As much as it hurts, I have to admit that calling "A Song if Ice and Fire" an "active series" feels... optimistic at this point.

I have read both series (though I have read ASoIaF many years ago, back when I was arguably too young to have read it, so maybe take my opinion with a grain of salt), and here are my personal preferences on each point brought up here: Writing Styles: In this regard, I prefer SA. I love reading through his books, trying to remember every single detail (because you just KNOW they're gonna reappear in the grand finale), speculating on the ending and then seeing ever piece slowly come together like a massive jigsaw. While many Sanderson books are part of a series, they all feel like self contained packages that wrap up beautifully with a bow. Themes: Once again, I have to give this to SA. I'm just a sucker for a happy ending. I recently revisited ASoIaF through the audio books, and I was shocked by how depressing it actually was. At times it felt exhausting to listen to, emotionally taxing, as I once again saw almost every character spiral ever downward. SA has its dark points, too, but you know that it'll always turn out ok. Characters: I can't really give this one to either, since I love both. ASoIaF definitely has some of the most well written characters in fiction, no matter which war camp you look at. SA is more limited in that regard. Furthermore, because of how grim its world is, ASoIaF really makes you root for its characters, because you know that there's a very real risk of them dying. But where SA is superior imo is in the portrayal of what an environment of war, death and slavery can do to a persons psyche. Without spoiling anything, SA has some of the greatest representation of mental illness in fiction I have ever seen. Which doesn't say a lot, since I am not that well versed anyway, so take it for what it is lol. Worldbuilding: You're probably seeing a pattern here as, again, I'm giving this one to SA. I love fantasy for its escapism, though I am also a big fan of science and coherent application of technology. SA scratches my itch for both to a point where I could not wish for more. I love the different yet logical world of roshar and am immersed every time Navani geeks out on fabrials and see them applied. I love it. Magic: I love the flashy magic from SA, but I feel like it's not fair to dock points off of ASoIaF for its magic being less flashy. Its magic system is much more a soft magic system than the one in SA, it does what it needs to and it fits and accentuates the world absolutely perfectly. Again, can't go into too much detail, cuz spoilers. But, still... The knights radiant are just so fkin cool... xD Prose: I don't think I'm qualified to give an assessment here. SA is easy to read, and that helped me to get back into reading after a several year hiatus. But I also acknowledge the criticism that exists about it. That's all I feel i should say. Overall, I think it's clear that, personally, I had much more fun with SA. That is not to say that it's the better series, of course; all of this is based on personal preference. But if you saw yourself reflected in my likes and dislikes, without having read either, then this might be helpful to you. Or not, idk, thanks for reading anyway. xD

I had tried reading Mistborn years ago and didn't take a liking to it, but loved ASoIaF immediately. I read through the first two books with not too much issue, but then started to feel the slog as they got longer and more meandering. I love the writing and characters, but it often felt pointless to read everyone's perspectives when I was excited to read the main storyline. I think I lost patience with how it was a novel and a series of short stories all thrown in together. I wanted an editor to heavy hand it! I finally went back after watching all your videos and read the first Mistborn trilogy with a new appreciation for the world and wound up adoring the third book. Thank you for your insights, as always! (I may be biased, but I am also honest.)

I've also read both series, and I think I prefer Stormlight Archive, if for no other reason than it will be finished.

I mean, getting fed up waiting for the next ASOIAF book is one of the main reasons I picked up Stormlight in the first place. I've very rarely looked back since, but I am still hoping that one day, winds of winter may land... 🌬️🌨️

It's very good, but it would be much better if there was any hope of it being finished.... I'd say wait to read the series until a definitive release is out, cause the last book ends like, right before a gigantic climax

As a fan of both series each has its plot point that seems too convenient. I ASOIAF it's how all of the dragons and people with dragon blood were in Valeria when the place blew up except the targaeans and some of House Valarys. No one was out conquering, exploring, on trade routes. They all just hung out at home that week. In The Stormlight Archive its the oppressive amnesia everyone has. To keep plot points secret, the hugely significant world events were just forgotten despite thousands of participants and even more witnesses. (Talking about breaking oaths on a large scale.)

I gave ASoIaF a try. Two books were enough to convince me that I hated it and was done. Went to wikipedia to answer questions I wanted answered and then was done. Unfortunately, four years later HBO decided to turn it into a series and I had to keep hearing about it for the next decade....

Honestly I have never been able to enjoy anything by Gearge Martin, especially game of thrones. I read the first 2 books and they were just so damned boring and cringey for me. Ive been loving stormlight Archive though. I'm not saying George is a bad writer, he clearly has a massive fan base and has done well. I just mean it's not for me is all. Want to make that clear.

I find Stormlight one of the most overrated series i have ever read. The prose is average compared to Asoiaf or even just the worldbuilding. Its too artificial compared to Asoiaf and lotr. Characters in stormlight tend to be a lot similar or the same where as in asoiaf probably has the best cast in fantasy series. Stormlight is just marvel or superhero-esque book series which i find childish. To each their own but i tend to like reading stories that are convincing unlike stormlight. Asoiaf is more complex and the better written series imo. I like the magic system Brandon invented but other than that. His series tell more than they show. His humor, dialogue and romance are his weakness. Dialogue in asoiaf is probably the best in fantasy. George also knows how to write witty humor unlike sanderson and also knows how to write romance. Lmao. Do with this information as you will. Im not going to accept asoiaf slander by a series that just has marvel superheroes.
