@@thehunterjk2521 It was likely an editing error in which the wrong take was used for the episode. There have also been a few instances that the sound editor's forgot to implement the vocoder to get Soundwave's voice.

This is probably the closest the original series ever got to Nemesis Prime.

That was a _really_ good cloning job Megatron did; it even comes with its own disappearing/reappearing trailer!

This was one of the best episodes. It dealt solely with Optimus Prime and in the end prime was revealed by his compassion, one of his most defining traits. Prime in G1 was all about freedom and compassion.

Unfortunately, the love and compassion would eventually lead to his own death in the movie 86, Season 3 Dark Awakening and TF Headmasters. He is the Jesus of the whole show who would die for his men esp in the movie where he would rather die than sacrifice Hot Rod/Rodimus to get to Megatron. He took the rap for Hot Rod’s mistake at the cost of his own life just like Jesus died for all our sins.

When this aired (an early 1985 Season 2 episode scripted in late 1984), the movie wasn't finalized where they would feel comfortable bringing anything up that might be changed. Plus there was no knowledge at the time of what a "Matrix" was to the cartoon viewing audience. You can speculate today, but when breaking the 4th wall with production notes and behind the scenes, you can't retro fit what technically didn't exist (unless they do a G1 episode series remaster).

Considering how often Megatron missed with his fusion cannon, I'm surprised that the contest went the way it did.

I like how Ironhide takes charge when they not sure who the real Prime is. Even though, Prowl is supposed to be 2nd in command or Jazz, I can't remember, in the cartoon, it was Ironhide. And this episode is an example of this when he takes command. They really mucked up killing him in the movie. One of my favourite Autobots for sure.

It's interesting... that 2nd in command slot seemed to cycle around between Ironhide, Jazz, and Prowl during the 1st and 2nd seasons of the original show. Whereas in the animated movie and all the episodes set after that (in the far future of 2005!), Ultra Magnus was always the clear number 2.

@@blastvortex yes, as i also discovered that one of the cassette, Ratbat, is Cybertron ex-senator and one of the best Decepticon LEADER ever had, with amazing calculation and planner skills but very cruel and cold-blooded. Megathron told Soundwave to 'imprison' Ratbat as cassette because he is afraid of him.

Peter Cullen has gone on the record that his primary inspiration for his Optimus voice was his own brother Larry Cullen, but moments like this, 3:29, I can’t help but hear a little John Wayne in there.

The inspiration on Prime's personality comes from his brother but I do recall that he has stated in the past that there is a little bit of John Wayne thrown in.

Interesting you bring this up, because there's no studio to credit to that animation. Toei did most of season 2 and about half of 3, and AKOM clearly did 3 in season 2 and slightly more of season 3 than Toei, But Toei actually confirmed how many episodes they animated, and AKOM has a very distinct style, and that leaves a few episodes with no name attached. So who did that? Nobody who knows the answer has made it public. It's believed this episode is among the ones animated by this unknown studio.

Starscream's clone is destroyed but somehow still standing there 18:35

This was written before the Matrix was created for the movie, however Optimus was retconned into having the Matrix with him during his 4 million years of stasis lock on Earth and during the war on Earth until his regrettable demise in 2005. That being said, what they should have done was move the Optimus that didn't know how to work Teletraan 1 and didnt know Ironhide's name and scratch a number one on his shoulder and a 2 on the shoulder of the other optimus to tell them apart. After that, start asking questions that only the real one would know like how to operate Teletraan 1 and name all the Autobots correctly. After that they both open their chassis to show the Matrix but the clone would have had some device in it, perhaps even a matrix shell with a beacon in it to emit a signal to fool Teletraan 1 but the real Optimus would then show the real Matrix. Autobots then blast the clone to scrap. Also, having that clone machine in their base would mean that the Autobots could keep healthy scans of all of them on file and create clone bodies to harvest for spare parts or else complete spark/mind transfer into the clone body if their original body was damaged beyond repairs. Such scans could then recreate the bodies of all the Autobots struck down in the movie, and then their sparks could be recalled from Vector Sigma/All Spark like Optimus was when the Quintesson revived him.

Has anyone else realised that pound for pound Laserbeak is the most powerful transformer. And he's never even said a word... Powerful enough to take out prime long enough for this diversion to take place... And lets not forget he was silent enough to single handedly gather the information Magatron needed to start the great war in the movie... Laserbeak is my absolute favourite transformer! So underrated.

Megatron has a 3d printer in the 80s!! LOL!! Lazerbeak has really been putting the hurt on Prime in this series.

When I first watched this episode, I was sure that both Prime's would battle. I must admit, I like how the writers arranged that his Autobot took out him out.

I couldn’t tell which Optimus prime is the real one until the real Optimus prime said he would save spike over checking the crystals.

Ironic how cautious Megatron is with the Corlonium crystals in this episode considering how reckless he was with the asteroid in a similar story in War Of The Dinobots. Equally ironic that Megaton/Prime mistook Ironhide for Bumblebee considering that Megatron identified Bumblebee by name and scrambled his memory circuits in Transport to Oblivion.

They should have known it was the fake Prime when he didn't know the codes for teletran 1 or Ironhide's name. I don't know why he doesn't know their names since he's controlled by Megatron & Megatron knows all of them. Also I have never seen Prime trying to input codes before in any episode ever so he didn't need to do that.

@@chrisedwards3214 Yeah, they had to change things up a bit for that one... In season 2, 'Prime' didn't seem to mean anything. It was just the name given to him by Alpha Trion after being rebuild. No titled position, no impressing some high council, no lineage of Primes. Just him. He was only in charge because the people he was in charge of liked him. If you ask me, that version's better.

Since the copies are indistinguishable from the originals, down to the smallest component, that must mean Starscream’s copy is also a ghost somewhere!

The only TV episode where a single blast from laser blast totally destroys transformers.

Just gonna let that Bumblebee thing slip, are we? Naw, that's okay. Sure, he's the real Prime. After all, Ironhide looks so much like Bee, it's staggering.

BEST Childhood Cartoon EVER!

There’s one thing that’s bugging me. Did he also manage to copy to Matrix of Leadership when he built a duplicate of prime? Because there’s no way he would’ve been able to do that. That would’ve been the best way to distinguish the two.

Well, it's more of a hindsight notion considering the script to this episode was finalized in 1984 and well into production before anything (including the Matrix and any conceptual names of same) was concrete the movie. So I can totally see why this was never brought up because it might not have been a thing if the movie went into a completely different direction.

On loan to the Quintesson Institute of Metaphysics. They were figuring out how to retcon episodes like these.

I find a lot of similarities b/w Prime and Adam West's Batman.

The auto-scout had rubber tires. Should it not had insulated the auto-scout like it did Windcharger from getting blown up by the crystals?

Megatron deserves an Oscar for his performance. Also, did the false Prime have a copy of the Matrix inside him? If not, shouldn't Teletraan have detected it within the real one?

Its funny how Megatron knows the name of Gears in the previous episode, but can’t distinguish Bumblebee or Ironhide in this one

For a cassette tape, Laserbeak is no joke. he bested the #1 Autobot and the #2 Decepticon in the same episode.
