It’s not friendship though. Minny was still her employee. She was a nice and friendly boss. But they were paying her. That’s the part i never liked about this movie. As nice and touching the relationship between Minny and Celia was, it was never a relationship between equals. One was wealthy and employed the second one, who was poor and needed desperately a job. Which means that even though for now this relationship seemed going well, no one can tell if 20 years later, Celia wouldn’t fire Minny on a whim, like the mother of Skeetle did with Constantine.

What I find funny, to me, is how Hilly is so self-absorbed that she couldn't see or understand that man would've dumped her regardless of if Celia had been in the picture or not. And no amount of attempt to keep an "image" or societal pressure would've made him stay, let alone MARRY her as she hoped given he clearly didn't care about any of it in regards to Marrying Celia (Pregnant or not) or the scene she unintentionally made at that auction. He actually cares about PEOPLE, and she barely cares about anyone outside herself and her neck. They never would've made it.

Despite Minnie protesting, she'd always come find her and eat lunch with her at the little table in the kitchen designated for the help ... This scene where Celia cooked a HUGE meal and served it to her at the big table, is a big deal, she wanted Minnie to know how much she means to her!

All this belief does is give people a way to excuse their bad behavior, because they think their sins are forgiven, poof, just like that. This is unrealistic and not true. It's a very old pagan belief. The Pagans believed that their god had a son, they called him "the lamb" and "the light" and said that simply believing in him would absolve you of all your sins. This false belief predates Christianity. And early Christians fought against this blasphemous notion. Imagine being God, and your creation (humans) rewrite your word and choose to worship a man instead of Him. How disrespectful.

Minny on the other, is cautious and strong willed which is understandable considering the fact that she's constantly fighting for her life. They're 2 different individuals with different personality and that compliments very well. Minny made Celia strong and Celia made Minny remember that she IS STRONG. I would like to imagine that Minny and her children is living in the couples mansion and has been treating the children as their own

I love the reversal of every roll in that 🏠. It's a movie but so well thought out. To secure her job for life.. both welcomed her and acknowledged her impact on their relationship her giving Celia something to be proud of to make her feel like a wife and a good catch (she felt like she wasn't valuable) and Celia's husband pulling out her chair and being served by Celia at her own table with food that she taught her to make is mind blowing.

The story with these 2 is my favorite story line of this whole movie! There friendship and mutual respect for eachother helped heal them and helped them get through some of the hardest things women have to face... An abusive husband and going through a miscarriage (sadly several in this instance) and not being able to have a child. As well as them both being bullied, lied on, treated poorly due to jealousy of one and anger for not having complete control of the other and both treated as less than by someone who thought she was better than everyone else...

Just an FYI, for those who loved the movie and the book. There are rude references made by Hilly about where Celia was from, a place called Sugar Ditch. In real life, Sugar Ditch was a neighborhood located in Tunica, Mississippi. That area was listed as one of the poorest places in North America back in the day. There was a 60 minutes special in the early eighties that reported about the squalor conditions the folks in that neighborhood were forced to live in. These people were living in rundown shacks with rats and roaches, with a steady stream of raw sewage that literally ran along their homes, as if it were a stream of water. No hookups to local sewage systems, no running water, and no electric power. But these people were still being forced to pay for utilities that they didn't even have access to, even though the town had received tons of federal grant dollars to update those neighborhoods. Most of those people, were black folks, forced to live in modern day segregated areas.... forced to live in poverty....in filth. In the 1980s! But, just a few streets away there were upper middle-class neighborhoods. I'm telling you, if you do enough research, you will see just how dark the history of our country really is. It is sickening.

When the haves and have nots of any given time and place both treat each other with love, dignity and respect....that's when humanity is what we were meant to be. These two women did so much for eachother. The novel and movie are very complicated and absolutely both have their problems....but the storyline between these two characters is very moving. As a very visibly white girl who grew up poor but was able to get out from under more easily in part because I am white, the storyline covering their relationship made me cry when I read the book. They changed, and maybe saved, eachother's lives.
