A Speaker Microphone For The uSDX Radio.

Ғылым және технология

The uSDX radio by DL2MAN and PE1NNZ is my favorite HF bug-out radio. While it has the merit of sporting an actual speaker in the case, the sound is not as loud as I would like it to be. In this video I show you how to adapt the Retevis HK008 amplified speaker microphone to the uSDX.

Just make an adapter cable using a Kenwood 2 pin extension cable. I did post a comment which links to a (tr)uSDX forum on this subject, but it disappeared. There is no need to wreck the speaker mic. This means that you can use the Retevis HK008 with other radios!

I designed a pretty neat little stand for this radio in desktop use, I have the same mic just sitting around, I’ll have to give this a shot!

Just picked one of these up (well, ordered it and waited a month) and made a cable. What a HUGE difference it makes in the audio quality and usability of my (tr)uSDX. Thanks for the video! KC1RVK

Very cool! I've been looking for a good option for a speaker mic for my uSDX. Might be above my soldering skills, so I will probably have to buy an 2nd mic. :) But that's worth the learning experience. My hearing is also sub par for my age from shooting too. That and an AC/DC concert or two. Those boys are LOUD! Keep up the phenomenal content, Gil!

I should get this one as I really like it. I wanted to use an external powered speaker, but since I do a lot of SSB and I use a handheld mic anyway... why not use this one that also has a speaker. Really cool... thanks for sharing. I wonder how long the battery lasts before recharging. 73, YO6DXE.

Hey Gil, I'm guessing that this Retevis microphone's cable is unshielded like pretty much every other Chinese microphone? If so that's a deal-breaker for me. Have you noticed how the majority of microphones have relatively stiff and springy mic. cables these days?

It is unshielded, which I don't think is a problem. SSB isn't HiFi...

@@RadioPrepper Tnks Gil. I have had about three years of trouble with my Venus SW-3B and my Yaesu FT818nd, the former dropping RF on 40M, the latter totally locking up with no RF out on any band or mode for something like 6-8 hours, all traced to unshielded microphone and morse key leads. Only my KX3 seemed to be immune. Ferrite was not a cure. I now avoid unshielded leads. Thanks again Gil.

I wonder if you might have a common mode current issue with the antenna... What type is it?

  • @KL3NCH

@@RadioPrepper Well my Elecraft KX3 was always fine through the same antennas (home made "magnetic" loops with in-situ relevant CM chokes) but both the FT818nd and the SW-3B exhibited this problem on battery power and connected to a dummy load, so I'm going to say "No" to CM. It only took me deux ans to figure this out, and then only because I accidentally noticed that the FT818 didn't lock up when no morse key was connected. Each time I tried something, maybe it would seem OK at first because being a PTT issue, I only had a mic. connected and I thought I had a cure, and then with a morse key connected again, it would be back to square one which made me think the latest "fix" I'd tried didn't actually cure anything after all. Ordinarily I connect a morse key to the FT818, switch to CW and tune up. The 6-8 hours delay waiting for it to recover complicated the process of trying to make sense of it. I tried four different microphones all with the same effect. I have decided that screened leads are mandatory from now on. The SW-3B had the same problem but only on 40M caused by the unscreened morse key lead. Cheers Gil mon ami, 73 es sri fer long msg.

Hey Gil, I finally got around to doing this mic. mod. I did it for my Elecraft KX3. It sounds a bit better on TX than my Elecraft MH3 mic. I get disastrous feedback if the KX3 digital voice monitor facility is above level zero but that's no surprise. Like you I found it a pain to wire up but at least it worked first time. The audio out is barely louder than the KX3's internal loudspeaker, but I anticipated that from experimenting with other amplified loudspeakers, and it's easy to put the mic. up to l'oreille. Tks for putting me onto this Gil.

Bonjour Gil. Dois-je comprendre que le cablage est différent entre le (tr)Usdx et le Micro Retevis HK008. J'avais essayé avec des adaptateurs du commerce pour chaque fiche. Ça ne marchait pas. 73 de F4LCF

Nothing new here. There have been mod instructions for Baofeng spkr/mics since the TruSdX came out. The real question is why didn't DL2MAN (or anyone else) OFFER such a product themselves. I guess they don't really support voice.
