Question for Viewers: Same side gang or opposite side gang?

My coach definitely preferred same side. But I'm bad and my body does what it wants. If I can get a block, I'll take it

Generally opposite. It depends on how I’m countering. If it’s a parry, I usually use same side, but opposite side for blocks.

He is really good. He has put a lot of time and thought into each thing that he does.
Same side has certain benefits. Specifically, their hand can't simultaneously be striking and defending, so they're open on the side they're striking with, so it makes sense to attack them where they're open. Also, since they just attacked, you're unlikely to get hit with a powerful counter to that side. However, countering from the opposite side means you can shift your weight and throw more of your body mass into the punch, so it'll be more powerful.
Love both of y’all’s work. It’s no surprise that you both looked like you had a lot of fun on this collab. Your knowledge, coaching skills, and complementary energy all make for a great dynamic. Hope to see more collabs with Jared in the future!
Fantastic coaching! So much to unpack here!
Yes. A bucket of knowledge. Excellent. Thank you.
Congratz on 400k mike 💪💪💪💪
Jared and his brother are amazing. I love their content/knowledge
50/50. Depends on my balance, head movement, yada yada. It was great seeing both of you at hard ready. Great coaches with two very different styles.
Point is, opposite side could react faster. If you receive strong punch, you first need to absorb it, ready your arm and hit. But in the same motion, you could both absorb the hit and deliver it with opposite. Now, for sure, if you block with front, distance is further if you hit with back(unless if you are slugging in the infight). But def depends on the situation, i could see myself receiving fake jab, or weaker jab and doing gazelle with my front(and even that might be risky since it could be a trap for the opponent's cross).
Great stuff..totally makes sense especially being of short stature. Video well done!!
It really depends on how you have your upper body loaded up and which way you plan on going with your bodyweight and how the enemies punches are coming in. I usually prefer same side in quick responsive balance stance, or squared off balance stance with constant forward invasion cutting off their escape footwork and try to jam them up. Its super important to learn switch stance so you can invade and clam people up when they run.
Love the detail! Wow!
This is one of the best discussions on martial arts I ve ever see
Great explanation. Thank you for sharing.
I’m an opposite hand guy, but I see the great value in doing same side now! Thanks for the great video!
I love the concept of range and catch counters. Good stuff. Yup and the sense of using your eyes or feeling.
Fun and educational. Gotta love it!
Mike's over here trying to become a Jedi
The way Mike responds to the body jab is actually similar to how MIkey Garcia tends to. The elbow parry(?) loads it up well into a left hook or a jab/left straight.
Great video! As a beginner boxer I learned a ton from this
Awesome vid guys! Thanks.
Same side. Nice video helped me very much
this was great fellas. thank you.
I like that idea of closing the eyes to internalize these blocks and counters. Nice! 🤔
Love this coach nice work 💯🥊💙🙏🏾
Learning from a pro boxer? That’s awesome 👏🏼! Fantastic! Marvelous!
Same side. Usually, they drop that arm after a connection that leaves the head open. But this video have some new insights
Really, again, so good explained! Thanks for sharing :)
He is a good coach, but also seems like a pretty chill dude.
This is awesome!!! I follow him on Instagram and didn’t realize Mike knew him. I even tagged Mike in one of his posts!!!
Congrats on 400k mike!
Same side to rotating opposite, the iron mike tactic fires right after, stiffing the op out across both chins, tucking into the countering arm while high guard the same side. Brace for impact and rotate the hook into a stiff op arm. Tactic was again used by the iron mike.
I love same side counters simply because it makes fighting less stressful, you kinda get the info from your attacker when and where to hit. Makes thinking about defense less stressful too, atleast for me.
I never really thought about it cause I constantly train evasion over blocking but instinctually... I do prefer to counter off a block with the same side
Great video!
same side because that's where the opening is. but sometimes it's hard to get enough power out of it. so we learn standard combos from a block or slip
Good stuff thank you
Amazing video.

