Trance is the modern reincarnation of classical music. In many ways, it's the truest and purest form of conveying emotions through melodies, especially inside the electronic genre. At its best, a trance track can invite the listener to a spiritual, emotional and even to an intellectual journey. It can make you feel, it can make you think, all on a very deep level. Trance is about constant progression, it's about slowly building up something beautiful (and at the end, slowly decounstructing it) that eventually puts the listener into a trance-like state (hence the name) and evokes a cathartic feeling inside of him/her. Phrases such as euphoria, energy, melancholy and delirium are also key, essential components that help define what trance truly, really is.Trance is more than just a genre - it's a way of living and experiencing all the things around you. Trance is a tool to achieve a higher state of awareness and see the world differently and more fully. At least this is what trance means to me. - Unfortunately, I can't help but feel that in the previous couple of years, prominent members of the trance scene tried and still actively try to transform the genre into something that totally goes against the genre's core identity, in an attempt to make it more mainstream. Or more specifically, they create tracks that they then wrongfully label as trance even though these have nothing in common with a proper trance track, aside from the fact that these are also electronic music. I truly think it's a shame and such a sad thing, because trance simply deserves better than this. Trance has evolved and changed through the years ever since its early techno and rave roots, but up until 2012-2013, it managed to stay true to itself, even though there were some bigger changes in the early 2010's that gave trance tracks a more modern, fresh and slightly more commercial sound. - What people like Armin doesn't seem to get is that those who whine about modern "trance" music do not actually whine because it's different. Gouryella - Anahera is completely different than System F - Out of the Blue and both tracks are from entirely different periods of the genre yet both are masterpieces. The reason why people - like me - actually "whine" is because most of the new tracks are not just different... but they are different and I dare to say, objectively mediocre and often bad. Why? Because in an attempt to make trance music more mainstream, producers and DJs like Armin transformed one of the most emotion-filled and complex musical genres into the most soulless and simplistic thing imaginable. - This is the heavily commercialized EDM I'm talking about that people like Armin and his friends shamelessly and constantly refer to as trance. I don't want to analyze every dissimilarity between true trance and modern "trance" / EDM, but I mention a few key examples. As I've previously mentioned, trance is supposed to be about progression, about slowly constructing a track melody by melody, note by note that slowly puts the listener into a trance-like state which in the end, helps to achieve the catharsis. Therefore, trance is a very progressive genre because melody progression is a defining factor in it. Ironically, most modern "trance" tracks that also gets labeled as progressive a lot of times have anything, but progression. - They are built for people with extremely low attention spans. To give you a movie example: if true trance is a great slow-burner, like Drive (2011), then modern "trance" is like all the Transformers movies. They throw a lot of sh*t to your face in a rapid manner so you might not notice how bad the experience actually was. Just examine basically any modern "trance" track or modern remix of an old classic. Producers simply don't let the music breathe anymore and don't let the music to slowly build up to something. No. They feel the need to constantly throw in random sound effects and really out of place and often bad "melodies" that totally break the flow and progression of the given track. They don't respect the emotional intelligence of the listeners enough to trust them and they don't let listeners to immerse themeselves in the music. Trance is not about a deep, hypnotic state anymore. It's about random noises thrown together - or at least the modern interpretation of it. - As I've also said before, true trance is one of the purest forms of music and possibly the best genre to convey emotions using melodies. Therefore, most trance tracks do not had any vocal, and even when they had, the vocals were never the key, definining parts of trance tracks. If there was a vocal, it was only there to help support and elevate the core melody, regardless of the chosen track. Yet, in most modern "trance" tracks, there's a strong vocal presence that also acts as the main part and focus of the whole music. Why? Because in theory, vocals help to sell a track better, and producers also try to compensate for the emotional conflict / emotion-shortage that is present in the track because of the progress-breaking random melodies and sounds. They do this by trying so hard with the vocals to be as emotional as possible, but it comes of as cringy and extremely forced, unnatural instead. - If what Armin says is true - that he is driven by the passion for trance music rather than money - than he should have never done all the things he did in the past couple of years - things that have lead to the downfall of the genre. He always says he doesn't want to repeat himself because that would be easy - he wants to innovate. Someone please tell me, how exactly do you innovate in art? I get that you can innovate on a car design by coming up with a better engine idea for example. But how do you innovate on Mona Lisa? By drawing a carrot nose to her and giving her pink sunglasses, or what? The boundaries and the identity of the trance genre were already fully layed down way back in 1997 (even though numerous trance tracks have existed before that). If you do not want to repeat yourself, be creative and create something fresh, something new within those boundaries. - You may experiment, which in the best cases, leads to emerging, new musical genres - this is how trance was born from rave/techno, basically. Andy Blueman (one of the greatest uplifting trance producers) has also experimented and this way created some mindblowing, wonderful tracks outside of the trance genre (like Playful Spirits of the Forest or The Journey of Atlantis). But don't try to "'innovate" it. You do not innovate art. And most importantly, do no try to call something trance which is clearly not trance - this way devaluing the genre as a whole. Especially not, when that new thing is just outright bad and lacks any kind of soul and identity and is nothing more than commercialized trash. Do not try to reinvent trance, don't be a George Lucas clone and don't try to do a prequel trilogy after the original one (I wonder how many people will get this). - I want true trance to be back. I may came off as harsh, but actually, I really respect Armin for a lot of reasons... after all, he did a lot for trance to keep it alive and it wouldn't be right to forget about that... but then again, he did a lof ot things to demolish it too. All I hope is if he puts Ferry in charge after ASOT 1000, Ferry will try to steer this ship away from the iceberg and eventually put in on the right track.

