A Simple Easy Aquarium Sump Filter

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

How is my simple DIY sump performing? Is it able to handle the load of the 300 gallon tank it is being used on? In this video we take a look at how the sump is doing after it's first three months of use.
You know that I consider sumps the king of filtration. This might provide an easy to understand and use sump design that anyone can use. Take a look and share your thoughts and tips in the comments below.

    Taking into account everything you've done to assist biological activity and the high flow rate of the sump and canister, Ben that 300 may be at full cycle already. I think it's possible. At any rate I think it's way past any risk of weird spikes. Sit back and enjoy it at this point. Thank you for sharing it with us as always.

    The tank looks really good and crystal clear. I do want to go through some math here- The 40 gallon aquarium sump has about 1 cu.ft of 20 ppi foam (18x12x6-8 inches depending on the height of water) The Fluval FX 6 can be filled with 1 cu.ft of foam as well. A couple of Fluval FX6 for that tank is perfect. Simple sumps are the best, but an even simpler FX6 may be just as good. Thank you for progressing the hobby and sharing the journey with us.

    That’s the third overflow or emergency pipe. If the other two were blocked (very unlikely in a fresh water tank) it would handle the return duties. It’s common that it lets a few drops come through.

So...do you have any videos that show the best way to take a current tank and use the overflow boxes to convert to a sump? I don't know if I can drill holes into my current tank at this point.

    I'm just now trying a canister filter for a 75 gal aquarium I'd like to have a sump for my 110 gal stock tank BUT What I have going is ALMOST like a sump but reversed. Where I have the water from the stock tank (go into a clear plastic tote over sponge's) from a spray bar & the sponge's is on a rack ABOVE the over flow holes that runs back INTO the tank where the pump pulls the water from & over the sponge's & it works great. The tote is on a stand not on the floor & I can get to the filter easy & do all the maintenance I need to do for it I have 9 goldfish in the stock tank & just as clean & clear as can be I don't clean the filters for 3 months.

  • @electrobob1

    I have been considering a sump like this for my 6 fancy goldfish, but their specific wishlist (high mechanical waste load) made me build the sump I have now. It features an auto syphon which is able to remove debris unlike a regular overflow, a mechanical pre filter, Bubble magus fleece filter and a polishing filter after the pump. the filter wool will be replaced with the water change (80%/4days). The reason for not using a canister or matten is to remove the mechanical load on a waterchange. Cleaning filter socks is high maintenance as well IMO. The water change+high maintenance takes about 45 minutes in total which makes a long term healthy fish very easy to do. FYI, the angled egg crate is to provide space for the whirl the drain is causing. This reduces noise of a gaging drain and cooperates with the water level in the Magus. Because the filtering is not in a cabinet the noise output needs to be nihil and I spend quite some time in this. Have a look into my account for "auto syphon ,bubble magus L, yellow ryukins fancy goldfish sump demo" The only thing s left to do is making a drip plate on top of the filter wool. greets! Erik

    Is there an equation that is used to determine the volume/size of tank to use for a sump according to the DT size? In my mind I'm thinking that if you used a cubic inch converted to gallons for the area from the top of the tank or waterline, to where the bottom of the sump intakes/returns are, you could get an idea of minimum volumes needed to keep the tank from overflowing the sump, yes? Also, I am in the middle of setting up a 90g tank for African cichlids, and I am planning on using the black diamond medium grain blasting media for my substrate, for the cost and because everything thing I read and research about what will make the colors of the fish pop says to use dark substrate/background etc etc. But you have a mixed color substrate and black background. Kaveman and cichlid bros all run normal color pool sand substrate etc. Us you substrate meant to keep a contrast so the tank isn't so dark, or are you using a buffer substrate along with the crushed coral that is a different color than the black? I have hard water and it comes out of the tap with PH in the high 8's to low 9's, so I don't think I'll need a buffer. Thinking about maybe adding a couple bags of medium to dark blue gravel to add a contrast, but would like to know what you're running and why, plus you're opinion. Thx

    It shouldn't pump water back into the tank faster than the overflow can return water to the sump, but that's usually not an issue, especially with what is called a "bean animal" style overflow set up which used three pipes to get water back to the tank (a primary, a secondary back-up and an emergency pipe). Your overflow box will give you a range to work within and your pump will list it's gps which then need to be adjusted based on how high you're pumping the water (it's called head pressure). It's a lot simpler than it sounds, LOL!

    So satisfying to see your success with the big tanks and especially the 300 sump. I've been thinking of a design for my future 180g+ tank. Definitely will be using Poret sponges with dual pumps. Your fish looks awesome in all your tanks. I may sound like a broken record but a school of Mono Angelicus in your 300 will give a tremendous dynamic of movement and highlight the Cichlids because of their shape. I think I heard you say you were considering Sliver Dollar, they also may accomplish the same. I have both with my mixed africans Mbunas, Peacock s, Tropheous, and a Venusus.

  • @BenOchart

    @BenOchart

    Unfortunately you’d lose most first time sump users at “fluidized.” This is why my current sumps are 90% matten sponges, one sump has socks and doesn’t . A few handfuls of Sera Seponex media and it’s good to go and works like a demon at keeping the tanks pristine. Here’s the back story: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pXyI0LCjfarRpJc.htmlsi=d3alKGN4lhD9yUKF

    @@BenOchart You do have a valid point. I was intimidated with talk of Bean Animal, Herbie, filter socks and fluidized bed when I built my first sump. I went the simple route with a Durso drain and matten sponges. What a disaster. The drain was a gurgling monster. Without filter socks, the sponges would quickly clog up with organic material and the water would overflow them. I lowered the water level but didn't have enough water capacity in the return pump section. And cleaning the matten sponges was a nightmare as half the crap would dump into the sump when I pulled them out. A sump with just filter socks and an air powered fluidized bed is so easy to maintain and very effective. They are easy to build with the right materials. Yep, i really need to do a video 🙂
