I was privileged to see John Prine 3 times in concert. He was an amazing storyteller. I will miss seeing him. He wrote some phenomenal songs.

For all the shortcomings of how we treat veterans, the primary problem remains, that we create so god damn MANY of them.

If this was your first time listening to this song, you are one sharp young man. At this point, John had gone through one cancer episode, and then it came back, he sang some more great songs, and then COVID killed him. The world is a fn' worse place without him in it.

Now that you've seen his serious side- you need to do Illegal Smile and the duet he was talking about at the start of the video called In Spite of Ourselves.

Dude, you could do 73 John Prine songs and be impressed with everyone of them. Truly one of America's greatest song writers. My favorite line "Ain't it funny how an old broken bottle looks just like a diamond ring."

Thanks bro! I had a feeling this would hit.. like I said the song hurts and yet I have no military connections or ties. My hole in the arm healed though. I healed where so many didn't. 😭 Every time

John Prine’s catalog is a masterclass in songwriting. His balanced mentions of coming back from war with 2 different metals (one in his knee, the other on his neck) then sums it up “with a monkey on his back 🙊.” Just, wow. 👏

Best reaction to this song I've seen! FYI: When our guys got hooked on morphine in Vietnam, then cut off, they could buy heroin -- it was really cheap there. When they got back to the US heroin was, IDK, maybe 10 - 20 times more expensive here. !!!!! So their "habit" was described by how much they spent a day on heroin. Sam Stone had "a hundred dollar habit."

Excellent analysis and reaction young man. You were right on target with your understanding. John was a unique talent and legendary songwriter. He put himself in other people's shoes and put it to music. Best example, "Angel from montgomery". 👍💕

I hope you will check out more John Prine as well as another Chicago name and Prine's goid friend, Steve Goodman. Those two could well have set Chicago on fire again. Sam Stone is one of the most "hit in thd gut" songs 10:08 Prine wrote; there are more that will paint life in a more humorous light. You won't go wrong to check them out!

I was drafted during this time, didn't believe we should be there, but took the oath In Chicago. At 20 you believe you are superman or just like me didn't understand as much as I should have known. I didn't get sent to VN but God Bless our Veterans and don't consider myself one. If anyone ever has the time read "McNamara's Folly".

This is sad. I come from Military family. My Grandfather in WW1, Father WW11, and brother Air Force. I was born when Dad was 50 yrs old. He still talk about the War til day he died. He was a drinker, but a Good Father.

Wow, similar here. My dad was in WW2 and was almost 50 when he had kids. He was one of the soldiers that helped to liberate Dachau Concentration Camp. He was never a happy guy. Wish I had understood him when he was alive.

The handles on pitchers are called "ears", it's a meaning that goes back centuries. "Little pitchers have big ears" is an old saying, my grandmother used to say it 60 years ago. It's a warning when adults are having a serious conversation to be careful what you say out loud, because the children are there and they hear everything and they understand more than you expect.

Jesus Christ died for nothing I suppose is the most devastating lyric ever written. I struggle to even type it.
