The interior design of this New England seaside escape-by decorating legend Nina Campbell-explores a myriad of themes: the evolution of a home, the importance of place, and the creation of an oasis amid a bustling world.
The interiors of this glorious retreat's many buildings are given the Nina Campbell treatment with vibrant palettes, sumptuous fabrics, fine antiques, and a contemporary clarity. Constructed at the turn of the last century, the core of the main house is a simple cottage overlooking a secluded cove. The pioneering couple who built it had no idea that they were creating a legacy that would become central to the lives of future generations of their family, who use the place as a retreat from busy lives in the city.
The main house evolved from that summer cottage to a larger Federal-style manse-whose recent reinvention was overseen by New York architects Ferguson & Shamamian-in a landscape with outlets for indoor and outdoor bliss. Campbell is familiar with creating backdrops for entertaining-she had previously designed Annabel’s, the renowned private members’ club in London. With a dedicated party villa, bowling alley, pool house, and tennis pavilion as well as accommodations for family and friends, the property established itself as a place for fun and relaxation. Under the spreading branches of the tree that offered shade to the original house and garden, the place has become an oasis of peace and calm away from the din of the outside world.

Thank you for showing us how to make the paper flowers. They are quite expensive and to put them in the diffuser instead of the sticks. It looks more pretty. Thank you again.

Mary, the peonies are gorgeous! What a great idea to put them in a diffuser! I enjoyed making peony bouquets for my mom and daughter in the past. I tried dipping the inner filter middles in diluted pink food coloring, graduating the color, then drying. It was a lot of extra time but was pleased with the outcome. Thank you for all your inspiring crafts you present in your videos!🌺

I’ve planted Hydrangeas in every house we’ve owned, this is our 7th ( buy old houses to fix up and resale). This summer we are supposed to move to our “Retirement” House. A little 2bdr Victorian Cottage on the most historic beautiful brick street. (our renter is leaving). Long way of saying….My husband had made me Promise No Hydrangeas. 😞. He said they are “Water Gluttons”. 😂. I’ll try, but not sure I’ll stick to that promise. 🤭

A Victorian Cottage sounds dreamy. Many of my hydrangea are underneath a canopy of well established trees and this does help them retain moisture. I bet you’ll be able to find a perfect spot for 1 or 2. 😉

Mary, Thank you from Maine. I wish I could send you a bouquet of my peonies. I have been growing them for 40 years here. Over those years the bloom time has moved up from the last week in June to the second week in June. They love our cold winters to hibernate and our sandy soil. I lived by the sea for 32 years and had hundreds of blossoms. I donated them for 6 years to a fashion show I chaired each June. I have since moved from that home about 5 miles from the sea. I started all over 12 years ago and have hundreds again. It is a labor of love for my husband who cares for these beautiful plants so that we can enjoy them and share with my friends here. They bring such joy to everyone. And I believe they are a favorite to so many as well. Thank you again.

You must have a magic touch and I'm jealous! I've seen some peony bushes grow as tall as the side of a house. That always amazes me. The climate in Wilmington is okay for rhododendrons but not peonies. There is just something happy about a peony!

I understand not having deep pockets. Some of my favorite antiques were found by the curb waiting to be disposed of. Some needed to be refinished and some just needed cleaning. For some reason, I am not embarrassed to inspect a discarded piece of furniture, as it could be a treasure just waiting to be saved..

Nina Campbell has been my favorite designer for a long time. Thank you so much! Don't get me started on the long list of why that's so! I also have fun looking back into the Colefax and Fowler history and design evolution. Inspirational Interiors by Rober Banks-Pye is also a favorite. All I need to do is leaf through their books, or a KZread video, and within 20 minutes I've gotten an inspiration and start rearranging a room, vignette, or making notes for how to freshen my next room project. I'm a new subscriber to this BEAUTIFUL channel.

I read an article in which Nina Campbell describes her first interview, as a young designer, with John Fowler. He asked her what she was learning at Design School. She answered him like an honest, 19-year-old and said, “not anything…I haven’t learned anything”. To which John Fowler laughed and said, “well good, I want you to quit, and I’ll teach you everything you need to know.” That’s one of the coolest stories I’ve read lately!

This review and what John Fowler said makes me realize I don’t know what the “correct night stand height” is. Would that be the table top should be the same height as the mattress top? And for that matter, how tall should lamps be on the bedside? I always just eyeball it, it if looks right it’s right..that not being the same as feels right or is correct. ☺️

I have tried to figure that out. The book says nothing in much detail about the owners. The cove, however, does remind me of Walker's Point in Kennebunkport. One of the monogrammed pillows had W as the last name initial and another bed linen was monogrammed with "DC". It's a mystery wrapped in a quandary.

In the book she refers to herself as “English” as she was born and raised on Sloane Street in London, England. I don’t know much about her personally, I was just relaying what was presented in the book. Thanks for the additional information.
