    I just want to add that if you don’t feel comfortable using miracle gro that you can just use peat moss. I had Miracle Gro recommend by 3 sources, including expert collectors. It has peat in it so you can just use peat 🤗 (anthuriums and philos LOVE peat)

    You’ve introduced a new concept for me that I’m going to try and that is to stop watering my Anthurium fully and letting them sit until my moisture meter shows almost dry. It makes sense to water them with a watering pot every few days to keep moisture around them. I am a little scared though to change, but I think you’re right and that helps that I don’t live in a humid environment. Your leaves are gorgeous! I use tree fern in place of your peat I am not comfortable to try that yet. 😅

    Bang on with the advice. Air circulation is one of the most important but sometimes least talked about aspect of plant care. I only learnt the hard way about the detriments of leaving plants in their plastic nursery pots after bringing back home. Plastic pots are fine for plant nurseries because the plants are usually outdoors (with shade nets) and the air is constantly circulating. I now have my Anthuriums in terracotta orchid pots (the ones with the holes in the sides) and they love them.

    Thank you!! I did too! I just wish I had realized how bad the audio was beforehand. I felt the need to do this video especially because of that lol. For a while I was using diluted hydrogen peroxide 3% (1 pt. peroxide and 4 parts water). Then I tried Mosquito Bits that I soaked in water. Those two helped but did not eliminate my problem. Eventually I was talking to an expert collector who recommended Gnatrol BTI Fungus Gnat Killer. It is a powder that you put into water based on how bad your infestation is. I will link it below. It did WONDERS. www.ebay.com/itm/1-2-pound-GNATROL-BTI-Fungus-Gnat-killer-Pest-Control-Gnats-in-Soil-hydroponic/254443180269?hash=item3b3dfed0ed:g:scUAAOSwt0Fd9VLq:sc:USPSFirstClass!19709!US!-1

    ‏‪14:53‬‏ I loved your video it was the most comprehensive so far and i looked a lot, but for a beginner who only grow in soil, it is not reasonable to recommend bying 5 different substances just for trying to grow an anthurium. Doing a 50/50 mix of Sphagnum moss and Perlite helps avoid compaction and allows good aeration. It is what most use for Nepenthes, which also like staying consistently moist like Anthuriums. :)

    Such a helpful video, thank you!!! I should really change my watering routine hearing you say they like to be kept moist. But when you say moist, could you be more specific? I use a moisture meter so at what number would you recommend to water? And also, how far down in the soil should the moisture meter go?? As it is now, I water my clarinervium about every two weeks and although it hasn't died it has only given me one new leaf since May so it's definitely not thriving either 😂

  • @ThePlantsMeow

    @ThePlantsMeow

    4 жыл бұрын

    I do not use a moisture meter so I am not sure. I have in the past but it always says everything is dry so I think I'm doing something wrong with it lol! May I ask your soil composition? If the top of your soil looks dry I would say it is safe to water. You do not want your bottom half to get dry too. In the tropics they are used to water everyday. Unless the soil is heavy you should be fine watering more frequently. Your Clarinervium will thank you! Also, if you have not given it any fertilizer that should help in new growth as well. They cannot photosynthesize properly without it. 😊

    It is a natural substance made from a tropical plant called a tree fern that has fronds growing from the top. It is great for retaining water like a sponge and evenly distributing it throughout. It is also supposed to last and not break down like sphagnum does. I consider it the better alternative. 😃

    No, plants can be different in different environments. My Anthurium drink tap water, as a matter of fact, city tap water. Also, mine does not like overwatering. So I do let them dry down to a quarter of the bottom container.

    Of course they can be different in different environments. Everybody’s tap water is different. In my state there are towns with arsenic in their water. I have high salt in mine so tap isn’t an option. I simply recommend what is best - this doesn’t make it the ONLY way. Watering depends on your medium. If you have a very fast drying medium you’ll need to water more often. Denser mediums require it less frequently. My video is based on my environment. I cannot give advice for everybody’s unique environment. This is based on my own experience and talking with professional growers. I go into more detail in my comprehensive care guide. 😊

    Hi! For my forgetti anthurium I use sphagnum moss, charcoal, coco chips, and perlite, I’m hoping that would be okay? I used those ingredients because it was recommended, if you can reach out and let me know if that’s suitable :(

    M Ward this is difficult to say because it depends on numerous things like the vitality of a plant, fertilization, light, water, soil health, etc. You may get a new as soon as the last is finished hardening or months later.

    What are your thought on Worm casting for Anthuriums?

  • @ThePlantsMeow

    @ThePlantsMeow

    4 жыл бұрын

    I have not tried worm castings myself as none of my research about anthuriums suggested it. Even articles written by expert collectors mentioned the ones I have in the video. That being said I have done a lot of research about worm castings and they sound absolutely wonderful. They retain moisture, balance soil ph for proper nutrient absorption, prevent root rot, and contain plenty of nutrients with the added bonus that they will not burn your plant. I am highly considering switching to this for my anthuriums when the time comes. Just remember to reapply every 2-3 months! :)

    @@ThePlantsMeow Thanks for the opinion! I've seen or read that mostly vegetable gardeners uses them. Rarely see anyone uses them for their houseplants. Not sure why a lot of 'houseplant parents' aren't using them as they are readily available everywhere! Anyhooo, I've started using it on all my houseplants(mostly aroids) last week. I'll shall update you!

    Thank you, very informative video as always :) But I was wondering... You said, you used distilled water, since soft water made the edges crispy. Isn‘t distilled water softer then soft water, since distilled water is pure H2O? Would love to hear back from you ☺️

  • @ThePlantsMeow

    @ThePlantsMeow

    Soft water has high salt content, which is what makes it soft. This can kill your plants in time. Distilled is boiled down and pure. I recommend distilled or reverse osmosis. Reverse osmosis is the cheaper option if you have a system installed (and no plastic! Lol)

    Question. When you get anthuriums shipped to you how do you go about acclimating them to your environment? I took my anthurium out of its spaghnum moss and put it in water for a week and now I’m potting it up. Would you recommend this or something else? I noticed when I took the plant out of its water the roots were mushy /: I removed the really squishy ones but now I’m worried

  • @JustPaige_

    I should also specify that I didn’t do a thorough inspection to see if the roots were mushy when I received the plant.

    oh no, I've read a lot of instructions and I thought it was supposed to get dry and then thoroughly water! my anthurium has been starting to get a lot of brown on leaves so I'm wondering if that's the reason or something else... also my leaves are not pointing upwards :/ I am going to check the roots soon if there's something wrong there but do you have any idea what would be the most likely reason for the crunchy brown parts on leaves? I also suspected sun might've burnt them... I only put it on windowsill for the winter but I got the brown parts already before when it wasn't on window/straight sun.

  • @ThePlantsMeow

    I use them specifically for anthuriums because they really need that extra air to promote larger root growth. You could try it with other plants but it isn’t necessary bc it doesn’t really change the size of their roots as drastically 😊