I hope Armin reads your post because it is eloquently written and true. I think his heart is not in trance anymore. If so there is no shame in that but he should leave ASOT and let someone who has passion for trance to take over the show.

Music taste is inherently subjective. Genres are inherently fluid. I've enjoyed the music here for the last 20 years and appreciate the effort that Armin and his crew put into playing a diverse range of music, evolving it as the genres and tastes evolve. If you don't like it, don't listen to it.

What an accurate and enlightening post. I have edited your post for grammar and posted it myself. Here is the corrected version in case you prefer it to your own. Trance is the modern reincarnation of classical music. In many ways, it's the most authentic and purest form of conveying emotions through melodies, especially inside the electronic genre. At its best, a Trance track can invite the listener to a spiritual, emotional, and even intellectual journey. It can make you feel; it can make you think, all on a very deep level. Trance is about constant progression; it's about slowly building up to something beautiful (and at the end, slowly deconstructing it) that eventually puts the listener into a Trance-like state (hence the name) and evokes a cathartic feeling inside of him/her. Phrases such as euphoria, energy, melancholy, and delirium are crucial components that help define what Trance truly is. Trance is more than just a genre - it's a way of living and experiencing all the things around you. Trance is a tool to achieve a higher state of awareness and see the world differently and more fully. At least, this is what Trance means to me. - Unfortunately, I can't help but feel that in the past couple of years, prominent members of the Trance scene tried and still actively try to transform the genre into something that goes against the genre's core identity, in an attempt to make it more mainstream. Or more accurately, they create tracks that they wrongfully label as Trance, even though these have nothing in common with a proper Trance track, aside from the EDM genre. I genuinely think it's a shameful and sad occurrence because Trance deserves better than this. Trance has evolved and changed over the years since its early techno and rave roots. Still, up until 2012-2013, it managed to stay true to itself, even though some more significant changes in the early 2010s gave Trance tracks a more modern, fresh, and slightly commercial sound. - People like Armin don't seem to understand this because those who whine about modern "Trance" music do not complain because it's different. Gouryella - Anahera is entirely different from System F - Out of the Blue. Both tracks are from separate periods of the genre, yet both are masterpieces. People - like me - actually "whine" because most of the new tracks are not just different. They are objectively mediocre and often awful. Why? In an attempt to make Trance music more mainstream, producers and DJs like Armin transformed one of the most emotion-filled and complex musical genres into the most soulless and simplistic thing imaginable. - This transformation is the heavily commercialized EDM I've referenced. People like Armin and his friends shamelessly and continuously refer to this as Trance. I don't want to analyze every dissimilarity between pure Trance and modern "Trance" / EDM, but I mention a few key examples. As I've previously mentioned, Trance is supposed to be a progression, slowly constructing a track melody by melody, note by note that puts the listener into a Trance-like state. In the end, this helps to achieve the catharsis. Therefore, Trance is a very progressive genre because melody progression is a defining factor in it. Trance does not represent a deep, hypnotic state anymore. It resembles random noises thrown together - or at least the modern interpretation of it. - As I've also said before, real Trance is one of the purest forms of music and possibly the best genre to convey emotions using melodies. Therefore, most Trance tracks do not have any vocals, and even when they do, the vocals were never the key, defining parts of Trance tracks. If there was a vocal, it was only there to help support and elevate the core melody, regardless of the chosen track. I've listened to this radio show since 2011 and never missed one episode since. The reason being that I love his work, and I also love how he's bringing in new ideas and introducing new kinds of music into the electronic dance music scene, not as a 'Trance Lover' but as a fan of electronic music. I think Armin's point was to not have music turn into a form of 'tribalism'- labelling certain music as trance, or house music or 'mainstream EDM' that all the 'music critics' like to call it. This form of tribalism only cause a divide, whereas music should be the one uniting us all together as one community. The fact that people start to call Armin a 'betrayer' or 'jumping into mainstream' sounds pointless and not constructive at all. Look at his past contributions to this genre, getting more people into this genre and making us all united as one. So let's just all stop this petty criticism and enjoy the music we have right now in this climate, shall we?

I see your point and respect that! The only thing that I, and I know from other perspectives as well that we don't really like to hear EDM, without a good melody or emotion in a track. I hope you agree ^.^ and if not that's also fine hehe. Peace ✌🏾

@@noahliasam7407 I agree to your point too! I do find myself feeling a lil annoyed or troubled when he plays 'non-trancey' music on ASOT episodes. But then again I reminded myself of the point that we should just enjoy the genre that we really love!!!

Well said ! I've been producing electronic / EDM / cinematic BGM for my KZread vids since 2012, but have listened to Armin since 2000. ASOT has always inspired me to produce better melodies.

Armin, Ferry, Tiesto, Van Dyk, Oakenfold, led the path to many great Trance DJ's who keep the spirit of Trance today, Kearney, Tyas, Askew, Callaghan, MORPH, Aly and Fila, among countless of others who support countless producers from all around the globe, people who say this are just getting old, the Scene remains big and underground, theres something for everyone.

Well Armin is right, in 1996 we called anything from 132 BMP forward just ''Techno'' or Club Music, the word Trance came around from a Track called Dance To Trance, ''Trance'' Music is Melodic Techno speeded up that eventually found it's general form just recently, it's all about Atmosphere Breakdown Buildup and Boom, most of it todays is structured the same to be mixed, back then some tracks were 10 mins and you had to find the cue by Vinyl, all Music evolves and yes it can also have an identity but not a musical or sound limit. No one back then said stuff like that ''That's this or that's Progressive Electro Ambient Reggae Rap Death Wave''
