    Hi Mark, thanks for another great review. In your E-book, it would be wonderful if you take several use-cases, such as birds, sports and landscapes, and go through your preferred setup in detail. So often we are presented with a camera with immense capabilities and fantastic features, but we have trouble understanding the *why* of choosing a collection of settings for a particular use-case. Over time we can bumble our way to better settings, but it would be fantastic to hear your thought process for choosing the set-ups you work with, and how you arrived at those settings. I always look forward to your reviews. Well done.

    Great straight talking review as always 😊. Have to mention, as others have done, and having had a torn and detached retina and highly invasive and uncomfortable surgery to fix it, the retina is at the back of the eyeball. Sclera and iris and pupil are at the front 👍. Anyone wanting retinal photographic equipment needs the medical grade photographic equipment departments and the budget to suit 😊

    Great video, but we have come to expect this from you Mark 😉👍 Seems like a great camera, not perfect of course, but than no other one is as well. It’s amazing to me when we look at the development in the last few years. AF has gotten much better, now even high megapixel cameras deal with high ISO really well, video capabilities increase all the time, the viewfinder in these cameras have become absolutely stunning, and the list goes on and on and on. And I’m sure sometimes in the future things like tracking will even work almost perfect even with eye tracking for humans and animals. I’m also sure the eye AF will improve in a way that it might even try to look for the pupils and not “just” the eyes 😉. Especially due to the competition that basically has started again with mirrorless full frame cameras after the other companies like Canon and even Nikon have picked up the pace. I use a Sony A7III but I’m all for competition, that drives innovation.

    Another great video, Mark. Absolutely brilliant! I am almost at the point of purchasing an A1. (One of my many) reasons for purchase is because of the APS-C crop feature which effectively extends the focal length of any lens by 50%. My question is, do we lose any stops of light in using the crop feature (as with teleconverters)? For example, if I use the APS-C crop feature at the 200 mm end of a 70-200 2.8 zoom, will the 300 mm effective focal length still be at 2.8?

  • @AlphaCreativeSkills

    @AlphaCreativeSkills

    2 жыл бұрын

    The crop factor is applied to the angle of view and the aperture to find the equivalent depth of field. It is NOT applied to the aperture in terms of exposure. As we crop into an image, however, we are effectively zooming in on the noise - which is why the High ISO performance of the sensor is important. The A1 sensor allows us to crop aggressively at ISO 3200 while the A7RIV does not.

  • @paulravenscroft6045

    @paulravenscroft6045

    Many thanks for your reply, Mark. So just so I am completely clear, if I use the APS-C crop feature at the 200 mm end of a 70-200 2.8 zoom, the 300 mm effective focal length will still be at 2.8 (but I need to be aware that noise (might) become an issue - although this is probably less of an issue with the A1 compared to other Sony cameras).

    The AF Tracking is as reliable, when using it connected with the shutter release, as it is with it disconnected. The idea that the camera needs help in knowing when the subject is moving or stopped probably dates back six or seven years on some DSLRs that where the Phase Detect AF was not that good. I don't expect long-term BBAF users will change their ways but they need to be aware of the many features that cannot be used as a BBAF user, e.g., using the multiselector, using the Touch Pad to override a Focus Mode and Focus Area to instigate tracking with a target, holding down the AEL button assigned as a Recall Custom hold that will override the Drive and Focus modes with a pre-programmed subset of menu items.

    Sony don't tend to update cameras when they are a couple of models old. The A9 had two major updates in 2019 and I would imagine future updates will only be to cover new flash or lens functions.

  • @AlphaCreativeSkills

    I am now happy with the performance of the 200-600 on the A1 camera. I sourced the problem down to the Bird Eye AF which sometimes struggles if the bird's eye is not clearly defined in a particular species where the eye is the same colour/tone as the surrounding feathers. If this happens just disable the eye AF and use the regular AF Area tracking without bird eye AF.

The 85mm F1.4 GM plus the 24-70 and 70-200 GM zooms probably need a V2 for sports photographers but otherwise there are plenty of lenses to choose from. Unfortunately my A1 did overheat when filming in 4K. It overheated in little over 30+ minutes of taking 4K clips: clip 1: 90 sec 10 minutes later clip 2: 30 sec clip 3: 90 sec clip 4: 90 sec 4 minutes later clip 5: 180 sec 5 minutes later clip 6: 90+ sec clip 7: 90 sec The weather report said it was 34 C and before that I was sitting in a shaded area (outside) before shooting. Also no vertical grip was used.

    Did you set your Auto Temp. OFF to the Higher option in the menus and tilt the monitor out and away from the camera body to help dissipate the heat?

    @@AlphaCreativeSkills I have not, but aren't the warnings there to protect the camera? Yesterday I got a a few heat warnings again and it was only 24 degrees outside. I'm going to try and tilt the monitor next time.

    How about a video where you compare the autofocus capabilities (real world not theoretical) of all the Sony mirrorless fill frame cameras (include APSC if you like). This is a source of endless confusion. Thank you.

    I have essentially done that with my recent camera reviews I always take each camera out on multiple assignments and then show more than a hundred ultra HD examples to showcase the performance. All the camera released after the AF tracking algorithms were improved in early 2019 are much superior to the cameras that were released prior to 2019 (this includes cameras like the A7III and A7RIII, A6300 and A6500). The only camera that could deal with these newer tracking algorithms in real time was the A9 and this saw a major update in 2019. This means the AF tracking performance of the A7C is better than the A7III and the 6400 and 6600 are better than the 6300 and 6400. All of the cameras that use Stacked sensors offer more reliable AF tracking than cameras that use the more conventional back lit sensors. This means the A1, A9II and A9 are the best cameras for AF performance - in that order.

    @@AlphaCreativeSkills This is quite helpful! I did not realize that the changes of early 2019 were so distinctive. Currently own a7iii and a7riii. Thanks!

    The retina? The retina cannot be in focus because it's inside the eyeball. The pupil and iris are what people should be wanting in focus. I'm not great with biology either but come on.

    Not a moment wasted. The evidence speaks for itself. You seemed a bit perturbed at other reviewers' experience with the camera and I can understand why, but it seemed a bit unlike you. Nice photos of dogs and birds.

    There were some reviewers who released their reviews early (for maximum views) and made errors and didn't use the camera in a sports/action context (choosing to photograph flowers and stationary pets instead). Some reviewers reviewed the camera without being fully familiar with the Sony menus. Some reviewers only showed two or three photographs captured with the camera!! My extended review had to be released early (earlier than I would have liked) to correct this misinformation. I have spoken to Sony about whether they would consider releasing the camera to experienced photographers rather than popular reviewers as the buying public need a better level of service than they are currently getting.
