I just love JRPGs, and YS VIII is such a great one

Ys lacrimosa of Dana is one of my favorite games ever in my top 10 actually if i have one, the story and characters are memorable and even a year later after i finished it i still feel the bitter sweet ending whenever i think about it.

I’m the same Jim. I loved that game. The ending was so well done and memorable.

I just Discovered this games. Finished origin a couple days ago and now playing Chronicles. Loving every second of them. My god the music!!! Bump system is weird at first but becomes second nature fast.

I loved origins too. I think you’ll like Felghana. It’s similar gameplay to origin but I preferred the story

@@Krazybone if You like JRPGs, 109% YES! I don't like JRPGs that much and here i am, just about to finish Ys II (the combat system is completly diferent from other games but still amazing) and looking forward to play the next in the series.

Nice retrospective. One correction though, Adol does speak in one game. In Ys III: Wanderers from Ys (only in text, but still). And it was a mistake, to put it mildly. He also speaks in the Japanese only PS2 remake of Ys III, even with voice acting! And finally he also spoke in the anime adaptation of Ys 1 and 2, but having a silent protagonist in an anime would've been weird lol.

Ys by far is my favorite Falcom series! Unfortunately Falcom was exclusively a PC developer for so long that why the studio or their games didn't go big as the other studios who started making RPGs at the time even if Falcom was the first to start making RPGs in Japan! The game port were most of the time handled by an external developer! Since the first the Ys on Master System it became one of my favorite series!! Unfortunately the onlt way to play the sequels was emulations until the PSP and Vita!!

It found a great home on Sony’s handhelds. Given how popular the Switch is in Japan maybe it will move more to Switch going forward if they see the biggest success there.

I've only played YS Origin so far but, that game so far has made me a big fan of the series. I also have YS 8, 9, and memories of Celcetta.

This is a great series, with some of the best soundtracks in videogames. I think Seven's soundtrack stuck out the most to me, Desert of Despair is still my favorite track out of all the games.

Y's VIII is my first journey into the franchise. It took me a while to get used to it (I'd beat Trails of Cold Steel before). I liked the characters so much that tears came to my eyes and the end.

Ys chroncles on the psp is my favorite and first ys ever💙

All of the Ys games have contemporary console releases. This includes the famicom, master system, turbografx, SNES, genesis. There's been at least one release in each console generation. since the 8 bit era.

Just checked the price for Ys I & 2 Chronicles for the PSP on ebay and decided to collect another complete series for the systems I own.

I think playing these games on PC is the best way to go, even for Ys VIII after several patches from what I've heard. I've finished all of the 2010 releases, but VIII is my favorite. Cannot wait for IX.

It’s a really tough one to find, especially at a decent price. If you have a switch you could consider grabbing it for switch. It has the extra content which is a plus although I personally prefer playing on my Vita

A really nicely put together video. I’m really looking forward to Ys IX but can’t decide whether to get it for Switch or PS. Having VIII and Celceta now on PS I may get it for that. Ooh, just one thing, and I think as you are a massive fan of the series I should say, the S is actually pronounced like an S and not a Z (think Peace not Please).

I’m grabbing Ys IX for the PS4 first and maybe switch. I’ve got the collectors edition ordered for switch but I’m not sure I want to keep the order yet. Are you sure on the pronunciation? I’ve always heard others say it like “ease.” I’m going to ask around!

@@2old4gaming Cool. As I know you’re a fan, I wanted to say. By the way, have you tried the demo of IX? While I generally dislike demos that throw the player in mid game without explanation, I thought this demo was particularly poor. It just seems so different (in a bad way) than VIII and Celceta. Also, what’s with the camera controls? What did you think of it?

I’ve not played any yet 🙈 but picked up Origins digitally cheap as a cross buy recently and am hunting high and low for MoC and LoD physically at a decent price currently haha 😂

I've played I and II, celceita, and origins. I have all on Vita except 6 because it's not on the Vita store. I've only beaten I though on the TG-16 Mini. I started II and forgot where I left off

I honestly never noticed the missing parts from ys8 until i played it on the switch years later i was like wait when did this happen lol still a great game for the vita regardless

I started it on switch but didn’t get far so I’m not sure what I’m missing. The original game felt complete anyway so I wasn’t too worried about replaying on switch. I will one day but there’s too much to play right now so it’s hard to justify replaying a 50hr game

I literally just bought all of the Ys games for my own Vita! And honestly, I'm having a blast with it. It's obviously not the most ideal way to play them. None of them can run 60fps, Memories of Celceta has no option for Japanese voices, and Ys 8 has a TON of features missing on the Vita that was added in later versions. But honestly, it's just really cool to be able to take these games on the go.

