A productive day writing my book🌸✒️ | writing vlog ep.3

hey, welcome to a productive day in my life✨ I’m working on my book’s 2nd draft and making some BIG changes to it, which is exciting & scary at the same time🥲
Spend the day with me as I work on my book, do some writing at a cafe, and go for a spring walk🌸 I also talk a bit about dealing with change, uncertainty, and self-doubt as a writer, and share some tips that have helped me!
Thanks so much for watching, and let me know if you guys would like me to set up a writing group! I’ll see you next week ~

I’m feeling this! Always wondered how authors can take years, Donna Tartt a decade even, in writing their books and I’m starting to understand why🥲 but I’m so glad to know I’m not alone with this, ty for the support☺️🫶🏻

I know exactly how you feel about writing a whole manuscript and feeling stuck. I made the choice to fully rewrite the first draft of my first book and it was the best decision I made. Not only did it help me fix issues with plot, character, etc but it was a great way to improve my writing skills. It's a bummer because it does slow things down but what my book is then vs now is such a stark improvement. Writing is such a weirdly lonely skill, you spend so much time in your head and on the page working things out and doubting yourself and feeling alone yet we're all dealing with the same stuff. A writing group would be so much fun! I've been trying to follow more and more writers online because it's so hard to find writer friends in person.

I absolutely 100% relate to what you were saying about the editing process and how hard it feels to track any progress with it! Sometimes I get very upset about how nonlinear the whole writing process feels... But I guess that comes with the territory of any creative endeavor! As a fellow artist too, I'm sure you've also found that it's near impossible to see your drawing skills improve in a linear fashion as well. One week you're able to draw amazingly and you feel like you've reached the next level in skill, then the next week you feel like you've forgotten how to draw altogether. I think we as creatives have to come to terms with the fact that art in itself is a non-linear and even 'ethereal' concept with no real parameters around it because it can all be so subjective. Anyway before I ramble any longer I just wanted to let you know that I relate so much to that struggle and I'm 100% with you 😆 I would absolutely love to join a writing group if you ever put one together! I find your videos really encouraging 😁

Very intrigued by the book you talked about at the start, the courage to be disliked, I'm going to have to check it out ☺ I realize this video is a month old so you've probably already made a decision on this, but re: rewriting the whole book from scratch, I actually did that twice for my current book before I got to something I felt was good enough to start making revisions on the actual draft and honestly I absolutely recommend it, I learnt so much about my characters and my world from each rewrite and it helped me grow as a writer. I hope I won't need to do that many rewrites for future books, but if you are just starting out and learning to write I think i's a great exercise! Good luck! 😊🍀

This is really reassuring to hear, thank you!! And no it’s not too late, I still have the same problem😅 But I’m happy to hear you’ve found it helpful rewriting your draft multiple times before you started making proper revisions, everything I’ve been reading is very step by step so I’ve been feeling quite frustrated with myself for changing it so much.. thank you, as a newbie writer hearing this really helps, especially that you recommend doing this as a beginner! How are you doing now on your book? And may I ask how you set a schedule and writing goals for your book? Thank you😊💗

@@itszoewinter I'm really glad to hear you found it useful! 🥰 I'm current working on draft 5 of my book and recently decided to rewrite an entire subplot from scratch woops! 🙈 Hoping this will be the last Big Change though! I don't really set a schedule as such. I like giving myself permission to write slowly and make the book as good as I can without a deadline. I like thinking of goals, but I don't have a problem changing them if things end up taking me longer. I don't think this is a common approach though, and especially once you are published the pressure to write your next book faster is something that would be hard to avoid, but for now I think taking things slowly makes writing more enjoyable for me and helps me learn what works and doesn't work better

Im no writer. but for your daily goal you can maybe aim for an amount of pages to edit every day and make a tick box in your calendar. many people find it rewarding to tick something off and see the progress in the way of a daily streak. its also a motivation to have done something every day.

It's great that you finished your first draft! Unfortunately, I don't think I can share any editing tips. The only thing I can suggest is maybe looking at YT videos on how others in the Authortube community edit their books. Obviously, you don't have to follow their exact routine, but sometimes watching others helps us to develop our own routine (or even learn something new we can implement into our routine!). And I definitely agree with you that if you're able to reach at least one person with your written works, then you've accomplished your goal. Hope all goes well as you endure the editing process. Continue to take it slow and not overburden yourself. P.S.: Is personal development your desired niche or do you write in other genres as well? I know this is a random question...but I was just curious. Thanks!

Thank you, I really appreciate your kind words and support☺️ This is a great idea, I’ve been watching lots from other writers to learn from them! And I’m glad the thought of writing for just one person resonates with you too, I find it much more attainable in my mind when trying to stay motivated✒️ The project I’m working on now (and in this vlog) is a personal development book, but just for fun I’m also writing a fantasy/fiction story! My creative writing skills have a long way to come before I could take on a bigger project haha but I hope to get better at it! How is your book coming along? And I think I remember you mentioned starting another project?😊

@@itszoewinter You're welcome! Glad I could share some useful information. Definitely take your time in growing your creativity. It's like a muscle, the more you keep training it, the stronger it'll get! 🙂 Thanks for the inquiry about my writing projects! I still haven't revisited my book in a while (which I hope to change soon). Lately, I've been outlining ideas for another writing project, and it's good so far! I still have to fine-tune some details on the main characters and supporting characters...but I'm gradually getting there!

Hi Zoe - I’m also editing my 2023 NaNo project from last year. I’m also at about ~85K words! It sounds like you are weighing to push forward with some complex edits. Before you, perhaps ask yourself if your character has changed sufficiently from the beginning to the end. If they have, then maybe you can forgo doing the edits. But if they have not experienced that substantial change then perhaps you could bolster certain plot points to achieve the same goal that would be gained had you completed the lengthier complex edits. Just some thoughts 😃

I also started the challenge with a group of people but realize how few actually continue their project after the challenge is over, so it’s been a bit of a lonely journey and my first time trying to do all of this, so I really appreciate the help✨ However for this project I’m writing a non-fiction personal development book, do you perhaps have any experience or advice for this area? Thank you😊

@@itszoewinter ooooh I’ve never actually written a personal development project but I really love reading them. I think my favorite one is “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fu**.” I like it because during each chapter it weaves: a theme, a personal anecdote/vignette, and how you can apply it to your own life. It’s a simple, but very effective formula. Hey if you ever get a writing group going count me in! 😊 Tim

Hi, I’m sorry for such a late response! How did the writing vlog go? I’m a newbie too so I’m afraid I won’t have much advice, but some advice I’ve seen from others that I try to keep in mind is focusing on a mood you want to achieve for the vlog, such as cozy- then writing out all the little scenes and bits that would help create that, or productive, etc.. and also to ask yourself in the beginning what would you love to see in this kind of vlog? When watching other videos, always take notes of the things you love, little scenes, thumbnail designs, editing, and so on and then you can use these to find your own style☺️ I hope this helps 🤍
