A September Exotic Garden Tour at Winterton, Lincolnshire
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Today's video is a little September evening tour of Jane & Allan Scorer's fantastic established exotic garden in Winterton, North Lincolnshire. A garden that's been lovingly developed for 40 years, they open the garden for the NGS and present a fantastic mixture of exotic jungle style planting alongside a vibrant and colourful tropical style display of flowers, bulbs, rare succulents and potted plants from around the world. In this video I talk about creating a jungle or exotic garden with a structure of hardy, evergreen low-maintenance exotics, how to add personality to a garden and how you can create a tropical style garden in all kinds of garden conditions, locations and even if you don't have a lot of overwintering space.

What a dream garden. I have soo little space, time but I get to dream watching your uploads. I have 2 large palms in pots and cherish them. That’s about as tropical as I get 😅

It is indeed, apologies for my delayed reply! Great to hear you have a couple of palms and they give you joy though! I’ll hopefully have more video visits to inspirational gardens on the way this year 😃
Great video, can't believe it's a year since I visited. Some beautifully mature plants and nice to see an update

Thanks Kris, yes, it’s all knitted together from when I was there last year. That Trachycarpus in the middle with the almost 360 degree leaves especially is a beauty!
Wonderful video of an amazing garden. To have so much space to work with! The cacti you pointed out look more like euphorbias

Thank you very much, I really enjoyed my visit - it's certainly a lovely space and if you liked this one you'll also enjoy seeing Dr Simon Olpin's jungle garden I uploaded recently. You're probably right with the Euphorbias, I try my best to be accurate with IDs but it can sometimes be tricky when you're focused on filming, practice makes perfect though!
That is a dense Jungle! What a beautiful display of plants and flowers. Amazing Equisetum sp., beautiful Aloes and gorgeous Cordylin at the end, to name a few... The owners are passionate indeed! Plant what you like and experiment, great thoughts George! Take care.❤

It is indeed, I can see why it’s so popular as an open garden with a bit of something unusual. When they moved in it was pretty much a blank canvas, they’ve done an amazing job! Thanks Bernard, you too 😃

I agree about all the striking colours at this time of year, getting wrapped up and going on woodland walks is always great this time of year with all the red and yellow leaves against the green carpets of ferns

Haha yes Wayne! The tree ferns definitely look rough after this winter but the green fronds were unlikely to survive the temperatures we had. Fingers crossed they bounce back for both of us!
Thank you all for a wonderful garden walk. This is a plantsman’s garden, with a firm understanding of his goals. Good design is not what you say yes to, but what you say no to. For all the diversity, the restraint is abundantly apparent. Acer, prunus, hydrangea, magnolia, scandents like Lonicera mesnyi and Jasminum nudiflorim for height, and so much more , have a legitimate role in a sub tropical garden. The geranium looks quite at home, and that is the point. I’m sure a gardener in India would LOVE a Clematis Henryi. Alocasia Portora, and Calidora Borneo King Edgeworthia Daphniphyllum Magnolia ashei Lycoris Hippeastrum x johnsonii

Thank you very much Susan, for your kind words, wise insights and lovely plant suggestions! You are completely right, a design that works doesn't just depend on where the plants come from or the amounts of varieties used but how they tie together and the cohesive feeling created with a careful eye and clever use of colour. Jane and Allan have created a beautiful space!

Great garden tour George. Kind of what I'm trying to do mix the jungle with the tropics and throw in anything hardy that has an unusual foliage to it, just to make you stop and wonder - what's that 🤔👍

George, I love the point that you made that not every plant has to be tropical or marginally hardy. I’m in Western New York, and a lot of native plants in my area like buckeyes, Pawpaw (Asimina triloba) or Iris versicolor. Even peach trees have a nice tropical vibe.

It's a lovely garden and the plants you've identified are certainly beautiful, one of my favourite things about this garden is how they've combined the exotics with other ornamental garden plants.
Nice garden tour, as with Yorkshire Kris's tours there are the usual suspects plants repeated and these are a good foundation to start with like cordylines, bamboo, tree ferns etc. It can be tricky or difficult to get some exotic plants, I've been lucky this year, hopefully next year goes just as good.

Thanks, yes, it’s definitely a similar basis of plants although I quite liked how they’re presented in a completely different environment and mixed in with other styles too. I’m more full on jungle / tropical style but I imagine some people who watched my channel may find this kind of combo more accessible or interesting etc. fingers crossed for next year and the availability situation improves for you!

It really feels like we have missed out starting our jungle garden this year, the prices are insane now, chances of getting a dicksonia fern are zero and palms are super expensive. Do you think prices will ever recover or is this the normal now? thanks for the video, having been to Winterton many times its hard to believe this is there!

Hi, it’s definitely an amazing hidden gem in the streets of Winterton! As for your question, I definitely don’t think it’s too late, you haven’t missed out. I think a lot of the prices are here to stay or going up further, tree ferns especially unfortunately BUT so many of these plants are affordable in smaller sizes and grow incredibly quickly. When it comes to palms, I’d honestly get some young Trachycarpus hybrids from Hardy Palms (well, I have!). What you lose in instant impact you’ll get as they mature into beautiful specimens for a fraction of the cost of a large fortunei. On the plus side, a lot of the big leaved plants are more widely available than ever. If I was starting out now I wouldn’t be able to afford the plants I currently have but the garden would still be filled out well within a few years with some style tweaks and use of fast growing filler plants.