Both! Ranged shots higher up for me it's easier to do opposite side, one side block or roll then other side strike. For body shots the elbow blocking to the ribs or abdomen in a way is like a chamber for a uppercut reply for me.
Been seeing you with this guy on ig since I follow em. I was surprised to know you knew em when I started seeing you on his ig and now I see him on your page. Thats dope
If your in a dutch style gym you will see same side, just like you are dutch blocking a kick. If your boxing you will see more opposite side rolling counters. In kick fighting the hook, kick or hook knee is a staple. If you roll to counter with the opposite side it becomes easy to rool into an incoming kick or knee
First time i saw "reaction punches" was from an old Kenny Weldon video on KZread 8 years ago. He was teaching same side back then as well.
There is a traditional practice in eastern arts called sticking. I usually close my eyes when doing that. Makes it way easier if I don't focus on what I see. Makes feeling way easier.
I did learn same side and opposite side from my coach. My coach trains fighters in Mayweathers gym. And learned from Mayweather Sr. I don't remember about the block from the body punch, except we did learn to parry the jab.
I personally do opposite side in muay thai sparring. I think it's because I try to almost grab the back of my head (rather than keep the glove at my forehead) when blocking hooks to eliminate the gap that an ungloved fist could fit through and makes a solid "arm shield". As a result I find the same side punch is more difficult to throw compared to when I use a standard, touch-forehead high guard. When I do this more exaggerate block I tend to rotate a little so my guard/arm shield thing can cover both hooks and straight punches on the side I'm defending, which nicely loads up my other arm for the reaction punch. Blocking the way I do isn't really necessary since we train with boxing gloves, but a good habit for self defense. You see it a lot in muay thai styles from before the introduction of boxing gloves.

That sounds scarey. I think if I saw someone grabbing the back of their head to do an elbow block id power straight the back of their elbow to stretch their tricep and armpit shoulder muscles out of wonk. I always put my palm half on my forehead and half of it over my temple and then flare the pointy part of the elbow to meet the punch.
@juliansanderson839
2 жыл бұрын
@@dirtpoorchris I guarantee you that tactic won’t be effective. It would take several full commitment haymakers from the worlds hardest hitters to even come close to damaging the blocking arm in any meaningful way. You’d be lucky if it worked in a sanctioned fight, and that’s after rounds of losing the fight to be sidetracked by their guard. Twenty shots to the arm isn’t worth a single shot to a vital point.
@dirtpoorchris

@@juliansanderson839 If someone has their knee check in the wrong position with their leg lifted you can literally kick stomp kick the top of their shin and push their femur back and possibly disolocate it. You can do this with the arm socket too if the arm is too much lifted and blocks the wrong way way too high above the head kinda like when grabbing the back of your own head.
@Laneganification
2 жыл бұрын
@@dirtpoorchris I've been trying to see how you would do this to my arm and I can't seem to make it work. I think I might have explained poorly and made you picture my elbow pointing straight up in the air? In reality, the elbow points nearly horizontally and across the line between me and my opponent. So to hurt my shoulder and tricep by punching the back of my elbow you'd have to feint a hook and then (because of the angle of my arm) use your OTHER arm to uppercut/hook the back of my elbow diagonally and force it more than 90 degrees upward before I feel a stretch in my muscles. Which seems unlikely. Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you mean. Either way, it hasn't ever come up as an issue in sparring so far. An easier way to take advantage is to feint a hook and then "GO TO THE BODY", but yeah every block leaves you open somewhere.
@dirtpoorchris

ya I was kinda imagining it being too high in the air
I do same side most often but I do agree that you need both
reminiscent of the Great Kenny Weldon! thanks for the discussion
That was cool 😎
Mike I'm loving the collabs. You are the nick fury of KZread martial arts.
We are taught same side for shots that are caught early or short, opposite side if they are reaching
The thumb thing seemed kinda silly but I started testing jamming my thumb back with the elbow block and you can definitely jam their thumb back into its own socket but its kinda hard to catch it on right on the 2nd thumb knuckle and get the jamming leverage but definitely doable. Im like Mike my initial instinct is to same side block and wave the hit away and then punch after stealing the inside arm gates.
I do both but I prefer cross side on most but I do the same side more on the high guard.
Effective defense as a beginner can be challenging as the action you are in can be fast and punishing. I work on defense way more than offense. I then do a lot of counter punching against partners that are faster, or more skilled than I am. The first thing I was taught when I went to learn boxing was a lot of defense and footwork. When I first started my partner would go right for the face as much as possible and I had to hold up my left arm like a shield. I do the opposite side because of the partners I had, since the majority would go aggressively to the face.
Icy Mike giving me those Rocky 1 vibes ! C'mon champ !
Oh man, broke that 400k mark! Congratulations
these are great... only issue with countering with the same hand its easier to read I believe 🤔
Trained opposite side in kickboxing and same side in boxing. Were different coaches with different backgrounds though. I instinctively use opposite side more often (bc I started with kickboxing) but land a lot more punches when concentrating on same side attacks.

