Hi John! I believe it was actually Oscar Wilde who posited that all bad poetry was sincere, or rather more specifically that "“All bad poetry springs from genuine feeling. To be natural is to be obvious, and to be obvious is to be inartistic." The full version makes his critique clearer, but I think I nevertheless prefer the abridgement you quoted for its pithiness. Brevity, wit, etc. Anyways, I love the sentiment of this video. I'm also a firm believer in the notion that one of the greatest gifts you can give someone is your sincere and thoughtful attention. I struggle with social anxiety, and being on the other side of that guileless, open acceptance is so fulfilling, so I aspire to bring that same openness to all my relationships.

I feel the greatest part of being an artist is seeing someone visibly affected by my work. I often show my work at art fairs and festivals so I’m around when people see it. Most people seem to like it. But it just connects to a smaller number of people in a much deeper way. I live for those moments. It makes the time, fear and self doubt worth pushing through. I can’t imagine what that must feel like on such a scale you have experienced as someone making art that is read and watched by millions of people, but I’m happy for you. The Anthropocene Reviewed struck me on a deeper level. It reminded me that everything in the world, no matter how common, can be examined and appreciated. Thank you for that.

It's been a terrifying and isolating experience and the movie couldn't have come at a better time. Even though I can't go back and give my teenage self what she needed when she was undiagnosed, it was incredibly healing to see Aza go through something so similar and watch the people in her life continue to love her and care for her through her illness. I'm still scared but I feel less alone.

I've seen this book all throughout my growing up -- I remember being charmed by the title but then trying to read it when I was 13, and I just couldn't get into it. I read it last year going through one of those trialing periods of one's life, where everything is changing and I am looking for the one thing that is staying still, and this book really reached me like a mother's hug. It's really so fascinating to me how this book has traveled through time with my conscious. So much of my life keeps coming back to Nerdfighteria and it's one of the most special things to me, thank you so much.

John the movie was so good. Still a little teary. I’ve been watching these videos and listening to your and hanks podcast for like 8 years (I am 22 so that is a big big number percentage wise) and I’ve never felt so part of a community while watching a movie alone in my room. I’ve been struggling with my brain and I saw so many things I recognized while watching.

John, I can't describe how excited I am to watch this film- I have read the book a billion times and it makes me so excited to know that it truly will be amazing, even if I have to fall ill to the terrible curse called the UK and watch it over 20 days later than the rest of the planet. I am SO FREAKING EXCITED to finally be represented in an amazing piece of art made by you and the hundreds of people behind this film

Oh we can see exactly how long the bit took because you can see the seam in the composite caused by the shift in daylight, which incidentally makes the bit 10x funnier because we've all been there. Honestly I think the longer it took the funnier it would have been. :3

Hi! I have a fine arts degree and do nothing with it. Then I watched your video "Minus its Charms" and it inspired me so much! You really nailed it! I still haven't made the piece I see in my head, but I really hope I do. I'm enjoying reading Turtles All the Way Down, really identify with the OCD overthinking spiral. Thank you for being such an generous guy, John :) (somehow I commented this on the other video earlier lol oops)

A simple yet profound point. Thank you for sharing this, more people need to realise that well reception of an art is two ways and not just one. So many art pieces in the past were ignored but after time when people gave them a chance they were well recieved

So I'm in not formally educated on this, but for me art is a language. A way to convey message, tell a story, show you something, teach you something, reflect, but somehow make you engage with the piece. Whether it's music, poetry, a book, a painting, a statue, it's all about communicating. And I feel as though historically we have considered communication mostly from the active point. But seldomly the passive. As if communication equals 2 people having a monologue. While I feel the passive side has much more control over the nature of the communication. The way you listen, but also the way you percieve and interact can change the communication so much more. I think that's why most conversation techniques taught are more about listening and helping the talker convey their message more clearly. Again, not formally educated on this topic, but I am a healthcare worker with some additional communications trainings and a fascination for art.

look, no matter how good the bit was, something i deeply, deeply appreciate and look up to and envy in good artists is the willingness to make bad art, too. turns out that being scared of mistakes is antithetical to making art, bc making art is taking a risk. who'd've guessed? thank you for the vulnerability you share with us. the bit might not have been great, but you are.

I haven’t seen the movie but the ad for it was deeply profound. “You are not what you think”. I think that phrase alone is so important for a lot of people to hear and understand. I think everyone thinks things they don’t like and those things could bring a person down. I’ve struggled with it before and had to realize I’m the person I put out into the world out of all the possibilities within me. That brought me a lot of peace. Hearing it summed up so beautifully really hit me.
