A Quick Guide to Canyoneering Water Canyon near Zion National Park, Utah

Recently, our cousin Anh introduced us to the canyoneering route through Water Canyon near Zion National Park. We’ve done the hike here but we haven’t got a chance to rappel down this beautiful canyon yet. It’s not hard to see why Water Canyon is one of Anh’s favorite canyons. Besides being a great beginner technical canyon, it also has a little bit of everything from big rappels (170ft), swimming pools, narrow slots, and beautiful scenery. One interesting thing about this canyon is that the approach trail runs along the side of the canyon on the way up. This gives you multiple points to drop in or opt out of different rappels. Water Canyon also makes a great alternative for canyoneering near Zion National Park if you can’t get permits there.

This video is nicely put together. It's so informative. Most other videos I see have nothing on this. Great video. Keep it up.

Sweet! I've guided that canyon several times and it's my favorite! You can set up a guided rappel on the last 120 footer, there is a ring bolt on the far side of the beach past the water.

Very nice video and glad you enjoyed it when it was dry. Now get in there when it is wet and there is some flowing water. One comment about the long rappel at the end which you said had a sharp edge at the top. I notice a lot of the people jumping down the rappel and was wondering if the rope was going across that sharp edge. If it was then jumping would not be good for the rope. IMHO

Thank you for your comment! The edge is sharp in the way that it is 90 degree angle, not so much sharp enough to cut the rope. I guess I should have use a different word!! Definitely not trying to damage the rope. 😊. We can't wait to go back when there's more water!

Enjoyed canyoneering down Water Canyon in mid May had a good amount of water. Several chest deep wades and a few swims. No problem going through the pot holes if you don't mind getting wet. No wet suit needed on a warm day.

Those grooves at the top pf the rappel aren't from the rope, are they?? Any theory about how tis gnarly real estate was formed. Enjoyed to the MAXX,

Unfortunately they are caused by the ropes. We do everything we can to prevent erosion, but sandstone wears away so easily and after a couple years of canyons being run over and over it is going to happen. Isn't it a beautiful area up there? So glad you enjoyed the video 😎
