A Quick Review: Nagaoka MP-150 Phono Cartridge

Музыка

If it's one thing we love it's our Nag carts, and this cartridge upgrade is the latest addition to our audiophile setup. For the last couple of weeks, I've been gradually breaking this bad boy in for this review. The Nagaoka MP-150 is the third line in the nag cart releases, one level above the MP-110. Although with as great as this thing sounds, it feels like it's a few steps above. Is it worth the price point though? Watch as we take the next step into our audiophile experience and see what I think about the MP-150 phono cartridge.
The opinions expressed in this video are of my own volition, and the verbiage therein is in reference to the 'in-person' experience that I have received while listening through this cartridge. I'm already in the process of putting together a comparison video to test the sound quality between the MP-110 and the 150 which will be released soon. In the meantime enjoy this quick review of the 150, and thank you for your support!

I feel the Chris Gorman version of The Pink Panther that I uploaded yesterday sounds really good on it, but I'm really looking forward to also getting some more Jazzy style music out there with it. Very pleased with it so far, I appreciate your support as always!

A wonderful review, and demonstration! I like your review of this MP-150 Cartridge, and it goes well mounted on the Technics Headshell. Thumbs up, easily. I may eventually get the Nagaoka MP-150 Phono Cartridge; it is worth the higher price. I've done research, including the download of the brochure that explains, and illustrates the design, and engineering of the Nagaoka Moving Permalloy Cartridge; made in Japan. Plenty of very good reviews, and for the most part many positive things are presented, and explained about the Nagaoka MP-150 Cartridge on the Internet. Furthermore, the MP-150 has a hardened aluminum Cantilever, and an elliptical nude stylus; a bit beyond the previous version model of the MP-110 in the range, by the way. And this MP-150 Cartridge is even more expensive up here in Canada, but it is worth the high price.🔉🎵🎶

You'll get *A LOT* more hours out of the 2M Bronze for sure! That's a pretty serious cart in terms of cost. Make sure if you do get it, that it's all for the right reasons. Heck, the MP-200 and up is overpriced in my opinion, but that's just me. Once you get into the range that you are, you're crossing a pretty deep thresh hold in terms of cost so just don't purchase something that ends up giving you buyers remorse later.

I agree! Better built turntables with better cartridges = better sound! My technics SL-1200GR didn't come with a cartridge so I got the ortofon 2m bronze. So my initial investment was pretty expensive. But I was replacing a 1983 technics and I wanted another technics. The technics 1500C came out after I got the 1200GR or I would have gone with it. What I like about the Ortofon carts you can upgrade to the black without having to change out the cartridge. Ortofon says 1,000 hours without any sound degradation. Keep spinning Chad!!

Holy cow 1,000 sounds like you're getting your money's worth! I cannot tell you how much I have gone back and forth over and over again on the Ortofon carts, and specifically I kept looking for people's thoughts on the 2M Bronze. Every time I get close to buying one, I keep running into people on forums and KZread saying not to go with the 2M series. I can't speak to it 100% because I've never heard them in person, but to me the 2M Bronze puts out such elegant resonance and I'm so confused about people downplaying it. If you could provide an argument against that, I would love to hear your thoughts on that, because I would LOVE to buy the 2M Bronze even as expensive as it is, it just seems like a really good purchase. Do you have anything you don't like about it?

They also make a plug and play cartridge. I had mine done and mounted to the technics headshell by Hi Fi Heaven when I ordered my technics from them or I might have tried it. The cart you got gets alot of great reviews. So enjoy. Ortofon says 1,000 hours without sound degradation with PROPER CARE!! So it'll vary I think there saying.

Maybe someday I'll get the 2M Bronze, but for now I'm really looking forward to getting some new stuff of the MP-150 out on our channel. A cartridge huh? If we reached 50K before this year is out then yes, we would possibly consider something like that, and maybe a nice turntable if we reached 100K. We're definitely going to have a contest though for our most recent subscriber increase, by giving out a record valued at 35.00. However, we're trying to figure out how we want to do it. We've never implemented a contest before, so we're just trying to figure out if we should be limiting it to just subscribers, nation-wide vs. world-wide? Most of the people that we've gained are international so we're wanting to have one really soon, we're just wanting to be considering as many people fairly as we can.

  • @cjsvinyl

    4 жыл бұрын

No, it's not a bad cartridge at all actually. ;) I researched a lot of carts, and definitely had my eye on a few AT carts including the AT-VM95ML and the only complaint I have toward any of the Nag carts is how each of them have a recommended lifespan of 150 to 200 hours. That just doesn't seem like very much especially for the ones higher up like the MP-150, 200, 300, and 500. The sound I'm getting out of them reminds me why I go with Nagaoka. That could change in the future, as I'm considering ClearAudio carts too.

There's no doubt that the MP-200 is a considerably larger upgrade for many carts, not just the MP-110. Thanks so much for the review and info! The ASAP replacement after 150-200 hours seems odd though. Is that just a strict quality control thing to make sure even the smallest amount of audio degredation won't affect performance? Realistically, would it really be noticeable if one keeps using the same stylus after, say, 500 hours? It's not like the stylus will wear down like a #2 pencil, right?

  • @cjsvinyl

    @cjsvinyl

    Жыл бұрын

150 - 200 was listed as Nagaoka's _recommended_ amount of hours. While I would anticipate those numbers have been used as the threshold before degradation begins to set in, I would still be cautious not to take it too far passed that timeline. Styli do wear down, and the more the stylus wears down, you do begin to risk swifter surface damage to the LP, not to mention more noticeable static. However, that can be significantly reduced with a deep clean system such as a vinyl vac system.

I think that stylus lifespan number is a typo. A diamond styli, when properly aligned at a reasonable VTF, being used on clean vinyl and properly brushed should last 800-1000 hours before wear is a concern.

They're all the same setup. There should be a small tooth on the rear edge of the headshell which aligns with a small fitted gap inside the tonearm. You just align both of those and gently slide in, and then gently rotate the small spinner with the grooves and that will pull the headshell the rest of the way in place. Afterward, you need to ensure that you have calibrated your tonearm with the counter weight. The process is very straight forward. Just make sure you are gentle.