I played the Ys series on my Vita from the first Chronicles to Celceta back to back. I enjoyed the bumpy games (1 & 2), I loved the one-player aRPG titles, especially Origin (which is my favorite) but I'm really disappointed in the later ones. I finished Celceta just for the sake of ending it. I don't know if it is the complexification of gameplay or the characters but it didn't click with me as the Felghana or Origin did. I still have to play Lacrimosa of Dana. I'm hearing a lot of praise but I'm really anxious before starting it.

You forgot mentioning that Ys VI Ark of Napishtim was released on PSP. My favs are Ys Lacrimosa of Dana and Ys Seven. I have played all the Ys of psp and ps vita, and wish I could play Ys IX on my Sony´s powerful handeld.

So Napishtim was on PSP but not on PSN so it can’t be played on Vita. I wanted to focus on the Vita Ys games for the video. I wish we were getting Ys IX on vita too. I’m hoping since they’ve made the jump to console it will be more polished and impressive

Yeah it’s really expensive these days. It won’t be going on sale on PSN again on vita so it’s better to buy it if you want it or you can grab it on switch next time it’s on sale. The switch version has the advantage of having extra content

oh my, the nostalgia is strong on this one,....this video reminiscent of the reason i picked up Vita at the time, alongside Ys Memories of Celceta Silver Anniversary Edition,....actually YS The Ark of Napishtim (6th franchise) do come out on PSP, but its not available on digital format and also considered to be one of the worst port in the game that rather play it on other platform (PC,PS2) instead,.....

I want to begin playing the Ys Series, but I don't know where to start because the franchise it's very big and the game's order isn't very specific with a lot of different names instead of just numbers to each sequel. What I know - and people told me - is that those games aren't like the Persona ones, u can't simply catch one an play, otherwise you'll miss a lot of content from the story, but I also don't want to begin with old/very old games just to understand the story. WHERE I SHOULD START TO PLAY THIS CORRECTLY?

So really I’d recommend playing them in the order of release for story (which is the same order I covered the games in this video) but I wasn’t a fan of Ys 1 and 2’s bump system so if you’re the same as me then don’t let that put you off from the others because it’s totally different from the rest of the series. Save Ys 8 for last as it’s the best and it’s hard to go back to Ys 7 or Celceta after playing 8.

I started with ys memory of celcetia , and I personally think it has a better story that ys8,I need to get back and play ys origin

@@2old4gaming the story is very simple compared to the first 4 ys games the music is average it gets the job done the game is little easy and has a very slow pace. Overall it's a mediocre experience the only great part is towards the ending so you are not missing much if you didn't play it

Napishtim was on PSP but it’s not on PSN so it can’t be downloaded to Vita. I wanted to focus on Ys games playable on Vita

Ys did not debut on PSP, there´s Ys as early as the Master System and Famicom

I think the drama with the Vita version, and that's infuriating is that in Japan, the Vita version came way earlier than the PS4 version, while here the Vita version was released TOGETHER with the PS4 and PC versions, AND it was sold by the same price. So you would be paying the same amount for less content, while in Japan at least since the Vita version was released earlier they would be getting that version cheaper when the Ps4 version was released. I think that was a very jerk move from Nisa, I'm glad the game came to the Vita, it's the best on the system, but I'm annoyed that you had to pay so much for something that had at least 20% less content. That's why the vita version should cost 20 bucks less in my view. But that's me. The game is still incredible, even today.

I always thought that the Ys VIII original translation being bad was blown way out of proportion. It really wasn't that bad and I've seen a lot worse.

I agree Dusty. I didn’t think it was too bad. I remember reading some silly lines but nothing that ruined the game for me. It seemed like a big deal to others so thought it needed mentioning

I like the YS series but I can't stand mute protagonists. I always found YS games fan but most games are way formulaic from a story perspective: MC is shipwrecked somewhere, an ancient evil returns, a random girl falls for the MC etc.

Ummm.... Not once has Ys ever had a version release on PC first. It's always a port from a console if it gets to PC. Unless you count Ys I&II Complete, which was a remake. Eternal was a port of the PSP version, which released several months prior. Ys has NEVER been PC exclusive. Also, Ys VI was released on PSP, so should be perfectly playable on the Vita. *edit- OK, so Ys Origins was PC exclusive for a while, I'll admit I was wrong.

I’m pretty sure 3,4 and 6 were released PC first. Ys 6 was on PSP but not on the PSN store. If you hack your vita you can play it but I was referring to games that are officially available

​@@2old4gaming Ys III, PC-88, huh... guess it was technically a computer first, though my understanding is the PC-88 was, in use, just a slightly more functional Commodore 64, so an argument for it being a gaming system _might_ work... but not worth it, lol Ys 4 was originally released on both SNES and PC Engine (as 2 different games from 2 different developers). No PC involved. As to Ys VI... I'm actually a bit shocked there was a JP PC version a whole 2 years before the PS2 release. I thought the PS2 version was the original... Ys VI isn't on the PSN store? Odd. It runs fine on my PSTV (which yes, was modded like 5 min after I got it, lol), so not a compatibility issue...
