A ride on the GWR Steam Rail Motor
1908 GWR Steam Rail Motor Diagram R number 93 was running trips from Southall Platform no 1 down the Brentford goods line, by courtesy of The Great Western Society and First Great Western. Note the footprints on the roof round the
chimney, that had to be removed to get it under the bridges! Note Brunel's famous 'Three Bridges' where a road crosses the Grand Junction Canal with the railway in a cutting beneath the two. The Three Bridges bridge crossing is a unique transport intersection, that was designed and built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. It was to be his last project before he died on 15 September 1859 just two months after its completion.

🎉 happy new year my friend. Excellent video as always. Thanks for allowing me to use some of your audio in my videos. 🎉
It's funny hearing a steam train pull away but just looking at a railcar!
At last northern rails pacer replacement prototype takes to the rails, great to see this in action and on the national network too , rail motors like this operated on a railway in my part of yorkshire with old coach bodies being used as waiting rooms at halts , all gone long before i was born.
Not to mentioned also mentioned a big than you to West Coast Railway Company & Network rail who had a big part of this historical weekend
I believe this train was a victim of it's own success and has a telling story about railway services. Where introduced, it improved the frequency of services, but unlike a DMU couldn't be extended easily- a trailer car was added but made the unit underpowered- so it had to be replaced by a conventional autotrain. That a new train and service can bring new traffic is something that got lost in management, though there are examples such as the HST where that has been the case.
One thing about them: You've got a ready source of hot water for a cup of coffee on the go! LOL

yes, went on to West Drayton after this and had a ride on the Colnbrook goods branch shuttle.
Very enjoyable video. It would be great to take a ride on it, as I have been following its construction through the GWS "Echo", but now living in darkest Norfolk, it is a bit difficult. Thanks for sharing.

not fast or dramatic but an enjoyable little train, it has a bit of class about it.
WOW!!! That's so nice classic train isn't! ^_^
Good coverage, Jeff. Nice to see the interior of the RM. Had a look at the line via satellite, can only be a few miles at best. Be nice to see it back on the Looe Valley Line.

interesting interior design . Th gas lamps were installed in the Australian Tat carriages and converted to electric power in 1919the windows and doors are similar to the Tait carriages also These trains ran first steam hauled but later electrifide there are a few still preserved here
Never seen one of these before, only the streamlined diesel one. BTW, can anyone tell me what the white triangles are for that are on the sides of the rails?
The graffiti on them coaches it passed was terrible.

Gazza B That wasn’t graffiti - it was part of the livery. If you look closely, you can see that it’s identical on each car except the last. I think it’s a temporary wrap.
did it just stop half off the platform and then just leave again?
Hi Jeff ,good one ,what time was this ? My brother and his friend were on it Sat. (both ex railway),,Cheers....Dave

It was an interesting concept for the time but would seem to have been very inefficient and low on traction power. Did they build many of them??

about 99, in use from about 1903 to 1935. Lack of power when full or on gradients was an issue.
I wish it would come to the east somer set railway.............................................NATHAN
so, in u.k parlance , would she be called a steam multiple unit as she has a trailor unit ? nice film

There is no trailer. It’s a single car. At the time called a Railmotor. The same name was later given to diesel single units.
I'm sooo jealous!

A curious thing, seeing what looks like an Edwardian Pacer, but it's chuffing out steam... What kind of speed could those things get up, and how exactly would you stoke them? Is it a vertical type boiler like on some of the Scammell and Sentinel steam wagons?
@MrKnowwun
6 жыл бұрын
yes its a vertical boiler, the scammels and sentinels being a good analogy, speed wasn't great about 30mph, and with the extra coach and passengers often had to stop and brew up more steam on steeper inclines.

Intended more for commuter stopping services with very short runs between stations than any kind of longer distance work (like DMUs get put to these days) then, I suppose...
how did it feel to be passed by 125 mph hsts in this :P

More like steam. Very white for smoke.