I commented the drill will likely not hurt different disciplines, but as you add in more variables, things change. What is textbook in boxing, may not be text book in thai where you can strike with anything.
Honestly I would have to stay for me personally I could go either way because it all depends on the Heat of the Moment regardless if it's a match or somebody just starts attacking out of the blue or something like that you just never know so I could be same side I could be opposite side it all depends on my mentality at the moment of being attacked or hit I don't train anymore because I'm tired and busy with work but I will say that in an altercation is very important to be trained and ready
hooks are hard to counter man. I got a little trick where I footwork in and land my forearm or wrist on their inner elbow area and they cant hook but sometimes It misses or they end up angling their body and jamming your fingers (without gloves), or you miss the stuffer palm and get hooked.
I try to do same side for the blocks to the body but when I’m in the ring I tend to just use my lead hand side for all blocks to the body lol
I was not trained to do same side or opposite side. We always practiced to throw whichever shoulder was further back or cocked and ready to go.

Hands are faster than eyes. Thats a true statement.
🔥🔥🔥
I think I do opposite side more but sometimes do same side. probably like a 60/40 split
That was good. I had trouble following on the first view, and I had to watch it a couple times more. But I did like how you disagreed and kept talking through it even though it. There were times where your style of communication was cutting off Jared before we got his complete sentence. The one thing I really liked about JKD is the guys that I met doing that is that they talked about feeling things out in the context of defense first and then reacting from there. I think that's why I get a kick out of Light Burley and his style of 52 Blocks and how that style starts with blocks and moving with them into counters.
Idea: if you could get in Lyteburly (52blocksinfo) on the channel he would be great to talk about bareknuckle blocking, plus alot of the blocks you implement yourself and how 52 teaches them. If you got him in a room with Jared and had them talk anything that would be a Harvard course in pugilism
Great video good sir. I am going to check his channel out and subscribe
I feel like it depends for me, if I want to circle out or move my opponent I like same side, if I've trying to clean their clock I like opposite side
I feel like opposite side is more effective in terms of being more of a significant strike. Say if you block a strike one side and roll with the shot, you’re already loaded up for that power shot off the opposite side. Could see both ways being effective in their own ways though.
Catch and shoot with same hand / counter with opposite hand. Pretty standard stuff.
Would the side you block the body jab change if you’re looking to grapple so you can get to the opponents outside and grab them? Or is it better to shoot off that counter punch?
Same side opposite side depends on how you have your momentum in that moment.

Same side
Hey mike, love the content, my one critique is to let your guest talk alittle more since we already see you talk in your other vids
When I was a kid I was a am skateboarder and every trick I learned, I learned switch. I tell myself I prefer both lol
Please Mike you need to do some videos with Tony Jeffries! IMO one of the best teachers in boxing
I find myself using the type where you block with one hand, and strike with the hand that isnt occupied. Though like Jared says here; you do need BOTH depending on the situation. And my regular sparring partner is 6 foot 4 and 240lbs lol. I myself am 6'0 even, and around 190lbs or so(I SHOULD weigh about 175-180lbs; I'm overweight right now). I have a massive experience and skill advantage over him; but he's not exactly new himself and has been training about 2 to 3 years or so; he cant handle me when I get close but hes VERY GOOD at keeping his distance using his jab and teep. He has a very powerful right cross the strongest I've ever faced, too. I can't ever slack on my defense against this guy. Damn I wish I was as tall as my brother was(he was 6'4 as well). Because I am usually sparring guys much bigger than myself, my style developed into one where I'm doing a TON of forward leaping motions when I begin a combination; or for single shot leaping hooks. Its less of a leap and more like I just step really hard and glide across the floor quickly throwing my shot. When I spar someone my own height and size, or even someone smaller than me; its quite a bit different, FAR easier in every way. But because its muay thai I have more options even against tall guys like my regular sparring partner. And even vs him I usually out score him in sparring, and def land more head shots. I do not "win" every match though, far from it. Its about 70-30 in my favor; and perhaps lately its even as high as 60-40 because my stamina has gotten worse(my own damned fault, that one). And some days he "wins" more of our sparring matches than I do. It can be incredibly frustrating sparring someone whose several weight classes bigger than him and 4 inches taller with a proportionately greater reach. You gotta be WAY MORE ACTIVE in those types of matches. And to be more active requires more stamina than the other guy..
same side definitely
the intro: "Real QUIck"
I always liked opposite side because I tend to crazy monkey block for hooks. That means my lead hand is way behind my head and I'm blocking with my entire arm. No real way to same side hook with that hand with any kind of speed. But the cross comes out strong because that block loads up your opposite side anyways. This is all more of an MMA consideration though where you can't just leave your hand on your temple to block a hook.
I wanna see you spar him boxing and then kick boxing to see how he deals with the kicks that would be a great video anyways great video as always mike!
