    The only time I experienced -60F it was mind-bendingly cold. And windy. My tires froze to the ground. The ice shattering out from the undercarriage of my 4x4 sounded like breaking glass. Once it warmed up to -20 and the wind stopped, sun came out... it was like summer! We were all outside in sweaters and dark colored sweatshirts. The sun just felt incredible.

    Cas is one of my favorite animals at AW! I know you've talked a little about them in other videos, but it might be cool if you explained all the ways Arctic foxes are different from red foxes. Serafina can do all the modeling and camera stuff if Cas isn't comfortable with it. I just really think it's important that people understand how wonderful Arctic foxes are, and some of the problems they're facing as a species. Thanks for all you do!

    Foxes are hunting by smell and earing through the snow small mammals (rodents and anything that can hide or travel under the snow [mice, lemmings, musaraignes, campagnols...]). That is why they the jump/dive in the snow after acute detection. So, getting the nose close to the ground might be to smell the reality of a presence under the snow as a start in the hunt. And yes, it probably simply enjoy getting its nose in the cold too.

    if you cant pull him in any direction do you pick him up to take him back inside or does he choose when to go back in? btw this video was so cute i loved watching him play in snow!

  • @animalwondersmontana

    @animalwondersmontana

    6 жыл бұрын

    Andrew Freeman So, I can't just pull and continue to pull like you might see an untrained dog and walker struggling. I've taught Cas "leash etiquette" so I can use small tensions in the leash to communicate where I'd like him not to go as he shows intent to go a certain direction. I can also communicate where I'd like him to go using the same method and combining it with my own body language. It looks like I'm not doing much, but I have to constantly be checking in to make sure I don't miss a communication from him or have poor timing with my own communications. When time is up, I use a tight leash with no give, but not pulling. He knows this and usually lays down and let's me pick him up. If he was determined to continue the walk, I'd have to continue to walk with him until he agreed with my request. I used positive reinforcement enough in the initial training that it's just the way we communicate with each other now.

  • @andrewfreeman5382

    i think i unintentionally do this with my dog, when i want him to move to the right i move the leash to the right and without pulling he moves that way, that's really cool that it's actually a thing! It's also adorable how he just lays down. thanks so much for the response and i love your videos!

    Yay the foxes! I have been hoping to see them for ages. Cas looks so beautiful out there in the snow, it's really lovely to see him using his natural adaptations to move around so easily. It was also really interesting to hear that he has such a wary disposition, I had only really seen him on Sci show previously and his personality didn't really get a chance to shine through. I wonder why he is so reserved when you raised both him & Seraphina from little kits yet Seraphina is super friendly?

    This is a lovely video. It's very restful and calming to watch him play in the snow. Obviously your priority has to be what is best for the animals, but if you made a longer video of Cas in the snow, or other animals on walks, with background music similar to this one I would love to watch it. That would deviate a bit from your normal format so you might not want to but if you did I think lots of people would watch it.

    Teresa White He's pretty slow with his reactions so he usually just watches if he sees a little animal moving about. Our fed fox, Seraphina, tries to catch everything that moves. If they eat something while on a walk we have to make sure they get a dewormer shortly after because wild animals almost always have parasites.

    I'm a fat Canadian man and I was thinking loudly at my screen "zip up and put a toque on" all through this video, heck your coat does not look suitable for that kind of temperature. Just wearing a toque though makes a world of difference when out in the cold, it's amazing how much heat we can loose from the top of our head. I know that -20°C is far from death defying cold, when I was a kid my mum made us (well, me, I've always preferred indoor activities unlike my little brother) go out of the house when it was much colder than that, but even just 0°C is more comfortable with some temperature insulation on your head, no matter how old you are.
