What are the benifits of such a hybrid boat? What were the reasons for developing it?

As the poster has not replied, I'll suggest that it's easy to store, easy to transport on the roof rack, fun to sail, and versatile: you could remove the outriggers and mast and spend days paddling along narrow waterways.

It looks to me ( & I'm not strident on this point) that through much of this clip the boat is moving more to a close reach than a broad reach. I say this because sheeting in & hiking out against heeling moment would indicate a course more to windward than away from it.
