanese invaders. They are all along the west coast but many are abandoned or municipal airports now. I met an old fellow who claimed he found a tunnel complex filled with vehicles and equipment. It was somewhere between 29 palms and Barstow. Probably close to the rail road.

I'm in AZ, so we have the same snake issue you do. The thing with them is that they'll be hidden in the hottest parts of the day, and most active around sunrise and sunset (and later). Avoid walking near thick overhanging vegetation, as that's where they stay out of the sun. And definitely be cautious if lifting boards and panels off the ground. They love hiding under that stuff.

First time viewer. Really enjoyed the video; the music was nice, too. Thanks for taking us along to somewhere I would otherwise never had the opportunity to go!

I bet the clear area is a pit area for the races. Cool old water trough. Great adventure.

Hardly strange. It's very typical to find old water troughs like this that would of been piped into a spring to provide water for livestock or wildlife. The unfortunate aspect is they are not maintained or the springs no longer produce as they once did.

it's amazing to see a fairly well fenced in area of land going up a hill with a water trough and literally nothing else in the middle of nowhere many miles away from everything. It would be a good place to have a "self sufficient" setup assuming there's fresh water running through the hill or near area. Abandoned for a reason.

Nice video. I think it would be interesting if you talked about the different plants that are growing in areas you explore.

I come from Henderson Nevada originally but I dont live too far away from So. Nevada, I have been to that dry lake before years ago but you have ventured to some areas that I have never seen or been to before, Those mountains must be the mountain range that divides the desert area south of Boulder city towards Searchlight on the other side if Im not mistaken, I took a trail from Cal-nev-ari out towards these mountains just west of there, rugged but awesome as hell, I did alot of explorations around the desert area around Laughlin and Bullhead as well. Thanks for taking us on this little trek.

I swapped the mechanical fan with an electric fan in my 91 rodeo, it made a huge difference in power and fuel economy! Depending on your skill, you can add a thermal switch to the radiator at the inlet, and a relay to automatically turn it on and off. I put the hot signal to the ac as that circuit is only live when the vehicle is running. Took my rodeo from an average of 9mpg to 16mpg with that alone.

It's okay to show the drive out, you'll have a lot of viewers who have done similar drives or those who just appreciate the natural beauty of the desert and absolutely want to see it!
