A Quiet Work Day in My Life as an Archivist (no background music) 🎄 Vlogmas ep. 6

Welcome to a slow day in the archives! I decided to make this a quiet vlog with no background music, but with talking of course because I always having something to say. Since it's my first time making this type of video I'm a little nervous because it feels uncomfy! I hope you guys enjoy watching. I feel like you can work right alongside me hehe.

This is so satisfying to watch and listen to. My maternal grandfather passed away recently and he was the primary family history person. He'd done a fair amount of work online, but only on the family history portion. I have one plastic tote and six cardboard boxes full of photos, paper genealogy, journaling, and odds and ends going back to the mid-to-late 1800s, which was in a jumbled mess spanning several drawers of a dresser and a closet. I myself have done family history work since 2015, and have been journaling since 1998-ish, and was given all of my grandfather's work mentioned above. I managed to curate it all into a loose arrangement that made the most sense, and recently began the painstaking effort of digitizing the entire work. Watching how you proceed with the ins and outs of the great work you do gave me a great insight into best practices for my own endeavor, and how to best go about this. Thank you for sharing your passion with us!

wow! thank you for sharing your grandfather's background and the work he was dedicated to. It makes me happy to hear you're carrying on the role of family historian/archivist and taking steps to preserve and digitize the material. glad this video was helpful in those ways too :)

OMG! I think once upon a time, maybe 2 years ago now, I came across a vlog of your similars to yours when I was choosing my major - and now I work as an intern in the archives at a State secretariat! There's a lot of differences between the life of an archivist there in the states, and here in Brasil - I'm technically a record manager, really - but at the time, your vlog helped me settle into the decision of the course i was choosing, and I can't thank you enough for it :D

Sheila! This was fun to see. I'm about to start processing my very first collection. It's a terrifyingly huge donation from a sorority at our college, and I only have my coursework (and reference sources) to get me through, since we haven't had an archivist in a couple of years. Wish me luck. 😬 (I cackled at your very necessary disclaimer about not needing gloves.)

I’ve been researching archival jobs, I live in California so the job opportunities are uhhhhhh looking limited and competitive but it’s a field that I’m super interested in! Your vlogs are not only informative but weirdly like…. Comforting? I’m trying to take some classes before applying for my MLIS, but I think I’m going to reach out to some local museums and historical societies and see if they need any volunteers to help archive materials 💕 best wishes to you for 2024

Thank you for the kind words! It's rough out there in terms of job openings. Reaching out to museums directly is a great way to see what's available. A lot of the times smaller places won't even list a job posting because they just don't have the staff or time to do it. Where I work we typically hire by word of mouth and referrals. The assistant we hired in late 2022 emailed us out of the blue and we hired her for 30 hours a week. Good luck with your searches!

I totally feel you, I also get great comfort out of doing things that are normal tasks in life, for example taking care of myself in my morning bathroom routine, sitting down and having a cup of coffee while I knit. In such a fast paced life, it's almost like we have to get permission from "someone" so that we have the time to take care of ourselves....and when we just give ourselves permission, little things like making your lunch, so that you can be nourished for the day is almost like having a million dollars in the bank. I was so happy that you brought out another archive video, I love seeing how you also are writing things down and making lists. Sometimes I think I am the only person who makes lists, but I guess when it comes down to it, in the world of an archivist, that's what we do! HA! If it also fits your KZread creating process I think videos with B-Roll or videos with voice overs are great. This way I can hang out with a knit and cup of tea while I watch your video and not have to read at the same time and it's nice to watch a video where there is sound in the background. Looking forward to your next video. Until then, be well :)

thank you for the lovely comment! I looove what you say about feeling like you have a million dollars, simply from having a moment to pack your lunch. And YES, my life at work revolves around lists and post-it notes hahah so I'm glad I'm not the only one either. Thank you for your video ideas and feedback. I've been thinking of other ways to film and doing b-roll with a voiceover is something I'd like to try more.

I want to ask you some questions please : - Did you take a permission to film at your work ? - The archives that you do in your company what do they use for ? Is it a private company or governmental one ? - What the profit from these archives ? I know maybe a silly question but why and what do they profit from it not financially of course ?

excuse how long it took for me to reply! 1) My job is very low key. I have a good relationship with my boss and she doesn't care if I film, as long as I'm not sharing sensitive information of course. I usually only film when nobody else is working, which has been hard since we've hired more people lol 2) We are a non-profit affiliated with a church organization based in the U.S. 3) We have an endowment and receive the majority of our funding from synods within our service area. We also receive money when a church closes and sends us their records. We also receive smaller donations from folks who support our archives. I cannot speak for corporate, for-profit archives as I have only ever worked for non-profits.

@@SheilaJoy No it's ok my dear Sheila, thank you for these lovely informative answers, here in my grand hospital it's not allowed to film unless we ask for a permission from general administration. I want to film my work as a medical archivist but maybe I ask again.

I wanted to go to university to be an archivist, but I am poor nobody is helping me and free tutions fees are only in Sweden....in the rest of europe you need money, to do goverment debt, but if you are alone it s fucking hard , it s the perfect career for people who like to read or in general misantrops

Here in the U.S. where I live this field is very inaccessible to many people and I completely understand where you're coming from. I do advocate for people to try and gain hands-on experience in the field who cannot afford to go to school, but I know that's not always feasible either. There are archives educational resources online, many for free. You can also earn a certificate that is lower in cost. Not sure how it is for European countries, though.

My biggest advice to anyone interested in the field is to gain experience in an archives or museum setting. If you can show an employer you have knowledge and experience, they are more likely to consider you over another candidate. Best of luck!
